Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don t notice their suffering. God s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. What is one thing you and your family could do this week to help those who are poor or sick? 6 Page Six Adult Confirmation The Adult Confirmation Preparation classes are for parishioners who are out of high school and who have been baptized and received First Communion, but who have yet to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation strengthens the graces we receive in Baptism and fills us with an even greater share of the Holy Spirit. This Sacrament completes our initiation into the Catholic Church. This year the classes for Adult Confirmation will be held at St. Jude the Apostle parish in Westlake beginning this October 2nd. All sessions are Sunday afternoons from 1:30-3:00 p.m in the parish hall. Bystander engagement is critical to combat child abuse There are far too many cases in which a child is too scared to report abuse, and the adults around him or her do not understand the signs of abuse or too afraid to speak up. Bystanders have more power than they know, especially when it comes to reporting abuse and protecting children. Young adults don t always have the opportunity or the courage to speak up for themselves, and the adults around them have a duty to help out when they can.
