Today s Readings from the New Revised Standard Version Bible Sentence: You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. Psalm 86: 15 Collect: God of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things, graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us all goodness, and of your treat mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Isaiah 44: Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. 7 Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. 8 Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one. Psalm 86: Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name. 12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. 13 For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. 14 O God, the insolent rise up against me; a band of ruffians seeks my life, and they do not set you before them. 15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. 16 Turn to me and be gracious to me; give your strength to your servant; save the child of your serving girl. 17 Show me a sign of your favour, so that those who hate me may see it and be put to shame, because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me. 3 Romans 8: So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ--if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. 18 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20 for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Matthew 13:24-30, He put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away.

26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. 27 And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?' 28 He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' The slaves said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?' 29 But he replied, 'No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. 30 Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'" 36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples aproached him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field." 37 He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; 38 the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, 42 and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen! Gospel Comment In the Middle East the highly toxic weed darnel was not unknown to wheat growers, and industrial sabotage, sowing darnel amongst wheat, was quite feasible. When I was a priest in remote South-West Queensland many farmers were switching to the drought resistant hair-sheep breed damara; inter-breeding of damara with merino could destroy a livelihood. If traces of the dark and medullated fibres (DMF) of damara are found in merino fleeces the merino famer s wool value could evaporate. Just one determined damara ram could push through the often remote and dilapidated boundary fence (properties out west are not considered viable under about 60,000 acres: that s a lot of boundary fence to maintain) and cause fiscal rout. If such contamination occurred tensions could run very high (in the outback nobody hears you scream, though on a more sober note the screams were more likely to tell of suicide than homicide). Jesus parable was very real. For merino farmers the separation was not possible, though the result was more likely to be fiscal disaster and enmity than the death that darnel might inflict on the unwary. But stakes were high either way, and Jesus is clearly not speaking of matters he considered trivial. In the polite world of western Christianity we tend to embarrassment at language of tares, wheat and apocalyptic fires. Yet still today, as in the time of Jesus first followers, a mixture of wheat and tares might well lead to the execution of followers of Jesus. COTTAGE LUNCHES Judith and the Hospitality team are planning a repeat of the very successful Cottage Lunches on Sunday 17 th Au- gust, from 12.30pm. These will be along similar lines as the two previous years events, ie one household hosting parishioners for an informal lunch (soup & rolls or similar). There is a sign-up clip-board sheet on the back table - please indicate if you are willing to host a lunch, or numbers planning to attend. $12 adults, $5 children. Enquiries to Judith, ph

I have asked Jenny Dawson to chair the meet the candidates session (Sunday 3rd August, 4.00pm, at St Paul s) not because I don t applaud our EJP group for staging the meeting, but because as someone who last had his head around NZ politics when Rob Muldoon was Prime Minister I am probably not the right person to be chairing meetings of New Zealand political conversation. I was in New Zealand for the 2008 election, but prior to that had not voted since Muldoon defeated Rowling in There has been a change or two since then! That 1981 election changed the way we vote for ever. Still first past the post, it was one of those highly charged elections when the party that won the most votes did not win parliament. Social Credit won two seats, and something called the Values Party was criticised by some for drawing votes away from Social Credit. It was all beyond me; I fled to Australia in time to vote in the landslide that first elected the Drover s Dog, Bob Hawke. Imagine my bewilderment in 2008: there were, it seemed, about 4592 parties represented in the New Zealand Parliament! I still have very little understanding of any of them. People seem to arrive in parliament by various routes. Only someone called Winston Peters, who seems to have represented all 4592 parties since about the year 1392, has occasionally made it onto my political radar; I m not sure what (or who) he stands for. Nor is he, I suspect. I manage frequently to display my ignorance: I call the ACT Party the A-C-T party, but I think most people call them Act. I have no idea who or what they stand for, either. I once wrote a letter to a Māori Party From Your Dean 5 politician whose website proudly proclaimed all correspondence will be answered : I m still waiting, Mr Harawira. The 1980s, when Muldoon and Rowling (they haven t made a hit, they re ruining the country more than just a bit ) squared off across the parliamentary floor, were heady days. I understood politics then. After that I dealt with Fraser, Hawke, Keating, Howard, and a plethora of Labor [sic] prime ministers in one term; then Abbott, and over the years more leaders of the opposition than I can recall. My whakapapa is different to yours. Where our whakapapa coincides is the corporate memory of partisan church positions on matters political. In the Australia of the 1950s Roman Catholic Archbishop Daniel Mannix demonstrated a not very covert support for the Democratic Labor Party that split Labor votes in Australia and left the party in the wilderness until In New Zealand the less explosive off-shoot of Citizens for Rowling, Clergy for Rowling, led to at least some departures from the churches, and certainly historians suggest Citizens for Rowling backfired and gave Rob Muldoon (and Bob Jones) lots of political adrenaline and oxygen. So the meeting at St. Paul s, sponsored by EJP (technically a sub-committee auspiced by our vestry) is not partisan. It is however an opportunity for us to remember that we have the privilege of living in a democracy. While (contra G.W. Bush) I don t think democracy is the gospel, I think it s pretty good, and hope many of us will take the opportunity to put our questions and concerns to the candidates.

The Creed and Crossed Fingers INCARNATE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE VIRGIN MARY If we want to set out to offend our Muslim cousins, this is the way to do it. This clause in our creeds, taken literally, remains an all but insurmountable stumbling block in inter-faith dialogue and even peaceful co-existence. Like it or not, we give the impression that our God, like the Gods of the ancient cultures, has sex with mortals. Even the biblical language found to be with child from the Holy Spirit (Mt. 1.18) or The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you (Lk. 1.35) is deeply unsettling to those unused to it. This language must always speak not of what police delicately call carnal knowledge but of the power of the Creator precisely to create. I have no interest in those back door theologies that suggest that, because parthenogenesis (birth without intercourse) is not scientific, therefore Mary must have had relations, voluntary or otherwise, with a passing soldier or some such other theory. No: as Matthew and Luke wrote their accounts of the conception of Jesus they had no doubt they were writing, to cite Kendrick, of the God who flung stars into space and perhaps who still does so. The God who flicks galaxies (and quarks) across eternity has no difficulty in breathing redemption into the womb of a willing, holy, humble peasant girl, blessed amongst women, of the tribe of David. And so begins the entrance of God into human suffering, so that suffering can be turned into hope. FROM DEANLY DELVINGS...every great book leaves us empty handed. Jabès, Book of Questions II (1991), 36. ENVIRONMENT-JUSTICE-PEACE NETWORK NEWS Our focus on CHILD POVERTY led to a motion being adopted at the HB Regional Conference and we hope our parish will follow it up with appropriate action (watch this space!). There is also a NZ Social Justice initiative for a painting competition in all our NZ schools on this theme. Contact Sue John if you have contacts for this. MEET THE CANDIDATES at St Paul s Presbyterian Church on Sunday 3 August, 4 pm. EJP is organising this but requests help in advertising it widely and in sending in questions which we prepare beforehand for the candidates. At this point the three Major Party candidates for Napier Electorate are committed to coming. If other parties field candidates we will include them. question suggestions to Murray Mills muju@xtra.co.nz or ph Rev d Jenny Dawson has agreed to chair the meeting. LIGHT A CANDLE FOR PEACE - special prayers at the Cathedral 12 noon on Monday 4 August. This coincides with the beginning of World War 1 and is being observed by peace movements and religious groups around the world as a day of prayer with emphasis on remembering on praying for an end to all war and for the promotion of the peaceful resolution of all conflict. You are invited to bring your own prayers / reflections to share with others. We had a fruitful discussion with Heather Moller of Anglican Social Services and several ideas to strengthen our loving service as a parish are being further explored. Welcome home to Jenny Baker. We now know how much she did for EJP!! MINISTRY EDUCATOR TO RETIRE The Reverend Oenone Woodhams has this week announced her retirement as Diocesan Ministry Educator, anticipated to take effect late September/early October. With her husband Mike, Oenone plans to travel overseas and is therefore not intending to pursue any other ministry positions within Waiapu. 6

The HB Regional Conference was held in Waipukurau last Saturday an edited report from Rev d Jenny Dawson (HB Regn Dean) follows:- It was very special for everyone at this year s Regional Conference to be hosted by the Waipukurau Parish in the Hall where they have been worshipping since Easter Day. The motion brought from the parish (coming from their own experience) was That Standing Committee revises the Policy on Buildings for the Diocese of Waiapu, approved and implemented at Synod 2013, to include more definitive criteria for closure of a building that may be deemed to be not fit for purpose. It was discussed (and passed) alongside others on Child Poverty and the length of term for our representative to the Cathedral Chapter. One about the Vestry election cycle was lost. The morning began with a Eucharist led by people from across the Ruahine District, then moved into a panel discussion: The Call of the Few to Support the Call of the Many. Participants illustrated very CURSILLO 2014 Lay people lead Cursillo weekends with two or three members of the clergy functioning as spiritual advisors. The three days are commonly filled with talks and group discussions on the Christian understanding of Grace, the Sacraments, and the great Cursillo threelegged stool: Piety, Study, and Action.; plus fellowship, singing, good food, and time for privacy, meditation, prayer, and walks. The next Ultreya, Encouragement Day, open to both existing and future Cursillo participants, is to be held at well the changing face of priestly ministry: in our region there are not only vicars, but priest-missioners, hospital and other chaplains, LSM and NSM priests, and two different kinds of deans, as God calls a diversity of people to serve in a variety of contexts. There was also time after the AGM for presentations by Peter O Brien from Anglican Social Services, and Jocelyn Czerwonka who talked about a proposed trip to Tonga for young people in July The Vicar-General s chairing of the afternoon s AGM, and current huge contribution to diocesan life, was acknowledged. Election results include several Cathedral Parish members being elected to wider church roles - Alison Thomson and Rev d Howard Pilgrim (lay and clergy nominations for Standing Committee); Rev d Dorothy Brooker (Standing Committee Nominations Board); Michael Morgan and Rev d Margaret Thompson (lay and clergy representatives on the HB Regional Board of Nominators) St Luke s Havelock North Saturday 9 th August 10.00am to 3.30pm. Seventeen Waiapu laypeople and two clergy are presently undertaking vigorous team training to offer a Cursillo mixed-gender Combined Three-day Weekend at Mi-Camp Taupo Thursday 16th to Sunday 19 th October Those intending to do the Three-Day Weekend in October are asked to have their completed registration with their Kaitautoko/companion by Friday 19 th September at the latest.
