2 MDUMC SPIRITUAL FORMATION ARE YOU LOOKING FOR WAYS YOU MIGHT LEARN MORE DEEPLY, SHARE YOUR FAITH WITH OTHERS, AND GIVE IN WAYS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE CONSIDERED? As you look through this edition of the Spiritual Formation Fall 2018 brochure, consider ways these studies and classes will make a difference in your own life as well as in the life of your church and community! As we examine our call to serve God and our neighbors, there are many opportunities in our midst to deepen and strengthen our lives with the hope that we will all become better disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. WORSHIP AND THE WORD Wednesdays Beginning September 5 5:30-7:30 PM Wesley Hall This fall, MDUMC will offer a new worship opportunity on Wednesday nights called Worship and the Word as a part of our regular programming. Dinner will be served in the Gym from 5:30 6:30 ($8 for adults and $5 for children 4 and under - no more than $25 per family). After dinner, all will be encouraged to join together in Wesley Hall for a time of song and prayer led by Drew Essen and clergy staff, followed by Dr. Robbins new study on the book of Revelation. If you ll be taking part in a different Bible study or group on Wednesday nights, you re still invited to join in the worship time before your group begins! Our pastors and staff are excited about this new midweek worship time and hope that all will make plans to be a part of it. WEDNESDAYS AT MDUMC DR. ROBBINS MORNING BIBLE STUDY Wednesdays Beginning September AM Wesley Hall Dr. Robbins will teach a verse by verse study of the Book of Revelation. He incorporates humor and stories along with sound biblical interpretation. All anyone needs to bring is a Bible. We hope you ll join us for this weekly Bible study. SEPTEMBER CHRISTIAN BELIEVER: KNOWING GOD WITH HEART AND MIND Thursdays Beginning September 6 (30 weeks) 9:30 11:30 AM D204 Leader: Vicky Harris $38 This program focuses on classical teachings of the Christian faith presenting, explaining, and interpreting them in a way that we can understand, through the use of words, symbols, readings, and hymns. We will examine the writings of ancient and modern Christian commentators and view video presentations by leading Bible scholars. BODY, MIND, & SPIRIT Thursdays Beginning September 6 Ongoing 11:45 AM D100 Contact: SheriKelley@mdumc.org Boomers and Seniors are invited any Thursday for lunch, devotional and special activities and classes. Lunch is $5 ($7 with salad) in our kitchen serving line. After lunch, we have a time of devotion. In the afternoon, options include movies with discussion, table games, or educational classes, etc. Watch the Messenger and the weekly blast for more information.

Victor Resendiz $8 Transformation comes from questions, not answers. Trevor Hudson sees the Bible as a book of questions from God to us. God wants to enter into a conversational relationship with each one of us. God asks questions, and our answers draw us into a relationship for deeper sharing and intimacy with God. WOMEN OF THE WORD: WINNING THE WORRY BATTLE LIFE LESSONS FROM THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Mondays Beginning September 10 (6 weeks) 6:30-8:30 PM D200 Leaders: Rebecca Pickett and Ange Grout $12 Have you ever tried to fight worry with faith and felt you were losing the battle? This study reviews three tools a person can develop to Fight in Faith: 1) embracing God s promises, 2) courage and commitment under pressure and 3) practicing radical obedience while waiting for God to deliver your victory. BIBLE STUDY FOR BUSY LIVES! DISCIPLE FAST TRACK: OLD TESTAMENT Mondays Beginning September 10 (12 weeks) 7 8:30 PM Conference Room Leader: Daniel Scholl $13 This study provides a thorough introduction to the Old Testament. Explore the big questions of faith and life through the lens of Scripture and build a solid foundation for future Bible studies. This will be a welcoming group and is ideal for new Christians or those new to Bible study. MDUMC MOMS BIBLE STUDY Tuesdays Beginning September 11 (Through December 18) 9:15 11 AM (Nursery Available 9-11 AM) C200 We are a group of moms with children of any age, but specifically those with infants through 6 th graders. We are about connecting moms, helping each other through life, and growing closer to God. Throughout the school year, we will do Bible and book studies along with fellowship, volunteer opportunities, guest speakers, and a few moms nights out. OCTOBER FIVE MEANS OF GRACE: EXPERIENCE GOD S LOVE THE WESLEYAN WAY Wednesdays Beginning October 3 (6 weeks) 11 AM 12:30 PM D203 Leader: Sandy Earthman $7 Learn how to reorder your life and deepen your faith through prayer, scripture, and worship. You will also learn how to recognize and affirm the outward signs of divine Grace while deepening your relationship with God. JOURNEY TO JOURNALING: WRITE YOUR STORY Thursdays Beginning October 4 (6 weeks) 7 8:30 PM D203 Leader: Betty Kristoffersen No Charge - Limit 10 Leader Betty Kristoffersen states, I write to share the experience and relationship of being a child of God, and to accept the best that life has to offer. We see miracles every day and when we write things down it saves it for future generations. Join me in journaling! WALK TO EMMAUS Men s Walk: October 4-7 Women s Walk: October Contact: VickyHarris@mdumc.org The Walk to Emmaus is a 72-hour (Thursday evening Sunday evening) spiritual renewal program that is wrapped in prayer and meditation with special times of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion. Rediscover Christ s presence in your life and form friendships that foster faith and support spiritual maturity! PRAYING IN THE MESSINESS OF LIFE: 7 WAYS TO RENEW YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Wednesdays Beginning October 10 (5 weeks) 1-2:30 PM D200 Leader: Betty Cartmell $9 Author Linda Douty encourages you to incorporate prayer into your daily life as it is, rather than trying to find more time to pray. Her fresh ideas for weaving prayer into each day will help you connect with God even in the messiness of life. You will feel closer to God and better able to cope with your circumstances with practical ways.

4 CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER RETREAT Monday, October 15 9 AM 3 PM Ruah Villa de Matel (6510 Lawndale Street) $25 Please RSVP to VictorResendiz@mdumc.org by Friday, October 5 Our world is plenty noisy and it s difficult to find a place to breathe. Come and spend time in silent prayer in this unique opportunity to connect in a deeper level with God. The Ruah Center exists to provide this gift of solitude so you can learn to listen with your heart for the voice of God. Bring your favorite spiritual books, Bible or just bring yourself. Jennifer Veres-Schrecengost will lead all of our adult Sunday school leaders and members in Small Groups in the Wesleyan Tradition. DISCERNING THE VOICE OF GOD: HOW TO RECOGNIZE WHEN GOD SPEAKS Mondays Beginning October 29 (7 weeks) 6:30 8:30 PM D200 Leaders: Rebecca Pickett and Ange Grout $18 Priscilla Shirer shares her insights based on practical experience and years of biblical study. She writes about how God has invited her to know God better. And the more intimate she has become with God, the more acquainted she has become with God s voice. Learn insights that will aid you in your desire to hear God speak and recognize how God keeps in touch with God s beloved people. NOVEMBER ANSWERING GOD: THE PSALMS AS TOOLS FOR PRAYER Mondays Beginning November 5 (5 weeks) 6:30 8 PM D201 Wednesdays Beginning November 7 (5 weeks) 6:45-8 PM D201 Leader: Rev. Victor Resendiz $10 Eugene H. Peterson speaks to Christians who realize the necessity for prayer and yearn for it but who find their prayer unconvincing and unsatisfying. Addressing the causes of this dissatisfaction, Answering God offers guidelines for using the Psalms as dynamic tools for prayer. ONGOING EVENING MEDITATION FOR CHRISTIANS Tuesdays 7-8 PM C201 Leaders: Betty Cartmell and Pamela Lucia No Charge Often called prayer of the heart, the quiet prayer discipline of meditation has been used by Christians for centuries to cultivate a deeper relationship with Christ who dwells in each of us. We read and discuss short topics on this gentle prayer, also known as centering prayer and contemplation. And, we will spend time praying silently together as beginners and advanced practitioners. MEDITATION AS A STRESS RELIEVER Wednesdays 11 11:50 AM D200 Leader: Betty Cartmell No Charge The meetings for the month of September will begin with the variety of ways in which meditation helps us deal with stress. This is in addition to our usual readings and prayer time that will continue through the fall. Everyone is welcome. SINGLES COMMUNITY BIBLE STUDY Wednesdays Beginning September 12 7:30 PM D101 Contact: SheriKelley@mdumc.org Singles gather to study the Word of God using the Lifeguide Bible Study series. This is an ongoing group that takes a short break between series. At the completion of each study, the group decides the topic for the next study. All singles, church members or not, are welcome!

5 MEN S LIFE: Tuesdays 6:30 7:30 AM The Refuge on the West Campus Contact: MichaelJarboe@mdumc.org Join for breakfast, a short lesson, and fellowship with other MDUMC men. We will have you out the door by 7:30 AM to get on the road to work as better men, dads, husbands and disciples of Christ! LIGHTEN UP - A BIBLE STUDY FOR BUSY MOMS Tuesdays Beginning September :30 PM The Refuge on the West Campus $60 (includes book and weekly lunch) Contact: KarenCrawford@mdumc.org Whether you re new to Bible study or a seasoned veteran, Lighten Up invites you to be a part of our weekly community. Each Tuesday starts with a delicious lunch followed by a short video and great small group time. We will pass out the studyw guides on September 18 and dive into Chapter 1 the following week. Bring a friend! SUNDAY SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES BRIDGEBUILDERS Senior Adults Sundays at 9:30 AM Wesley Hall (Main Campus) We are a warm, caring, supportive group of Christians who share each other s burdens and celebrate each other s joys, all while studying to strengthen our faith and deepen our knowledge of God s word. COVENANT Couples and Singles 50s-60s Sundays at 9:30 AM D203 (Main Campus) The Covenant Class focuses on discussing the Bible as it relates to life and consists of couples and singles age 50 s to 60 s with school-age children. We believe in participating in group projects in the community and have regular gatherings outside of class. DISCOVERY Mostly Couples mid 40s early 60s Sundays at 9:30 AM D200 (Main Campus) Our class lessons use a discussion format and cover a variety of topics. We sponsor service projects throughout the year and have frequent adult or family social events. FOUNDATIONS Families with Small Children Sundays at 9:30 AM C201 (Main Campus) Luke 6:48 states that a firm foundation cannot be shaken and this group will focus on making sure the foundation in your own house stands firm. In Foundations we will support one another and grow our own faith as we strive to pass our faith on to our children. FRIENDSHIP Couples and Singles 60+ Sundays at 9:30 AM D100 (Main Campus) Lessons are taught by our members and by outside speakers who cover wide-ranging, typically Methodist subjects. GENESIS Couples 60+ Sundays at 9:30 AM D201 (Main Campus) Through prayer, study, lively weekly discussions and fellowship, we seek to nurture our continued growth in the Spirit of Christ and to share our gifts through active participation in the life of the church and the community. GOOD NEWS Couples and Singles 65+ Sundays at 11 AM D204 (Main Campus) Varied class lessons including lecture and spirited discussions are taught by our members and outside teachers. Outreach includes Soupmobile, Larkin Center, MAM, etc. Varied social activities are enjoyed also. KINDRED SOULS Single and Married Women Sundays at 9:30 AM Conference Room (Main Campus) Offering a group setting for women who attend church alone, whether single or married, our class follows the Adult Bible Study Series and is led by class members. Visitors and new members are welcome. We are open to women of all ages. OPEN DOOR Couples and Singles 40s - 60s Sundays at 9:30 AM D101 (Main Campus) Join this newest class as we learn, grow, and serve in faith.

6 PROBERS Couples and Singles 65+ Sundays at 9:30 AM D204 (Main Campus) The Probers class has a lively interest in the values of today s society as they relate to Christians. Our class hosts a variety of speakers from the class, church and community. By probing into the hard questions, we foster lively discussion and offer our members an opportunity to grow theologically and scripturally. ROOTS Couples and Singles 60+ Sundays at 9:30 AM Adult Ministries Center - Room 462 (West Campus) Our focus is on Bible study and family issues. We are a great support group for many of our ministry events, such as workcamps and the Soupmobile. SINGLES IN ACTION Singles 40+ Sundays at 9:30 AM Dance Room (Main Campus) We are singles of all ages who are willing to admit our imperfections and are interested in growing spiritually toward perfection! We enjoy short-term studies presented in a discussion format by class members. Some of those studies include The Ragamuffin Gospel, The Gift of the Blessing and When God Doesn t Answer Your Prayer. We support and encourage each other as we travel this journey called life. This group is very welcoming and active in the Singles Ministry and in the general ministry of the church, especially missions and outreach. SUNRIZON Singles and Couples 40s-60s Sundays at 9:30 AM D202 (Main Campus) Members grow spiritually through thoughtful presentations that stimulate openminded discussion and weave Christian teachings with today s complex issues in progressive and traditional ways. In addition to being involved in church-related community outreach projects, the Sunrizon class is one of the most socially active groups in the church. UPPER ROOM Adults of all Ages and Stages Sundays at 9:30 AM D206 (Main Campus) Believing that Bible study is a contact sport of the mind and heart, class members are responsible for leading the discussions each Sunday. One book of the Bible is studied in depth alternating between Old Testament and New Testament. VISIONS Couples with Children Sundays at 9:30 AM D205 (Main Campus) Lessons include Bible study, Christian living issues and discussions aimed at strengthening our faith. We seek to apply our faith by serving our community and encouraging our families. We have a variety of adult and family social events.
