Today A very warm Welcome to all who are worshipping with us especially if you are visiting Napier or at the Cathedral for the first time you are invited to join us for morning tea (or coffee!) served at the back of the Cathedral following the 10am service. During the winter months, the 8.00am Eucharist will be held in the Resurrection Chapel (south-west corner of the Cathedral, adjacent to the stairs to the Gallery) Today the Rev d Margaret Thompson is on leave; Dean Ian & Bishop Andrew are attending the ordination of the Rev d Chris Swannell in Whangarei. Chris serves in the Local Shared Ministry Team at Christ Church, Russell. Both the Bishop and Ian have known Chris for many years. Chris travelled to Napier for the Dean s installation. Dean Ian and Bishop Andrew are glad to participate in this Diocese of Auckland celebration. (A consequence of the motion passed at General Synod last May) At 2.30 pm this afternoon, Eugene Lavery (a NZ er but now based in the USA) presents his organ recital. Door sales available from 2.00pm At 4.00 pm this evening, Sung Evensong is at Ormond Chapel, Napier Terrace. Mid-Winter Organ Recital Series This afternoon, Sunday 22 nd July, 2.30 pm Eugene Lavery (USA) St. Mary of Magdala Speculation has been fostered by the (poor) reputation of the town of Magdala and the common identification of Mary Magdalene with both the sinful woman (usually understood to be a prostitute) in Luke 7 who anointed the feet of Jesus, and with Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha. This accounts for the usual representation of Mary Magdalene in Western art as a penitent sinner, or as a contemplative, or both. However neither identification is at all probable. Luke does not name the woman who anointed Jesus feet, yet names Mary almost incidentally in a different context soon after, and Bethany (just outside Jerusalem) is miles from Magdala in Galilee. Mary followed and financially supported Jesus cause. She was present at the crucifixion and went to the tomb with spices, later reporting the empty tomb to the unbelieving disciples. In John s Gospel Mary is even more prominent in these events, running to fetch Peter and another disciple, then mistaking the risen Christ for the gardener. Mary becomes the first witness who can say I have seen the Lord. Her involvement with the ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus, on the criteria of Acts 1:21-22 would make her the equal of the apostles. For All The Saints (adapted) EJP Tip: Instead of binning those wine bottle caps, save them up and give to People s Warden Alison Thomson who passes them on for recycling for charitable purposes 2
Today s Order of Service am This morning s service follows the Eucharistic Liturgy Thanksgiving of the People of God commencing on page 404 in the red New Zealand Anglican Prayer Book; the tunes for most hymns may be found in Common Praise, the blue hymn book in the pews; the congregation remain seated while the choir sing an Introit from the back of the Cathedral, then stand to sing the Processional Hymn. Love that formed and named us, filled this clay with breath; Love that seeks and claims us, Love beyond all death; come now and fire the life that flows from you; Love that raised up Jesus, raise us up anew. 3. Song of joy and wonder, sound so wild and free; voice of wind and thunder, boundless as the sea; Music of God, the love that casts out fear; Song that sang in Jesus, sing within us here. 4. God of all creation, form our hearts anew; God of our salvation lead us home to you; Spirit inspire our hearts to hear your call; Living God of Jesus, come renew us all! 4 Sentence: Jesus said to Mary Magdalene, Go to my friends and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. John 20:17 Collect (for Social Services Sunday): God of creation, you are revealed in the morning song of Tui, Bellbird and Magpie, and in the golden waves reflecting the setting sun; you surround us daily. Open our eyes to delight in your presence, and activate our hands into caring as you do for all you have made, that your kingdom may come, and your will be done. Through Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, one God, now and forever. Amen. Reading: Song of Solomon 3:1-4 Gloria Robertshawe NZPB page: 246 Psalm 42: 1-10 The Choir Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-17 Robin Gwynn Gradual Hymn: Woman weeping in the garden Tune: LOVE DIVINE 1. Woman, weeping in the garden, who has pushed the stone aside? Who has taken Jesus' body; Jesus Christ, the crucified? 2. Woman, waiting in the garden, after men have come and gone; after angels give their witness, silently you watch the dawn. 3. Woman, walking in the garden, Jesus takes you by surprise; when the gardener call you, "Mary!" faith and joy meet in your eyes. 4. Woman weeping in the garden, weeping for joy, for you have seen Jesus, the Messiah, risen; Christ, of whom the prophets dream. 5. Woman, dancing from the garden, find the others and proclaim Christ is risen as he promised; tell the world he knew your name! Daniel Charles Damon Gospel Reading: John 20: 1-2, Rev d Dorothy Brooker The Sermon: Rev d Dorothy Brooker 4
NZPB page: 410 The Affirmation of Faith / The Nicene Creed may be said here. NZPB page: 413 The Prayers of the People Led by Ian Granger NZPB page: 419 The Peace The Presider We greet the people near us, saying Peace be with you / Kia tau te rangimarie. During the next hymn the bread and wine, symbols of Christ s life, are brought to the altar; our offerings of money to support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral are collected and brought forward also. Offertory Hymn: A prophet-woman broke a jar 1. A prophet-woman broke a jar by Love s divine appointing. With rare perfume she filled the room, presiding and anointing. Tune: DOMINUS REGIT ME Though woman-wisdom, woman-truth for centuries were hidden, unsung, unwritten, and unheard, derided and forbidden, A prophet-woman broke a jar, the sneers of scorn defying. With rare perfume she filled the room, preparing Christ for dying. A faithful woman left a tomb with resurrection gospel. She saw, she heard, she preached the word, apostle to apostles. the Spirit s breath, the Spirit s fire, on free and slave descending, can tumble our dividing walls, our shame and sadness mending. The Spirit knows, the Spirit calls, by Love s divine ordaining, the friends we need, to serve and lead, their powers and gifts unchaining. Brian Wren (selected verses) NZPB page: NZPB page: 424 NZPB page: 489 The Preparation of the Gifts & The Great Thanksgiving The Lord s Prayer The Invitation The Choir sing the Agnus Dei whilst the communion assistants receive communion; then the Choir move to the altar rails to receive communion; then all are welcome to share the bread and wine of Christ s life, or to receive a blessing - please come to the altar rails via the centre aisle and return to your seats via the side aisles (or use the ramp if necessary and take a place at the rear altar rail). Please advise an usher if you need to have communion served in your seat. During communion, the Choir will sing the anthem: All things bright and beautiful (Rutter) 5
NZPB page: The Blessing: Prayer after communion The Presider We share notices and news Closing Hymn: The risen Christ Tune: WOODLANDS The risen Christ, who walks on wounded feet from garden tomb through darkened city street, unlocks the door of grief, despair, and fear, and speaks a work of peace to all who hear. The risen Christ, who stands with wounded side, breathes out his Spirit on them to abide whose faith still wavers, who dare not believe; new grace, new strength, new purpose they receive. The risen Christ, who breaks with wounded hand the bread for those who fail to understand, reveals himself, despite their lingering tears, enflames their hearts, then quickly disappears. May we, Christ s body, walk and serve and stand with those oppressed in this and every land, till all are blessed and can a blessing be, restored in Christ to true humanity. Nigel Weaver The Dismissal: Go now to love and serve the Lord. Go in peace. Amen. We go in the name of Christ. Organ Voluntary follows Hymns reproduced with permission under CCLI Licence #
WEST PAPUA BOOK LAUNCH Thursday 26 July, 5.30pm in Century Theatre foyer Museum, Theatre Gallery (MTG), Napier Following on from the visit of Rev. Socratez Yoman from West Papua in 2016, which was hosted by the Cathedral Environment Justice and Peace Network, we invite you to the book launch with the author Maire Leadbeater - See No Evil; NZ s Betrayal of the People of West Papua Sunday 5 August is observed as Peace Sunday (nearest to August 6, the bombing of Hiroshima, in 1945.) EJP will meet on August 12, continuing the Peace theme with a workshop at pm led by Liz Remmerswaal. All parishioners are welcome to attend. Blessing of equal marriages following General Synod this year Bishop Andrew has replied to the Cathedral parish s letter to him and his letter is available to read in full (See noticeboard). He writes, in part: I have received the letter sent to me by you with the support of the parish Wardens, Vestry, Clergy and many parishioners. I appreciate the proactive approach of the parish to indicate to me the support for the blessing of same-sex couples that have entered into a Civil Marriage or Civil Union. I am happy to support your request to make it known that such blessings would be available at the Cathedral.... Online registration now available at: More information on the Wellington Interfaith Facebook page, or wtginterfaithcouncil@gmail.com A warm thank-you to all Cathedral people who have given time and care to supporting the Diocesan ordination service yesterday: music and song; catering; welcoming and many servant ministry tasks from willing hearts and hands.
