The Resurrection of Our Lord He is Risen! The Wound of Death is Vanquished April 20, 2014 AS WE GATHER Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Today we will see this event through the eyes of someone close to our Lord---Mary Magdalene. As she approached the tomb that first Easter, Mary was fearful as she wondered who would help in rolling the stone away. Mary s eyes were filled with tears as she wondered where someone had moved the body of her Rabbi and Lord. Mary s tears of sorrow gave way to tears of joy as she heard Jesus say, Mary. Once she saw her Lord, she couldn t wait to tell the others what she had seen. As we come together to celebrate Jesus resurrection, we have gathered outside of the sanctuary following the ancient custom of the Church which for 2,000 years has gathered at the entrance of Christ s tomb at Easter sunrise to celebrate His resurrection. We enter a sanctuary darkened by the shadow of death, but the Light of Life quickly bursts forth the Good News of Jesus THE CHOIR: Mercy Tree Words and Music by Michael Neale and Kristen L. Nordhoff Arranged by Daniel Semsen OPENING DIALOG P Alleluia! Christ is risen! Alleluia! C He is risen indeed! Alleluia! P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P The stone has been rolled away! Alleluia! C The crucified One is risen! Alleluia! P He has conquered death by the cross! C He has come out of the tomb! P This is the day the LORD has made! C Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Psalm 118:24 NIV P Give thanks to the LORD for He is good! C His love endures forever! Psalm 118:1 NIV P All glory, laud, and honor belong to You, O Lord, Alleluia! C We worship, praise, and adore You, O Christ. Alleluia! VICTORY OVER SIN P Christ is risen! Alleluia! C He is risen indeed! Alleluia! P Even in our Easter joy, we confess before our gracious God our failings and sin. C Lord God, we acknowledge and confess that we have sinned and that our lives are not always what they should be. Our sin 3
leads to guilt that destroys our joy. Our self-centeredness leaves us feeling empty and alone, without the peace of Your presence. Forgive us, Lord, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. (A time of silent confession) P People of God, the Christ who died for you is risen. His death and resurrection have conquered our enemies of sin and death. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen! Alleluia! Amen! INTROIT Exodus 15:2a, 6, 13, 17-18; Antiphon: Ex.15:1b P I will sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea. C The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation; P Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, C Your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy. P You have led in Your steadfast love the people whom You have redeemed; C You have guided them by Your strength to Your holy abode. P You will bring them in and plant them on Your own mountain, C the place, O LORD, which You have made for Your abode, the sanctuary, O LORD, which Your hands have established. P The LORD will reign forever and ever. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. P I will sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously; C the horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea. COLLECT OF THE DAY P Let us pray. Almighty God, through Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, You overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life. We humbly pray that we may live before You in righteousness and purity forever; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. EASTER HYMN OF PRAISE Awake My Heart, with Gladness LSB 467 Stz. 1-2, & 6 OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 25:6 9 (God Will Swallow p Death Forever) On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain 4
the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. \ P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia! EASTER HYMN OF PRAISE Jesus Christ Is Risen Today LSB 457 Stz. 1 EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (Paul writes to God s people in Corinth about the difference our resurrected Lord made in his life.) Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. P The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia! EASTER HYMN OF PRAISE Jesus Christ Is Risen Today LSB 457 Stz. 2 HOLY GOSPEL John 20:1-18 (The Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus) P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 20th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away 5
from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned and said to him in Aramaic, Rabboni! (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. EASTER HYMN OF PRAISE Jesus Christ Is Risen Today LSB 457 Stz. 3-4 CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Christ Has Arisen, Alleluia LSB 466 Stz. 1-5 SERMON By Pastor John Moore Death s Death THE CATECHESIS OF THE FAITH P The Apostle Paul writes concerning the resurrection of Christ, If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:17b 6
Let us then confess our faith in Jesus Christ, who has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20 C I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own, and live under Him in His kingdom, and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, even as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. OFFERING OR GIFTS TO OR RISEN LORD AND SAVIOR (Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Romans 8:35, 37 NIV) OFFERTORY HYMN Thanks to Thee, O Christ, Victorious LSB 548 Stz. 1-3 INVITATION TO THE MEAL P The LORD GOD is my strength and my song; C and He has become my salvation. Isaiah 12:4 P Thanks and praise to You, heavenly Father, for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; for He is the very Paschal Lamb, who was offered for us and has taken away the sins of the world. By His death, He has destroyed death, and by His rising to life again, He has restored us to everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your holy name, singing: SANCTS P. 161 WORDS OF INSTITTION PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, 7
Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: LORD S PRAYER P Christ is risen! Alleluia! C He is risen indeed! Alleluia! DISTRIBTION HYMNS Alleluia! Jesus Is Risen LSB 474 At the Lamb s High Feast We Sing LSB 633 I Know That My Redeemer Lives! LSB 461 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P This is the day the LORD has made; C let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 NIV P Let us pray... We give thanks to You, almighty Lord, our refuge and our strength, for by the cross You have delivered us and by Your resurrection victory, honor and eternal blessings have been secured for all who call on Your name. We praise You for this gift of Your body and blood in this Sacrament. Strengthen us to boldly proclaim with our mouth that You are Lord as we love and serve You and our neighbors; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. C Amen. BENEDICTION P Alleluia! The Lord is risen indeed. C He is risen indeed! Alleluia! P The Lord will keep you from all harm---he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:7-8 C Alleluia! Amen. P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C Amen.
