2 P a g e 2 Beloved Church! A little over a year ago, Tracyton joined in a year-long collaboration with Brownsville, sharing my time and payroll expenses in a ¾ - ¼ arrangement. In some ways, the year worked out really well for Tracyton: we managed to keep up with expenses without a year-end crisis time; there was, for a while, a new vitality in joining in a single Sunday morning worship service with more people in the sanctuary; we could get acquainted with members from the other service. There were also drawbacks: Our total involvement, including worship attendance, was less than it had been when we held two services. Children s education hour suffered. Now that we ve gone through the summer again on our own, there are a couple adjustments we re making. One is financial and we re seeking some second-mile (second smile ) contributions from those who can give. But also: some of us -- maybe you? are just not getting to worship as easily as you used to, and worship time is one of the elements in that. So it s time to look into making a change. We don t think we re ready to move back to two full worship services, but we do want to maximize people s participation in worship. So it s time to ask you again: What s the best time of worship for you and your household? What times CAN you attend? The questionnaire will come to you in several forms: a box (in this newsletter!) that you can fill in and return; a separate that you can fill in and return; an online poll and a Sunday morning bulletin insert. 4 Corrected finance page P a g e 4 TUMC Steps Up We ve barely begun and already we re almost at the halfway mark to reach our budget-balancing end-of-year funding goal! The picture shows what we ve physically received so far. There are some additional pledges totaling another $1,600, so our actual remaining goal amount is just $3,225! You may have been in church when we announced this fund drive, or you may have received a message or a letter. The story is this: When we yoked with Brownsville UMC to share pastoral expenses last year, our hope was that we would be able to set aside some money to use for program and upkeep. Instead, giving fell by nearly the amount we received from Brownsville. That amount was $8,500 for a six-month period. We ve asked everyone to dig deep not just into your pocketbooks, but dig deep into your head and your heart to think of ways you can support the ministry of Tracyton UMC. Join a committee. Chair a committee! Work on a fundraiser. Come to Sunday School. Teach Sunday School! Join a work party. Join UMW. Participate in a mission project (like Benedict House!). Come to church and bring your friends! Maybe you don t have extra cash to share, but your very presence here is an inspiration. Thank you, Tracyton, for stepping up to this challenge, and for keeping your church in prayer and support for its ongoing mission in this community. 5 P a g e 5 Recipes Wanted Dig out that old family file of recipes and bring us one or two maybe even three. We think it is time for a new Tracyton United Methodist Cookbook. Add a story about a time the dish was served, or who in the family liked it most, a picture of yourself or the family member or friend who gave you the recipe would be great as well. Let s add some history and fun to go along with the sharing of food and hospitality. If you are interested in helping to put this cookbook together please let Lyla know. Better things happen when more people are involved. The Gleaning Table is open It is our sincere hope that everyone will participate by either bringing in items of plenty or by leaving a donation for something that you have found on the table that you can use or enjoy. 6 P a g e 6 On the first Friday of the month we serve dinner to the youth of coffee Oasis. Sometimes this is the only hot meal these kids get all week. Here at TUMC we designate the first Sunday of the month as Food Bank Sunday we gladly except donations anytime. Your donations help keep our community healthy! We try to keep it simple and affordable. We welcome any input you may have. If you would like to help purchase supplies or fix the meal, we meet at the church at 3:00pm. Please mark any financial donations Coffee Oasis We here at Tracyton UMC provide a week of meals for the men at Benedict House This year we can do this in different ways. You can donate funds to help others who would like to prepare and serve the meal, or your can purchase items for someone else to prepare. Or as tradition has it prepare and serve the meal at the shelter. 7 P a g e Church Conference Tracyton UMC s Church Conference (the congregation s annual meeting) will be held on Sunday afternoon, October 29, at 3:00 p.m. Rev. Cara Scriven will preside. All members of the church are voting members of the Church Conference. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee will meet beforehand with Rev. Scriven, at 2:00 p.m. BREMERTON BACKPACK BRIGADE Did you know it's 68 lo-o-o-ng hours between the free lunch the children we serve receive at school on Friday, until the breakfast they will receive at school Monday morning? That's an agonizingly long time for any child to be hungry or to worry about if or when their next meal is coming! The Brigade exists to address that reality. Here are three easy ways you can help! 1) Donate nonperishable food through your place of worship, The Habitat store, on Wheaton Way, or any Bremerton elementary school. The Brigade sends out over 1200lbs of food EVERY WEEK! Every can of chicken or box of Helper meal helps!! 2) Donate dollars to the Bremerton Backpack Brigade through Tracyton UMC or send a check to the Brigade's Post Office box (P.O. Box 2533, Bremerton WA 98310). The Brigade budgets $700 a week to purchase shelf stable milk, and fresh fruits and vegetables to include in each backpack. Your dollars make that possible. 3) Volunteer! The Brigade needs help to pack and deliver backpacks of food. They need more shoppers and vegetable packers. They need the expertise of fund raisers, grant writers and event planners. Volunteers are needed to pick up donated food from the various drop off locations and gather the returned backpacks from each school, each week. And the list goes on! Simply contact the Brigade through the link on their website to be welcomed into team: "No more hungry kids!" EACH AND EVERY DONATION AND/OR VOLUNTEER HOUR MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILDS LIFE! There s make and take crafts and of course there will be a story or two, and maybe even some yummy treats. Thursday October 5th! Be sure to come join in the fun!
