3 Sentence: I am the good shepherd, says the Lord. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10: 11 Collect: Good shepherd of the sheep, by whom the lost are sought and guided into the fold; feed us and we shall be satisfied, heal us and we shall be whole, and lead us that we may be with you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, where you reign one God for ever. Amen Acts 2: They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Psalm 23 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; 3 he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff - they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the Today s Readings 3 6 presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long. 1 Peter 2: For it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering un justly. 20 If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God s approval. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. 23 When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. John 10: Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 They will not follow a stranger, but they

4 will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers. 6 Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So again Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. GOSPEL COMMENT For a long time now scholars have noticed that the Fourth Gospel Jesus story incorporates a series of I am statements, and that these appear at critical moments in the drama. A simple way to understand these statements is that these are critical insights into all that we need to know of God, revealed and embodied in the life and action and teaching of the Word, Jesus. Therefore the I am gate aspect of God that Jesus reveals in this moment is a critical aspect of God. Gates invite - liberal theology is keen to emphasize this aspect of the life and teaching of Jesus. Gates also divide - conservative theology is keen to emphasize this aspect of the life and teaching of Jesus. We emphasize one at the cost of the other at great peril. Jesus invites us into the heart of God, yes. Is he though, just mister Nice Guy, inviting everyone? What of the Boko Harem terrorists or the sex slavery traffickers of whom I write elsewhere in this newsletter? Does Jesus simply yell come on dudes, join the party? Or is there no party - in which case the tragedy of 270 stolen Nigerian lives is bigger than the hope of God? Jesus says some harsh words. Our response should be to look at ourselves: are we with the thief who comes to pillage (often voicing support by our complacency and silence)? Or the life-giving, justiceproclaiming, crucifixion-inviting Shepherd? THE CREED AND CROSSED FINGERS? GOD MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH Scientific proofs or disproofs of the existence of God are to me an overwhelming yawn. God can be known only by revelation, not investigation. By revelation an investigation may point us towards belief in God, but God, not our finite mind, makes the connection. Nevertheless, the scientific determination to disprove the existence of God does have a few more hoops to jump through than its proponents care to admit. For a Big Bang to happen some form of energy must be introduced to some form of matter. For a single uncreated God to exist there only needs to be a single uncreated God, willing existence into being. Speculation will not lead us to the God of the Cross. It may lead us to the clockmaker God beloved of the nineteenth century. This god winds up the universe and sets it on the shelf to tick away, and away, and away to nothingness. Language of Architect of the Universe points to a partial truth, but only partial: the architect of the universe needs to draw a lot nearer to creation than most architects do to their creations, if we the creatures are going to respond in love, worship and service. There will be more thought of that in the second paragraph of the Creed. In the meantime, though, the creeds have a God who intrudes on God-space by making a universe: maker of heaven and earth. Why would God want to do that? Was God bored, all alone, existing, existing, existing, Grand Architect and no more? Were we created as no more than a play-thing for a bored deity? Slowly the rest of the creed may offer some tentative answers. But there is yet one subclause of the first paragraph to consider. 4

5 From Your Dean Like most westerners, it was with painful lethargy that I became aware or the abduction of more than 270 Nigerian school girls. A quick check of my Facebook page reveals that the horror dawned on my consciousness only last Monday. One New Zealand media chain as late as Tuesday was paying far more attention to Dan Carter s achilles than to 270 missing girls. The girls were kidnapped on April 14 th but media were at that time still obsessed with the missing Flight MH 370. That focus is of course understandable: MH 370 is a major tragedy. Yet the subsequent loss of interest in that story, too, tells us much about how our media and our mind works. Lost plane? For a while mystery is obsession, and we care, perhaps even pray. After two weeks? Meh. Eventually the radical terrorist group Boko Harem (which translates No Western Education ) claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, with little question of the truth of their claims. Boko Harem has been attacking Western and Christian targets since 2009, although it existed for seven years before that. In the period the group is likely to have been responsible for 900 deaths, including the slaughter of many Christians at worship. The executions also include execution of Muslims opposed to or critical of their interpretations. Commentators have often noted the extent to which African tragedies sink without a trace African lives approximately = one local life in western media coverage. Today, as I write this, the story of an American woman who was lost in a car wreck for five days in Colorado, and the sexual peccadilloes of Warriors player Konrad Hurrell are given far more prominence in the Fairfax Stuff media 5 than the Nigerian tragedy. There are signs though that at last the West/North is responding. Barrack Obama and David Cameron have made statements about the kidnapping (though eight or ten more students disappeared today). I have not heard much from John Key, though his government did declare Boko Harem to be an officially acknowledged terrorist group two weeks before the kidnapping. It is highly probable that the girls will be sold as sex slaves. That sex slavery exists at all will come as a shock to many in our comfortable western existence, though the horrors of this trade and the sexual exploitation of children for pornography lie only just beneath the veneers of our western civilization, and we should not be surprised. One may well ask Boko Harem about the ethics of selling girls for sex when opposed to western sexual standards, but I m guessing they won t be answering my questions right now. Because in the end Boko Harem, Al Qaeda, or any other global south terrorist group is not about ethics: until there is a commitment by the global north (which, er, incudes the South) to a radical redistribution of wealth and opportunity, groups like Boko Haram and Al Qaeda will utilize radicalized religion (Islam, for now...) to wreak mayhem in revenge for economic imbalance. This means hankywringing liberals (like me) may have to demand a distinct reduction in lifestyle and luxury (like not having umpteen electronic devices per person per household and cafés that throw out more food each night than many whole villages eat in a week/month.) But I won't hold my breath - because to be honest I don't know what to do, how to go about it either.
