3 NINETEENTH SNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Seek First the Kingdom of God LWML SNDAY October 4, 2015 Get to KNOW The God who KNOWs NEWton I am the Good Shepherd I KNOW my sheep And my sheep KNOW me, just as The Father KNOWs me and I KNOW the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:14-15) WELCOME AND ANNONCEMENTS CONFESSION AND ABSOLTION P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 2:18 25 Then the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him. So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds 4

5 of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed, A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE READING Hebrews 2:1 13 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Now it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere, What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet. Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of 5

6 their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise. And again, I will put my trust in him. C Glory to You, O Lord. Pharisees came up and in order to test [Jesus] asked, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? He answered them, What did Moses command you? They said, Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away. And Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. And he said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery. And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a 6

11 Announcements BILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES : October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Pay attention to signs of domestic violence among your friends, including bruises, isolation, and having to ask permission to do things or go places. Also know that women are at greatest risk of being killed by their violent partner when they file for divorce, obtain a protection order or take other steps to end the relationship. Here s how to help someone you know who is in a dangerous relationship: let them know you care, help them make an appointment with an LFS counselor and give them the number of the Iowa Domestic Violence Hotline with: Lutheran Family Service of Iowa Aurora Ave., Suite 401W, rbandale, IA ( ) LWML SNDAY Today is LWML Sunday. LWML is Lutheran Women in Mission, who are In the Word, of the Word, and Walking with the Lord. The National LWML is currently supporting 19 new Mission Grants for a total of $1,418, for the years. Your MITES are helping to support these grants. LWML also supports the needy here in the SA and around the world by providing quilts, clothing, health kits, school supplies and many other projects A sincere Thank You to all of you for your continued support of the LWML Faith Society meets the third Monday of the month at 6:30 P.M. VOTER S MEETING The Voter s Meeting Tues., Oct. 20 at 7:30pm. Please have in all of your reports by Tuesday, October 6th. FALL CLEAN P As the leaves begin to turn and crispness returns to the air, it is again time to gather for cleanup of our Church building and grounds. The Trustees are asking you to join them on Saturday, October 24, 2015, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Lunch will be provided and anyone willing and able to continue working afterward will be welcomed. Cleanup will be both inside and outside (weather permitting), so there will be something for everyone! Thank you in advance for your assistance. CHOIR REHEARSALS beginning WED, OCT 7, at 7:00 pm. ALL ages and talents are welcome to join us as we begin working on a new Christmas cantata! 11

12 Proposed Declaration of Marriage Policy of Our Savior Lutheran Church At the October 20th Voter s Meeting, voters will consider a motion to add the following to the By-Laws of Our Savior Lutheran Church: nder By-Laws, add Article X Marriage Policy of Our Savior Lutheran Church: The marriage policy of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Newton, Iowa, a member congregation of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, is and always has been consistent with the Synod s beliefs on marriage. We believe that marriage is a sacred union of one man and one woman (Gen. 2:24-25), and that God gave marriage as a picture of the relationship between Christ and His bride the Church (Eph. 5:32). The official position of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, as set forth in 1998 Res ( To Affirm the Sanctity of Marriage and to Reject Same- Sex nions ), is that homosexual unions come under categorical prohibition in the Old and New Testaments (Lev. 18:22, 24; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; 1 Tim. 1:9-10) as contrary to the Creator s design (Rom. 1:26-27). These positions and beliefs can be found on the LCMS website, along with other statements, papers and reports on the subject of homosexuality and same-sex civil unions and marriage. Our pastors will not officiate over any marriages inconsistent with these beliefs, and our church property may not be used for any marriage ceremony, reception or other activity that would be inconsistent with our beliefs and this policy. All voting members and those wishing to become voting members are urged to attend this meeting, Tuesday Oct. 20, 2015 at 7:30 pm. 12
