1 Newsletter 2017 August 18 - Week 4, Term 3 Year 5/6 Camp What did the students have to say about their camp? "My favourite thing was the Yellow Water Cruise because I saw lots of crocodiles. I never really get to see crocodiles. I also liked the cruise because I saw lots of birds and I love birds. The crocodiles I saw were really big and fat. When I was on the boat, everyone was on one side and I thought the boat might tip, so my friends and I went on the other side but we were all safe. The man driving the boat and the other people organising the cruise were really nice." - Tsharni "I enjoyed the food - my favourite was the hamburgers. I liked doing Survivor and making a fire that could touch the top of the tree." - Harry "My favourite part of the 5/6 Camp this year was climbing Ubirr Rock and doing an oil pastel painting. The sunset in Kakadu was AWESOME!" - Anne "What I liked about camp was going to see the rock painting because it tells the story of the Indigenous culture." - Georgia "My favourite thing on camp was Survivor because of the fantastic food and the shed we made. I also like Ubirr Rock because of the beautiful sunset." - John "My favourite thing was the Night Games because it is fun playing games in the dark." - Toby More photos on page 3...

The close and deep relationship between these 3 things has challenged me to think about how I often do not recognise the impact of my thoughts and words. Thoughts lead to words and actions. Whatever I am thinking about is often the focus of conversations that I have. I have had tooth pain for the last few weeks and it has consumed my thoughts. I found that my words were harsh and I was more likely to feel sorry for myself rather than see the good things that were happening around me. What are the sorts of thoughts that I need to focus on so that my words and actions can contribute to the building of a culture that promotes learning and hope? As always, the Bible has the answer. Philippians 4:8 says: What does this actually look like? Thoughts on Thinking "And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." Truth: God is the only test for truth. He is unchanging. We know truth by steeping ourselves in His word. Honourable: Think on that which inspires reverence or awe; is dignified and worthy of respect. If our mind is full of these things then we will be less likely to be distracted by meanness and frivolity. Right: Think on the Holy nature of God as revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, and model our behaviour after Him. Pure: Righteousness in essence. Do we think and focus on the beauty and wonder of our world and our God, or do our thoughts lead to ugliness and pain? Lovely: Think of what is pleasing, agreeable and attractive. Think on things that deserve love. Admirable: Our thinking needs to focus on the best in all people. This is not always easy but it is definitely worthwhile. We need to be deliberate in our thinking. It takes effort and perseverance to not be swayed by culture and the many viewpoints around us. As Christians we are called to be culture shapers not followers. We need to win the battle over sin on the thought level so that we can grow in godliness. We can control our thoughts we can make sure that we are focusing on the things that really matter. All of these things are embodied in the person of Christ. When we link ourselves to Him by faith and love, when we let Him into our hearts and minds, we can focus on these more easily. It is much easier to cling to a person than ethereal ideas. If Christ is in my thoughts then all good things are there. He will help you to capture your thoughts on things that give life. Mrs Rebecca Dimmick - Head of Senior School

4 Where Are They Now? My name is Chantelle Weippert (pictured far left), a past student from NT Christian College. I graduated in 2016, and I would love to share my story. I graduated from Marrara Christian College / Northern Territory Christian College with an ATAR of I was accepted into numerous universities but chose to attend Griffith University, Brisbane. I am currently in my second semester of a double degree: Bachelor of Psychological Science and Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Paired with the stressors of now living away from my family, university has so far been a bit of a roller coaster. I have found a lot of independence and discipline is required for university (heed their warning!), as you no longer have anyone demanding your assignments or holding your hand. Despite this I am on track and have found my course so far both fascinating and engaging. I hope to successfully finish my degree then undertake my masters degree, and hopefully, further in the future, even my PhD, primarily following the area of Psychological Science. Shylock on Trial Year 10 English Studies class is studying Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare this term and as part of their learning they had a debate on the topic that Shylock is a villain (and not a victim). The affirmative team members - Tom Palmer, Lucas Badenhop and Andrew Van Gelderen - stood their ground firmly, arguing that Shylock is a merciless villain and came up with some strong points in rebuttal to the opposing team members - Jewel Rockey, Jemima Fernandes and Joshua Van Bentum. They had strong competition from the negative team who put forward their contention that Shylock is a victim of prejudice, discrimination and ill-treatment. The debate was led by the chair person, Dominique Carbone, and time keeper, Amber Plumb. The panel of adjudicators - Sophia McKee, Noah Hayes and Jack Riley, gave some constructive feedback at the end of the debate. On the whole, it was an engaging and entertaining experience for all of us. Special thanks to Junior Marcal, Cooper Winsor and Emma Foscaro in helping with the photos and videoing the event. Well done, class! Mrs Terese Kadirgamar - Teacher

5 Evolution Dance Competition Marrara Christian College would like to acknowledge Grace Opie's recent achievements in Dance (Year 6). The Evolution Dance Competition was in Darwin and held at Charles Darwin University over the 5th and 6th of August. There were hundreds of competitors and Grace performed 4 solos in the age group, winning 3 first places in Tap, Contemporary and Jazz and a third place in Hip Hop. Well done Grace, what an amazing achievement! New Securely Fenced Bike Rack! The new bike rack near the canteen is now finished and students are encouraged to use this new fenced area. Thank you to all those who worked on this project - it's wonderful that bikes can now be safely stored! The gate will remain closed but unlocked throughout the day. Please be aware that any bikes left after 4pm will be locked in overnight for security.
