WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 5 August Peace Sunday 8.00 am Eucharist (Resurrection Chapel) Dean Ian Render am Choral Eucharist - Liturgist: Jennifer Harris Director of Music: Anthony Tattersall Organist: Gary Bowler with the Waiapu Cathedral Choir Setting: Darke in F Preacher & Presider: Dean Ian Render Please ensure all cellphones are switched OFF when in the Cathedral; and, if necessary, adjust hearing aids to the Loop system. PEACE SUNDAY: Weather permitting we gather at the Olive Tree outside of the Cathedral to commemorate the plaque acknowledging the decision of the Cathedral to be nuclear-free. See inside this bulletin for the liturgy. 10 years ago EJP (Environment Justice and Peace Network) took up the reins of the Hawke's Bay Regional Social Justice group and before that, from the decade beginning 1983, the Cathedral Peace Group. It was this group that paved the way for a Nuclear Free parish, and then city. Today the anti nuclear and peace issues are alive and well in our world. Just this week NZ is again among the first countries to sign the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons. EJP invites you all to an open workshop on Peace Action in our World Today, led by Liz Remmerswaal, 3.00pm to 4.15 pm Sunday 12 August here at the Cathedral. Low-Gluten wafers (below 20ppm) are now available - please advise the Presider, or one of the Welcoming team, if this is your dietary requirement. NOTE: Bell Tower and entrance are earthquake prone as assessed under the Building Act use at your own risk!

LITURGY OF REMEMBRANCE 10.00am The Congregation gather at the Olive Tree, weather permitting On August the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Forty years later, also on August 6th, Pacific leaders signed the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone treaty. It came into force in New Zealand in December Hot off the press: July 31st 2018,N Z ratified the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. In silence let us remember all those who have died or suffered as a result of nuclear weapons and nuclear power accidents, and the continuing defilement of this planet. (Silence) Isaiah of old said: They shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Hymn Isaiah the prophet has written of old (Joy F. Patterson, American Folk Melody) IN 1984 this olive tree, symbol of peace, was planted and this stone unveiled to mark the Cathedral s lead in working for a nuclear free New Zealand. The words of the plaque are read by one of the 1984 Peace Group: PLANTED TO COMMEMORATE THE DECLARING OF THE CATHEDRAL TO BE A NUCLEAR FREE ZONE. The threat of unleashing nuclear weapons and the build up of armaments is as serious an issue today as in As a parish we re-commit ourselves to the ongoing work of peace and reconciliation. We say together the ancient words of Micah: What does the Lord require of us but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God. Sprigs of olive leaves are shared for us to carry with us to our homes. The choir leads us into the Cathedral 2

Today A very warm Welcome to all who are worshipping with us especially if you are visiting Napier or at the Cathedral for the first time you are invited to join us for morning tea (or coffee!) served at the back of the Cathedral following the am service. Today we will give thanks for the work of the knitting group and bless their latest work for distribution to those in need During the winter months, the 8.00am Eucharist will be held in the Resurrection Chapel (south-west corner of the Cathedral, adjacent to the stairs to the Gallery) Today the Rev d Margaret Thompson, our Administrator, is on leave and returns to work on Wednesday 15 August Peace Graphic used by permission from pngtree.com If the Introit Isaiah the prophet has already been sung outside we stand to join in the Processional Hymn: For the healing of the nations. If the weather is inclement, we remain seated for the Introit to be sung by the Choir, then stand for the hymn. 1. For the healing of the nations, Let us pray with one accord, for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords. To a life of love in action help us rise and pledge our word. 2. Lead us forward into freedom, from despair your world release, that, redeemed from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace. Show us how through care and goodness fear will die and hope increase. 3. All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned: pride of status, race or schooling, dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice may we hallow brief life's span. 4. You, Creator God, have written your great name on humankind; for our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind; that by our response and service earth its destiny may find. Words: Fred Kaan Tune: LAUDA ANIMA aka PRAISE MY SOUL The congregation is greeted informally and then the service continues on p. 404 of A New Zealand Prayerbook / He Karakia Mihinare o Aotearoa Thanksgiving of the People of God 3

NZPB page: The Gathering of the Community NZPB page: Preparation / Kyries / Confession NZPB page: 408 Absolution / Sentence / Collect Sentence: Collect: Reading: If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12:18 God our loving Creator, you have made of one blood all the nations of the earth and will that they live together in peace and harmony; so order the course of this world that all people may be brought together under Christ s most gentle rule, and your Holy Spirit s instruction. Amen. Peace for the nations (NZPB p.90) Richard Harris Reflective Hymn: The peace of mind that Christ can bring : 1.The peace of mind that Christ can bring is peace in knowing how to sing in spite of doubts of why or how, in spite of fears of here and now. 2. The peace that strengthens faithful souls cannot be built on self-made goals, but rather comes to those who heed a call for help in time of need. 3.So one finds peace within the heart when each with other bears a part. When peace for me is peace for you, then Christ is present, peace is true. 4. So Christ employ our life and will until we see your justice still defining best all human worth, reshaping dreams of peace on earth. Jane Parker Huber Tune: TALLIS CANON Reading: Gradual Hymn: A new heaven and a new earth (NZPB p.91) Christine Kerr Where shall be found? (overleaf) 4

1. Where shall be found that holy ground where we may plant the tree of peace, strong to survive through fire and storm where shall such peace be born? 2. Our common theme, our deepest dream, to see the tree of peace outspread, shelter for each and every one: how shall such peace become? 3. Christ is our peace, Christ our release from fear and hatred, lust for power; Christ is that young and greening tree growing for you and me. 4. Here is the place where by God s grace, we in our time must plant Christ s peace, deep in our hearts and minds and souls, making the dream come true. Colin A. Gibson, Tune: PEACETREE Gospel Reading: The Beatitudes Rev d Dorothy Brooker The Sermon: Dean Ian Render A Community Affirmation for Peace: We affirm that our earth s security rests not in armaments, but in the justice of adequate housing and food, in the justice of meaningful education and work, in the justice of an economic order that gives everyone access to our earth s abundance, in the justice of human relationships nourished by co-operation, in the justice of safe, clean, and renewable energy, instead of the perils of nuclear power. We affirm people over property, community over selfishness, respect for others regardless of sex, race or class. We choose to be peacemakers rather than peace-keepers, we choose a nuclear-free future and we will settle for nothing less. We unite ourselves with sisters and brothers the world over to join together in communities of resistance to the nuclear threat. We unite ourselves with trust in the Spirit of Life; justice and love will overcome the machines of destruction. Before us are set life and death: we choose life, that we and our children may live. 5 (excerpted)

NZPB page: 413ff The Prayers of the People led by Br. Graham-Michoel Wills NZPB page: 419 The Peace We greet the people near us, saying Peace be with you / Kia tau te rangimarie. During the next hymn the bread and wine, symbols of Christ s life, are brought to the altar; our offerings of money to support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral are collected and brought forward also. Offertory Hymn: O Christ who by a cross made peace your sign 1 O Christ, who by a cross made peace your sign, who gives your peace in water, bread and wine: O Spirit Christ who is our spirit's home, teach us the secret of the true shalom. 2 We speak of peace when in our hearts we war and, unforgiving, keep our grudges sore; we promise peace while yet we strive to win, and in our enemy, see not our kin. 3 Two deaths now face the starving and the fed - the blinding bomb, the simple lack of bread; with riches of the earth at our command, from weaponry to welcome, turn our hand. 4 The selfishness which is our human curse, the arsenal of hatred which we nurse - all are dispelled when in our hearts we say: "There is no way to peace: peace is the way." Words: Shirley Erena Murray Tune SURSUM CORDA NZPB page: The Preparation of the Gifts & The Great Thanksgiving NZPB page: The Lord s Prayer & The Invitation The Choir sing the Agnus Dei whilst the communion assistants receive communion; then the Choir move to the altar rails to receive communion; then all are welcome to share the bread and wine of Christ s life, or to receive a blessing - please come to the altar rails via the centre aisle and return to your seats via the side aisles (or use the ramp if necessary and take a place at the rear altar rail). Please advise an usher if you need to have communion served in your seat. 6

During communion, the Choir will sing: Ave Verum Byrd NZPB page: The Blessing: Prayer after communion Dean Ian Render We share notices and news and bless the knitted garments Recessional Hymn: This is my song, O God of all the nations 1. This is my song, O God of all the nations, A song of peace for lands afar and mine. This is my home, the country where my heart is; Here are my hopes, my dreams, my sacred shrine. But other hearts in other lands are beating, With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine. 2. My country s skies are bluer than the ocean, And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and vine. But other lands have sunlight too and clover, And skies are everywhere as blue as mine. O hear my song, true God of all the nations, A song of peace for their land and for mine. 3. This is my prayer, O Sovereign of earth's kingdoms: Your kingdom come; on earth your will be done. Let Christ be lifted up till all shall know him, And hearts united learn to live as one. O hear my prayer, true God of all the nations; Myself I give you, let your will be done. Text: vv. 1-2 Lloyd Stone ( ), v.3 Georgia Harkness (1939) adapted Tune: FINLANDIA NZPB page: 429 The Dismissal Hymns reproduced under Licence #CCLI Dean Ian s sermons can be found on rendertogod.wordpress.com These bulletins are available on our website: 7
