3 Sentence: How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good tidings of salvation. Isaiah 52: 7 Collect: Almighty God, you inspired Luke the physician to proclaim the love and healing power of your Son; give your Church grace through his teaching to strengthen the afflicted, heal the desolate and bind up the broken-hearted; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Isaiah 35: 3-6: Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. Psalm 147: 1-7 (ANZPB page 370) Today s Readings from the New Revised Standard Version Bible Whakamoemititia a Ihowa / Praise the Lord, for it is good to sing praises to our God: how pleasant and seemly it is to praise the Most High. You Lord are rebuilding Jerusalem: and gathering the scattered exiles of Israel. You are healing the broken-hearted: and binding up their wounds. You count the number of the stars: and call them all by their names. Great are you O Lord, and mighty your power: yes, and your wisdom is infinite. You raise up the lowly: and bring down the wicked to the dust. Sing to the Lord in thanksgiving: make music on the harp to our God. 2 Timothy 4: As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. 6 As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 9 Do your best to come to me soon, 10 for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry. 12 I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will pay him back for his deeds. 15 You also must beware of him, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion s mouth. Luke 10: After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to
4 every town and place where he himself intended to go. 2 He said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. 3 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this house! 6 And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; 9 cure the sick who are there, and say to them, The kingdom of God has come near to you. St Luke the Evangelist According to information given us by Paul in his letters, Luke was a Gentile, a physician, a dear friend of Paul (Colossians 4:14), and at one point apparently Paul s only companion in prison (2 Timothy 4:10,11). The New Testament tells us no more about Luke directly, but since the time of the Muratorian Canon (c.180) tradition has recognised Luke as the author of the anonymous third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Since parts of Acts (16:10-18; 20:5-15; 27:27-28:16) purport to be narrated by an unidentified travelling companion of Paul, this tradition may come from an intelligent deduction from the references to Luke in the epistles combined with the account in Acts. The general location of these we passages may also suggest that Luke came from Macedonia, but another tradition associates him with Anti- och in Syria. The narrated sections are stylistically homogeneous with the rest of Acts, tending to confirm that the author was himself the companion of Paul. But questions arise when the theological standpoint of Luke-Acts is compared with that of the Pauline letters. The author seems to know nothing of some of the key elements in Pauline theology. The cross is understood as part of the whole exemplary career of Jesus, rather than as the means of salvation from the power of sin. The struggle over the Law, which preoccupied Paul in his letters, is completely absent from his speeches in Acts. The two-volume narrative of Luke-Acts takes as its major emphasis the story of the transition of the gospel from the home of the Jewish religion, Jerusalem, to Rome, the heart of the imperial world. It is a gospel for all: for the poor, for foreigners, for women, for all who might have thought their disadvantage denied them salvation. Jesus is the first Christian, his example followed by the heroes of the early church. His example and theirs are recorded for us to follow in our world. What happened to Luke after the death of Paul in Rome is not known, though according to one tradition he wrote his Gospel and Acts in Greece and died at the age of 84 in Boeotia in Greece. (from For All the Saints, page 392-3) ST LUKE THE EVANGELIST The winged ox is a reference to Luke s Gospel which deals with the sacrificial aspects of Christ s life. 4
5 What kind of world do we want to leave behind? Pope Francis 2015 LAUDATO SI Pope Francis Teaching Letter On the care of our Common Home I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all. Pope Francis 2015 A few months ago, Pope Francis wrote the encyclical Laudato Si. The letter is addressed not only to Catholics but to every person on earth. It is an urgent appeal to look at how we are shaping the future of our plant. Sub-titled On the Care of our Common Home, Pope Francis speaks as a moral and spiritual guide. He asks that we face reality. He doesn t speak as a scientist or a politician, and recognises that there are points which are subject to debate. He wants to encourage an exploration that is honest and open to the common good. The Catholic Parish of Napier is providing an opportunity for its parishioners and anyone interested to learn more about Laudato Si and to explore what it means to us personally and as a community. INVITATION WHAT? One workshop with two parts on Laudato Si WHY?
