This year saw so many awesome efforts in the pool including record breaking swims (listed on page 3). Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18 (NASV) Throughout my life I have wondered about growth. This may be because my family are not very good at it (we are short!), but it is probably because I am fascinated by the transformation that occurs as I watch both nature and people grow. In my roles as a mother and an educator I have the privilege to watch young people grow. I see them change in so many ways and it is such a blessing to be a small part of it. Sometimes I step back and I wonder about what I am doing to grow. This is an important question for me to ask, as I expect the graduates of our College to be lifelong learners and therefore need to have the same expectation of myself. It is an important question to ask as a follower of Christ because I want to draw closer to Him and glean from His wisdom. This growth comes with pain as I am stretched in new directions. There are times when the pressure is intense and it seems as if there is no end to the trials (many students are at this point with assessments and increased workloads). These times are balanced, however, with the brilliance of discovering something new, of experiencing deeper understanding, and an awareness of transformation within me. We need to remind our students to look for those moments of joy and transformation. As Christians it is a fantastic truth that God is working in us: And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6 When there are trials and difficulties we need to continue to trust God and be patient: So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised. Hebrews 10:35-36 It is also important to remember that God has everything under control. As Christine Caine says, Be patient in the mundane activities of life. God is still working. Whatever you do in secret, God will reveal in public. God is in the ordinariness of life and uses it for His glory. I like to imagine my life as a glorious canvas that will be full of rich colour, various greys and deep darks. That as I commit to growing I am imbuing it with texture and depth so that when my canvas is viewed it will display the glory of The Artist. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:15-16 How do we grow? In the messy complexity of life. In the day to day experiences. 4 2017 Bayliss Lecture Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? No, it s your Brain! Dr Mark Hackett from Curtain University in Western Australia presented the 2017 Bayliss Youth Lecture to students at NT Christian College on Tuesday May 16. Mark explained how he uses light to investigate brain biochemistry during natural development and ageing, as well as biochemical events that lead to brain damage and degenerative disease. The data obtained is used by an international (Australia, USA, Canada) and interdisciplinary team of scientists (chemists, physicists, pharmacists, nutritionists, and neurosurgeons), to develop new therapies to minimise or repair brain damage. The Bayliss Youth Lecture (organised by the WA branch of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute) aims to foster a close and continuing interaction among students, teachers and practising chemists - both industrial and academic - with the objective of developing interest in and an understanding of the full ramifications of chemical science. Some Year 10 students were asked to give some feedback to Mark after the lecture. Jack Riley s response: The lecture was informative about the new techniques used to map the brain and the certain proteins and elements within it. It made me wonder, how could the Synchrotron be used to map something like cancer? This field really interests me, and it would be cool to keep up with the further use of this technology. Thank you for the interesting and engaging talk on this topic. Jewel Rockey, Jemima Fernandes and Sophia McKee wrote: Thank you for the great talk and giving us the insights of the realistic life of a scientist and for showing us the failures and the achievements that you experienced, as well as the opportunities you get. We never really knew that the hippocampus was the reason we remembered stuff, so thanks for letting us know! 5 Staff Introductions My name is Elizabeth O Connor but some people here may remember me as Missy Hansen, as I did all my schooling at MCC. After being a stay at home mum, my husband and I decided working in school hours would suit our life style perfectly. So after finishing my Certificate III, I was offered a job as Teacher Aide in the EALD7 class. I love my job because I can contribute to what happens in the class and feel appreciated. My name is Caleb Sandford and I have recently joined the team at Marrara Christian College teaching Year 8 HaSS and Music as well as Elective Music for both Year 7 and 8. My wife and I have moved to Darwin from Newcastle, NSW. I believe we have arrived at the perfect time as the weather is lovely, much warmer than Newcastle at this time of year. We love the atmosphere Darwin has to offer and have found it a very easy place to settle into. The community here at Marrara Christian College have been very supportive and the staff are a pleasure to work with. I have had a great first term getting to know all of my students and look forward to getting to know their families. Hi, my name is Antoinette Erasmus and I am from sunny South Africa. I am married and have two adult children. One is working in Beijing, China and the other living in South Africa. I am privileged to be on the rollercoaster ride of teaching Year 1/2 at Marrara Christian College. My husband and I have been living in Darwin for just over a year. I have been teaching the best part of 30 years. Four years ago my husband and I decided that we would like to travel and work in different parts of the world. We started our journey in Singapore, we then went to Muscat in Oman and now we are in Darwin. I have found that all children across the world are the same and have the same needs, fears and desires. Like most human beings, they need love and acceptance. My prayer is that I will be able to provide this to them. Marrara Christian College seeks to be a learning community where parents and staff partner together, and where students are nurtured through a loving, biblically based school curriculum to build their faith, character and desire to serve.

7 She Flies is bringing two three-day Drone Camps to Darwin from July. She Flies Drone camps aim to increase female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers. Girls from Years 6-12, and adult mentors, can apply to attend the camps by visiting She Flies Drone Camp. Applications are open, but close 28 May. 8 DonateLife Northern Territory Young Writers Micro fiction Competition Writing for Life What if your words had the power to save lives? Donation of organs and tissues helps to save and improve the lives of hundreds of Australians every year. Unfortunately many Australians are still waiting to receive the opportunity of a transplant. After the death of a family member, at a time of immense grief, many families make the decision to donate their loved one s organs to save the lives of others. Patients can wait months or even years to receive a transplant and some patients pass away from their illnesses while on the organ transplant waiting list. The Writing for Life competition asks students aged 13 to 18 years of age to think critically and to write creatively. What if their words had the power to save lives? Imagine if you were waiting for a transplant or were asked to donate a loved one s organs.
