3 GOOD FRIDAY The Sounds of the Passion: Pounding Hammer March 30, 2018 Service Notes: You may leave your offering as you enter or as you depart. You may pick up a nail as you enter or as you depart. As you leave, place and leave the nail it in the cross. God says to you, I want your sins left on the cross. You are to have forgiveness and life. An Explanation of the Tenebrae Order of Worship Good Friday is not observed as a funeral for Christ; it is a day for repentance over sin, and restrained joy and praise for the redemption Christ accomplished for us on the cross. The word Tenebrae means darkness. The purpose of the service is to impress upon us the terrible reality of sin, which caused our Savior to die for us. The name comes from the memorable ceremony in which all the light in the church are gradually extinguished casting ever-deepening shadows over the entire place. Candles are also extinguished in coordination with Scripture readings declaring that sin results in ever growing darkness. The lessons, together with the symbolic ceremony of extinguishing the lights, express the spirit of the Church in this time of penitence. The central light, the Christ Candle will not be extinguished, but will be carried from sight. The removal and return of this candle symbolize the death and resurrection of Christ. A loud noise ( strepitus ) occurs after the Christ candle is removed. This noise has various interpretations. These include the earthquake at the moment of Christ s death or the closing of the tomb. Upon completion of the service the congregation will kindly leave silently, not a word being spoken, so as to maintain the spirit of the worship just completed. The pastor will not be at the door for the usual greeting. 3

4 Prayer Upon Entering Church Almighty God, graciously behold this Your family for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and delivered into the hands of sinful men to suffer death upon the cross; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen. THE ORDER OF WORSHIP (Please Stand) INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Help us so to remember and give thanks for our Lord s passion that we may receive forgiveness of sin and redemption from everlasting death; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. THE DARKNESS OF MISUNDERSTANDING The Words in the Temple Mark 11:15-18; John 10:28-36 Narrator: On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, 5

6 Jesus: Is it not written: `My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it `a den of robbers. Narrator: The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.... Then a voice came from heaven,....the crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. Jesus said, Jesus: This voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself. Narrator: He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. The crowd spoke up, Congregation: We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, `The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this `Son of Man? Narrator: Then Jesus told them, Jesus: You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light. THE DARKNESS OF REJECTION The Words Before Pilate Luke 23:13-24 Narrator: Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them, Pilate: You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish him and then release him. Narrator: With one voice they cried out, Congregation: Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us! Narrator: (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.) Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. But they kept shouting, Congregation: Crucify him! Crucify him! Narrator: For the third time he spoke to them: 8

9 Pilate: Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him. Narrator: But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, Congregation: Crucify him! Crucify him! Narrator: and their shouts prevailed. So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 10 THE SILENT MEDITATION All lights in the Nave are extinguished. The Christ Candle is carried from sight. The loud clap symbolizes the earthquake which took place at Jesus death. At the reappearance of the Christ Candle the congregation will rise for: LORD S PRAYER (whispered by all) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. No Benediction is pronounced as a spirit of ongoing worship and devotion is proper. The Holy Week story continues on Sunday with Easter Worship celebrating our Lord s Resurrection. THE SILENT PRAYER (The congregation will depart in silence) We implore You, O Lord, that Your abundant blessing may be upon Your people who have held the passion and death of Your Son in devout remembrance, that we may receive Your pardon and the gift of Your comfort, and may increase in faith and take hold of eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Please leave your nail (sins) in the cross outside the sanctuary as you leave.
