It was a very joy-filled experience for me. I know these occasions do not just happen, but involve a great deal of planning, hard work and inconvenience to many. As the Cathedral parish also provided a delicious afternoon tea for so many who had travelled even more work was required. So this is to express my heartfelt thanks to you and the team that worked so hard, and hosted us so generously. Thank you, Julie Guest 2

Today s Readings from the New Revised Standard Version Bible Sentence: Watch and be ready, for you do not know on what day our Lord is coming. Matt. 24: 42, 44 Collect: Almighty and everlasting God, by your Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified; hear the prayers we offer for all your faithful people that in the ministry to which you have called us we may serve you in holiness and truth; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Genesis 15: After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great. 2 But Abram said, O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir. 4 But the word of the Lord came to him, This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir. 5 He brought him outside and said, Look towards heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them. Then he said to him, So shall your descendants be. 6 And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. Psalm 33: How blest are the people whose God is the Lord: the people you chose as your own possession. 13 You Lord look down from heaven upon all people: from the place where you dwell you consider all who inhabit the earth. 14 You fashion the hearts of them all: and observe all their deeds. 15 A king is not saved by a mighty army: nor is a warrior delivered by much strength. 16 A horse is a vain thing to count on for victory: nor will it save anyone by its great strength. 17 But your eye O Lord is on those who fear you: on those who rely on your steadfast love, 18 to deliver them from death: and to keep them alive in famine. 19 We have waited eagerly for you O Lord: for you are our help and our shield. 20 Our heart shall rejoice in you: because we have hoped in your holy name. 21 Let your constant love attend us O Lord: as we put our trust in you. Hebrews 11: 1-3, Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is 3

God. 11 By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old--and Sarah herself was barren--because he considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, "as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore." 13 All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, 14 for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them. come and serve them. 38 If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. 39 But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Luke 12: Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 35 Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36 be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will 4

FROM THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION NEWS SERVICE [ACNS by Gavin Drake] Experts are assessing damage to the metropolitical church of the Province of Southern Africa after part of the roof collapsed on Friday (29 th July). Officials at the Cathedral of St George the Martyr in Cape Town had been concerned about the condition of the roof for some time and had launched an appeal to replace the roof and its 40,000 tiles. But after heavy rains last week, part of the roof gave way. The collapse was caused by rain water which had worked its way through broken tiles and softened the ceiling s cement. Nobody was injured in the collapse. When we found parts of the ceiling had collapsed, we immediately cordoned off the area, the Dean of Cape Town, Very Revd Michael Weeder, told the Independent newspaper. You must remember the cathedral is a heritage site and is a very old building. Upon further inspection, we found the roof is in a far worse condition than we thought. Before Friday s partial collapse, South Africa s National Lottery Board had provided a grant of 7.5 million Rand (approx 408,000 GBP) towards the roof repairs but a further 4 million Rand is needed to complete the roof repairs. In total, some 20 million Rand is required to complete repairs to the Cathedral. The Independent reports that Archbishop Thabo Makgba, Primate of Southern Africa, fears that the Cathedral would not make it through another winter without repairs. 5 [Anglican Journal, by André Forget] For 170 years, the gothic tower of St Paul s Cathedral, (Diocese of Huron, Canada) has overlooked downtown London, Ontario. But an unstable roof and sagging walls now threaten the building s structural integrity, and unless money can be raised in time to repair it before winter sets in, the building could become unsafe, says senior churchwarden Melissa Broadfoot. We cannot go through another winter, she told the Anglican Journal. The danger is that it will become unsafe... so we re really trying to save the building. The fault, Broadfoot explained, lies with the wooden trusses that hold up the roof. After decades of water damage, the ends of the trusses have rotted away, putting more pressure on the walls and leading to water damage to the brick. The parish became aware of the issue in 2013, when persistent water infiltration caused plaster to start peeling off the walls. But the extent of the problem was only revealed in 2015, when a full inspection of the church s gutter work was undertaken. Engineers were contracted to install steel shores that would keep the building stable in the short term, new gutters and downpipes were installed, and plans were made for more comprehensive work in The restoration comes with a significant price tag: roughly $1 million [CAD, approx. 579,000 GBP] to cover the structural repairs to the roof, with further costs related to cosmetic restoration in the interior to be incurred after the project is complete.

WEST PAPUA PETITION Following momentum gained through Rev d Socratez Yoman s visit to Aotearoa New Zealand a petition has been launched calling on the New Zealand Government to speak out about the human rights situation in West Papua. This is a collaborative effort and support is needed to collect as many signatures as we can by 24 August. Hopefully this will add some pressure and motivation as the Government delegation heads to the Federated States of Melanesia for the Pacific Island Forum summit in early September. There are petition forms on the back table for signing. The petition respectfully requests: That the House of Representatives urge the New Zealand Government to address the ongoing human rights situation in West Papua by taking the following actions: Publicly advocate the Indonesian Government to uphold the rights of the people of West Papua to freedom of assembly and freedom of speech; Condemn Indonesia for the arrest and intimidation of thousands of peaceful protestors in West Papua in the last two years; Condemn the state sanctioned torture and killing of West Papuans; Support the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression to visit West Papua; and Urge the Pacific Island Forum to support this stand and advocate for West Papua at the United Nations.
