2 A PRESENTS COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 4 WEEK 3 ALL SCHOOL NEWS In Week 4 of this term the school will be participating in events based on the Barnabas Fund s Suffering Church Action Week. All Biblical Studies classes in Years 7-10 will be focusing on the issue of the suffering church and persecution. It is hoped that greater awareness of the plight of Christians throughout the world will be raised, and that students will be moved to support in prayer their Christian brothers and sisters worldwide. Different year groups will focus specifically on the situation of persecuted Christians in different regions of the world. Although SCAW has a greater focus on awareness than fundraising, plans are being developed to use the week as an opportunity to raise financial support for the project. Families of students are encouraged to pray for this and to have follow-up conversations with their children about this important issue. Further resources can be found online at barnabasfund.org/scaw. SUFFERING CHURCH ACTION WEEK I AM NOT ASHAMED! Suffering Church Action Week is an annual event which promotes Prayer and Action for the persecuted church and positive learning from the persecuted churches around the world. This year, SCAW is being commemorated from Sunday 29 October Sunday 5 November. The Barnabas Fund is encouraging schools, youth groups and Sunday schools to celebrate a unified action to show our solidarity with the persecuted peers, based around the theme I Am Not Ashamed. The aim of SCAW I Not Ashamed campaign: UNIFORM SHOP Open: Fridays (term time) 8am-12pm & 12:30-4pm Our persecuted brothers and sisters need our prayers and support, and Suffering Church Action Week is the perfect time to raise awareness and reach out to them To help Christian youth understand the many challenges faced by the Christian young people in the persecuted world Parents please note that all students should now be in full summer school uniform. The Uniform Shop gratefully accepts donations of 2 nd hand uniforms as they are of great assistance to families in our community. Donations can be left at the office or brought in to the Uniform Shop on Fridays. What: I Am Not Ashamed is to remember and identify ourselves with young people who have faced persecution because of who they are and what they believe. These young people have had courage to not deny their beliefs in the face of persecution. They have had the courage to keep going in the face of devastating loss, difficulty and despair. In our own contexts, it takes courage to speak out against persecution. In SCAW, we acknowledge and celebrate the dedication and bravery of young persecuted Christians and commit to support them at their time of needs and challenges. Layby is available if you would like items set aside to pay them off slowly. Items can also be put on hold. Online ordering! Information and order forms can be found on our website under the Today tab. Orders are packed on Friday and sent home with students. Name labels: Personalised, iron-on name labels are available for $0.50 each. The labels are to be ironed on at home and will come with instructions. Each Secondary blazer sold will have a free label included.

4 COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 4 WEEK 3 COMPASSION MUFTI DAY - Thurs 2 Nov Next Thursday, 2 November, the primary students will be having a mufti day! Students bring a gold coin donation for the privilege of not wearing uniform. This will go towards supporting our 4 Compassion Children: Yves in Haiti, Alexis in Peru, Alex in Kenya and Juthamat in Thailand. Students must still practise sun-safety and wear a hat and wear shoes that protect their feet. and body still. We look at the person speaking. We listen to what they are saying. We keep silent and we keep ourselves still. In this way, we show others that what they are saying is important (good manners) and make it easier for ourselves to learn well (being a learner). This is not always easy, but the more we practise these good manners, they become habitual. Got it? PRIMARY CELEBRATION EVENING 24 NOV Students have begun practising for this year s musical, the Magical Christmas Jigsaw, which they will be presenting on Friday, 24 November. We encourage all our Primary families to attend this end of year Celebration of Community. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD - Boxes Next Friday at assembly, we will pray for the children who will receive the Operation Christmas Child boxes you so generously donated. Thank you again for your willingness to show God s love in this very practical way. KINDERGARTEN OPEN MORNING, ORIENTATION AND STAY & PLAY AFTERNOONS We will commence our transition to big school with our Kindergarten Open Morning on Friday 27 October. On Wednesday, 1 November we will have our Kindergarten Orientation. This will be followed by two Stay & Play afternoons on 8 and 15 November. Participation in these programs will help your child to feel more comfortable in the big school environment and reduce some of the anxiety around starting school. If your child is starting Kindergarten in 2018, we encourage you to participate in these activities. PRIMARY PRESENTATION ASSEMBLY Friday Morning, 24 November In the morning of our Celebration Evening, we will hold our Presentation Assembly. As we have grown, it has become necessary to hold two separate Presentation Assemblies. We will hold our Kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 Presentation at 9:00 and the Years 3-6 Presentation will follow at 10:00. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. PRIMARY ASSEMBLY Each Friday (9:00-9:30am) we hold our Primary Assembly in the school hall. This is a time when our Primary classes come together to celebrate God s goodness. Parents and friends are very welcome to attend, particularly when your child s class is rostered to share in Assembly. Stage assembly dates are listed below for your convenience: Class Date Kindergarten Assembly 27 October S3 Assembly 3 November S1 Assembly 10 November Assembly 17 November Presentation Assembly 24 November K-12 Chapel 1 December PBL VALUE FOR THE WEEK: Be a Learner and Use Your Listening Manners Over the next two weeks, we will focus on being a learner by using our listening manners. When we listen well, we are in a better place to take in all the information we need. We learn these in kindergarten and we need them throughout our life. Our listening manners are: Eyes watching, ears listening, mouth silent PARENTS BREAKFAST/DEVOTION PB&D! Remember this is held every Tuesday in H4: Breakfast is provided from 8.30am, with a brief (15 min) devotion at 9am. Parents are welcome to stay for some or all of it. Our next Parents Breakfast and Devotion (PB&D) will be Tuesday, 31 October. All parents are welcome!

5 COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 4 WEEK 3 BUILDING A STRONG FAMILY by Focus on the Family Healthy families don t just happen. You have to actively work at creating a bond that will last. The best way to build a strong family is through a proactive approach. That means looking for ways to bring your family together. Dinnertime is the best place to start. Instead of eating in front of the TV every night, make a rule that everybody has to come together at the table for dinner. And then use the time to talk about the day. At least one night a week, why not have a family game night? Pull out the board games and make an evening of it. The only rule is everybody has to play. CRUNCH N SIP Good nutrition and healthy eating habits are an important part of learning. Each morning our students enjoy Crunch n Sip, when they will have a drink of water and eat a serving of fresh fruit or vegetables. We ask parents to support this, by providing your child with a serving of fresh fruit or vegetables for their Crunch n Sip break. Students should also bring a drink bottle filled with water. Rather than sweets or packets of chips, why not pack a second Crunch n Sip for your child to enjoy at recess time? Each week, the Cancer Council of NSW provides us with nutrition snippets to encourage healthy habits. Family projects are another great idea. Get the whole family involved in a plan to help someone less fortunate. Even your young kids can help out. It s a great way to bring your family together with a common goal. For more healthy advice, go to PRIMARY CHOIR WEEKLY PRACTICE Students enrolled in the Choir: Practice is every Wednesday morning :50am (lunchtime) in Room H4! Please be on time! If Choir parents have any questions, contact Michelle Lin (Family Chaplain) via mlin@rpcs.nsw.edu.au. HEALTHY EATING HABITS As more children arrive early for school, we are noticing poor eating habits. Students are raiding their lunch boxes for chips, lollies and chocolates. If we see them, we ask that they leave them for after school, explaining that these foods do not offer the necessary energy or nutrients to support good learning. Could we encourage you to leave these treats for when children return home or even for weekends? Instead, pack a healthy alternative, like those promoted in the Nutrition Snippets, that students can snack on before school (popcorn, sandwich, fruit, etc). These kind of snacks will provide the kind of energy that supports our students learning.

6 RPCS COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 4 WEEK 3 SECONDARY NEWS YOUNG JUSTICE PROGRAM Years 7-8 SAMARITANS PURSE SHOEBOX TIME On the 17 th of October, Mrs Koulyras and eight RPCS students ranging from years 7 8, were invited to attend the annual Young Justice Program in The Supreme Court of NSW, in hopes of encouraging younger generations on matters regarding social justice issues. The event commenced at 8:30am with an opening address by the acclaimed President of the NSW Young Lawyers, Emily Ryan, followed by the Honourable Justice Margaret Beazely AO. Schools were later divided into groups and the students were taken to their first workshop of the day, which covered Legal Education. Later students had morning tea, which was soon followed by another lesson and group discussion. Here students learned about sentencing a criminal and the proper punishment that should be given. However, more notably, groups were given the opportunity to present their case to Terry Buddin SC regarding what punishment they would give a particular criminal. Our group not only determined the appropriate sentencing for the criminal, but was also awarded as the best group that presented the case. Finally, students had their last workshop of the day, which though it seemed like an eternity, left everyone on a high note. Have you started to plan for Christmas yet? What would it be like if this year there was nothing under your Christmas tree? Imagine if, in your entire life, you had never received a single gift? This is the experience of millions of children from around the world. You could be the person to change a life by getting involved in the Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child. You can pack a shoe box, donate items for a shoe box or donate $9 to ship a box. Whatever you choose to do remember you are bringing joy into a child s life through a simple gift which speaks of God s unconditional love for them. Pick up a box or find out more ways to be involved by speaking to Mrs Frisken. Edition # In summary, the event was a great learning opportunity for all who were present as well a way to gain inspiration for aspiring young lawyers. Isabella Luchko 2017 HSC EXAMS So whatever you do, do it all for the honour & glory of the Lord, 1 Cor 10:31 Year 12 Students are reminded to arrive early for each exam ready to enter the Hive or D1. The school will be praying for you throughout your exams.
