I was so impressed at the very respectful way that the children participated in remembering the sacrifices of our service men and women. My thanks to Mr Marinucci and our school leaders for organising such a moving service. This week we were delighted to welcome two external reviewers who conducted a review as part of our School Improvement Plan. The reviewers provided some very positive feedback about our school after meeting with staff, students and parents over three days. Improvement recommendations will be used to develop our strategic plan over the next few years. I would like to remind all parents that our yard supervision does not commence until 8.35am of a morning. We do have some significant concerns when children are being dropped off as early as 8 a.m. as they are not supervised during this time. If you need to drop children off before 8.35 a.m. please contact the Out of School Hours Program where places are available and children are able to be supervised. Commencing next Monday all students should be in their FULL WINTER UNIFORM. It is most important that children are not wearing a mixture of summer and winter uniform and they are correctly attired in our full winter uniform. Thank you for your ongoing assistance in ensuring your children are meeting the dress code of our school. I will be Finally a reminder that next Friday 8 th May we will be holding our annual Mother s Day breakfast here at school and would love to see as many Mum s, Grandmother s and special ladies in children s lives come along and join in this celebration. Breakfast commences at 8 a.m. and parents are invited to listen to our guest speaker who will commence at 9 a.m. Please RSVP to the school office. Have a great weekend. Tim Kelly Principal visiting all classes next week to check that all students are correctly attired.
P A G E 2 Religion MAY THE MONTH OF MARY This painting of the Holy Mother Mary and the Infant Jesus by Christopher Santer is a constant reminder of the joy of motherhood and the close bond that Our Lady had with Jesus. Mary was a witness to Jesus miracles, was there at the crucifixion, and when he appeared to the disciples, and Pentecost. The month of May is dedicated to Mary. We remember and celebrate many special events that record a journey of faith for Mary. On Mary's arrival, Elizabeth waas conscious of the approach of her who was to be the mother of Jesus. At the same time she was filled with the Holy Spirit, and under his influence declared that Mary and her expected child were most BLESSED and happy. Mary, animated by Elizabeth's address, and being also under the influence of the Holy Spirit, broke out into joy, admiration, and gratitude. Mary s song of praise, The Magnificat is Mary s response to what God bestowed upon her. Our Saviour. She proclaims the Lord s greatness with grace and humility. Celebrating Mary as our Holy Mother. Sunday 13 th May is also a special occasion to celebrate Mother s Day by showing our appreciation for the achievements and efforts of mothers. It is a celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. We honour Mary, the divine motherhood to Jesus Christ We know that Mary s son became the Saviour of the world. Mary the Mother of God, her cousin Elizabeth knew what a special privilege Mary had been given. When Mary went to visit Elizabeth, Elizabeth called her the mother of my Lord (Luke 1:43). Mary is our greatest saint, so it is not surprising that we begin every year with a celebration in her honour. We also show our love and reverence for Mary on many other special days each year. Throughout the month of May we celebrate many special days about Mary. We call these special days Marian Feasts. We can pray to Mary, the Mother of God, every day. We can ask Mary to pray that we will follow Jesus in everything we say and do. Hail Mary, full of grace. Mary was chosen by God, moved by faith and duty-bound by love. Holy Mother pray for us! OUR MOTHER IS TRULY A GIFT OF GOD Ascension Sunday 13 th May Mark 16:19 "So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken unto them, was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. Sunday13th May, is the Ascension of Jesus Christ, the second of the three great feasts that focus the 50 days of Easter. Easter is the central mystery of our faith. The three great feasts are the Resurrection, the Ascension and Pentecost. They celebrate what God did to Jesus after his death. Easter Sunday celebrates the continued existence of Jesus. Ascension Sunday celebrates the mysterious newness of the resurrected body of Jesus. In Mark we read Jesus is at the right hand of God. He is close to God and shares in God s love. The Ascension of Jesus is professed in the Nicene Creed and in the Apostles' Creed. S T C A R L O B O R R O M E O N E W S L E T T E R
The Ascension implies Jesus' humanity being taken into Heaven. The Feast of the Ascension, celebrated on the 40th day of Easter, is one of the main feasts of the Christian year. The Ascension is one of the five major milestones in the gospel narrative of the life of Jesus, the others being baptism, transfiguration, crucifixion, and resurrection. John 20:17 after his resurrection he tells Mary Magdalene: "I have not yet ascended to the Father; go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God". 5 Literacy VICTORIAN PREMIER S READING CHALLENGE Dear Parents, We have 25 students that have completed the Challenge to date. Well Done! There have been 1,894 books read so far. Thank you to everyone that has tried logging in and entered at least one book on-line. However, there are many children who have not entered any books on-line as yet, please enter at least one book so that we can check if the username and passwords are working correctly. Don t forget to borrow Premier s Reading Challenge books from our very own school library. SMART SPELLING AP- PROACH A couple of years ago, the staff at St Carlo s completed a Professional Learning workshop on how to implement The SMART Spelling Approach ( Desig n e d b y Mi c he l l e Hutchinson). This approach has been designed to support teachers in how to explicitly and systematically teach spelling using a common procedure across from Prep to Yr.6. Michelle Hutchinson has developed this from her work in leading schools in Victoria over recent years. The SMART Spelling approach fits in nicely with our Word Work component of our CAFE/Daily 5 structure that we have currently in place for Reading and Writing. SMART Spelling is based on whole words and how words work with an emphasis on meaning. Spelling rules and patterns are taught in the context of words, in a way that builds on learning from prior years. That is why we have adopted a whole school approach. How does the SMART Spelling approach work? Follow the steps below as a guide: S- Say. The teacher says the word and students repeat it aloud M-Meaning. The teacher defines the word and puts it into a sentence. Students repeat this step. Information such as prefixes, suffixes, spelling rules, synonyms, and antonyms is presented during this step. A- Analyse. The teacher analyses and breaks up the word into individual sounds, syllables and clusters/patterns. For example, for the word snow we say: s/ n/ ow/ R-Remember. The students are asked to select the parts of the word they already know and then identify the parts they find tricky or need to learn. T-Teach. Spell the word, saying letter names, using clustering. For example night is: n/ igh/ t/ The students are given spelling word lists according to their level of understanding and needs. These need to be practised over the week and will be assessed on their particular words by the end of the week. Please talk with your children about what they are learning in spelling, perhaps some of the rules too. Many thanks for your support, Nella Fimiani Literacy Leader/ Deputy Principal

Student Wellbeing True Grit helps kids succeed By Michael Grose Talent or persistence. Which would you choose for your child? I often ask this question at my parenting seminars and the responses are fascinating. Parents naturally want both. Sorry, but that s not an option. When pushed most parents choose talent over persistence, which in many ways reflects the current thinking around achievement. Intelligence, sporting prowess and ability in whatever it is we value will only get a child or young person so far. Talent is purely potential. They need more than this to achieve sustained excellence in anything they do. It is the character traits of hard work combined with their ability to stick at a task and see it through that makes all the difference. Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers, described twentysomething American student Renee, who took 22 minutes to work out a complicated math question. The average student gives up after THREE minutes, preferring to ask for help than work through a problem. Renee is unusual as she persisted for 22 minutes until she got the solution. The funny thing is that she doesn t describe herself as a good math student. But she is highly successful at Math. Grit rather than pure math talent is her forte Character matters Cognitive skills by themselves aren t enough for children to succeed over the long journey. Many recent studies (most notably the work of US-based Angela Duckworth) have found that character not cognitive ability is the single most reliable determinant of how a person s life will turn out. These traits include the inclination to persist at a boring task (grit); the ability to delay gratification (self-control) and the tendency to follow through with a plan (conscientiousness), which are invaluable traits at school, in the workplace and in life in general. Character works as an indicator of success when it s seen as a set of strengths and personality traits rather than personal values such as loyalty, tolerance or forgiveness. Character is forged under difficulty The key character traits of grit, self-control and conscientiousness are forged under hardship and duress. This makes our current propensity to over protect and over indulge kids problematic something I wrote about in my book Spoonfed Generation. When kids continually experience easy success we set them up for failure because when they finally face up to difficult situations many lack the capacity to push through the tough times. Encouraging kids to step out of their comfort zones and take learning and social risks is one of the great challenges for modern parents. It s critical that we challenge children and young people to attempt activities where failure is a significant option. Overcoming setbacks and pushing through difficulties are how character is formed. Character is malleable The good news is that character, like intelligence, is malleable. It s not fixed. It s important to establish in your own mind as a parent and also in children s minds that character traits such as grit, self-control and conscientiousness can be developed. To this end it s important then that parents steer clear of using absolute language to label behaviour and views
traits and abilities as fixed. Comments such as You re no good at math become a rule that young people learn to live by, and become default thinking that s hard to budge. Make grit part of a family s brand In my book Thriving! I wrote how every family has it s own distinctive brand, which is a reflection of the strengths and traits that all members share. For instance, if high work ethic is a common trait then it s a fair bet that hard work is something parents focus on in their family. Parents can actively promote grit and persistence in kids by making character part of their family s brand. They can focus on character in conversations. They can share experiences where character paid off for them in their lives. They can discuss how character contributes to excellence and success in every day live including at work, at school and in the sporting field. Character and its many components can become part of the family narrative regardless on the age of children. Build proprietary language around character Families develop their own language around what s important to them and that needs to include character if the parents want to foster excellence. Continuous messaging of terms and phrases such as hang tough and hard yakka help weave character traits into the family DNA. enthusiasm, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, and curiosity Character becomes the default mechanism Habit and character go hand in hand. Conscientious young people don t go around consciously deciding that they ve got to delay the fun stuff until they ve done their work. They ve just made it their default mechanism to stick at their task, or delay gratification, or jump into a task with enthusiasm. Conscientiousness doesn t always serve a young person well. They can sometimes place full focus on menial or unimportant tasks when a smarter option may be to cruise and save energy for the important times such as exams. That s where parental guidance plays a part. However in the long run conscientiousness serves a young person well when it s their default because when the stakes are high they will automatically make the right choice. In fact, it will be the only option when excellence really matters. Parents should reflect on the language and terms they already use and build key phrases and terms around the following key character strengths: grit, self-control, conscientiousness,
GARDENING ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN: GROWING POTATOES IN CONTAINER. Gardening is one of the most rewarding outdoor activities for kids. Not only does it get them outside in the fresh air, learning about the natural world around them, but it also teaches them about responsibility and routines. So what kinds of gardening ideas will have your kids outside weeding, watering, and treating their plants with care? Potatoes are incredibly easy to grow and although they re usually found in wide outdoor vegetable patches, they can easily be grown in containers at home. You ll still need quite a large container to grow potatoes, but there are lots of fun ways you can recycle common objects for this. You could use, for example, an old baby bath, a plastic or hessian shopping bag, a bucket, an old sink, or even an old bin. Whatever you decide to use make sure it s fairly deep and there are drainage holes in the bottom, so that excess water doesn t collect and rot the plants your kids have carefully planted and cared for. Fill your chosen container with about ¼ of soil. LET S PLANT 1.Choose your seed potatoes with the most eyes and place them face up in the soil. Cover lightly with more soil and place somewhere sunny. Give them a light watering. 2. Within a few days the potatoes will begin to sprout and delicate leaves and stems will begin to be seen. 3. As the potato stems get taller add more soil to your container being careful not to break the stems. Continue to add soil, mounding it around and in between the stems, until the potatoes begin to flower. 4. When the foliage begins to turn brown and dries it is time to harvest your potatoes. and start cooking them. Roasted, chipped, mashed or gnocchi they will taste amazing and you will have them grown them on your own. Happy Gardening to everyone Mrs Barca and the Environmental Club
