Pentecost Sunday SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus post-resurrection promise, recounted in today s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth! (Psalm 104:30). Joseph Church for assistance. Today, St. Francis Center services approximately 500 extremely low-income families, their children, and seniors.

The Center is located in the shadow of the downtown sports complexes near USC, specifically servicing the Garment District and South Park District of inner-city Los Angeles.

Francis Center has become a refuge for the marginalized and a voice for the weak, primarily Latino and African-American families with an average monthly income of about $550.

4 Ministry Spotlight St. Francis Center St. Francis Center is a multi-service community center, founded in 1972 by the Franciscans in response to the growing numbers of homeless individuals and poor families approaching St. Joseph Church for assistance. Today, St. Francis Center services approximately 500 extremely low-income families, their children, and seniors. At the same time, the Center continues its original mission to help the homeless. The Center is located in the shadow of the downtown sports complexes near USC, specifically servicing the Garment District and South Park District of inner-city Los Angeles. In an area marked by sweatshops, gang violence, and drugs, St. Francis Center has become a refuge for the marginalized and a voice for the weak, primarily Latino and African-American families with an average monthly income of about $550. Over 150 families here at St. Julie s have adopted a family from the St. Francis Center and provide a holiday basket of food and essentials at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. In addition, the parish helps to fund a portion of the Center s Summer Camp Program with gifts of new shoes and clothes. If you are interested in adopting a family starting this coming Thanksgiving, (you can team up with another family from our parish, or get a group together) you can sign up at Stewardship Sunday or contact Jane Coccia at or stjuliesadoptafamily@gmail.com. Men s Bible Study This ministry focuses on studying the bible and learning how to apply it in our daily lives. Fellowship through discussions, readings, and sharing are encouraged. No experience with theological principles required. Topics of discussion follow the Sunday readings and gospel. This helps give deeper meaning to the Mass and homily. A handout is provided but bringing a bible is recommended. Men s Bible Study meets on Tuesday evening from 6:45 pm until 8:00 pm in the Parish Center. All pilgrims will be blessed, hike to Camino stations for reflections and passport stamps. This is a half day walk adapted to our local countryside, neighborhood and faith traditions.
