C Amen P Jesus, Bright Star of Bethlehem, light of creation, C Shine now and enlighten the whole world! P Jesus, Bright Star of Bethlehem, light of hope, C Shine now and heal hopeless hearts! P Jesus, Bright Star of Bethlehem, light of unity, C Shine now and gather us all as one! P Jesus, Bright Star of Bethlehem, light of joy, C Shine now and bring your gladness! OPENING HYMN The People that in Darkness Sat Lobt Gott, Ihr Christen CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P Advent Lord, C Because of our sin, we too often live in hopelessness. We get caught up in the brokenness, heartache and pain of this current world. Lead us to see how you brought hope into our hopelessness when you brought light into our darkness. Shine your bright star of hope into our lives and make us new by your grace. Amen. P Hear the Good News: Jesus Christ is the light of the world. He is the Bright Star of Bethlehem. When he was born to save us he shattered the darkness of our sin, bringing hope to the world. Now you can live in this sure and certain hope: All of your sins are forgiven through Christ! C Amen. We remember that Jesus brought hope into our world, even when things seemed hopeless. (The first candle of the wreath is lit.) P At the dawn of creation, God said, Let there be light! 4 PRAYER OF THE DAY OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 9:1-2, 6-7 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. NEW TESTAMENT READING Romans 15:8-13 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name. And again it is said, Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him. And again Isaiah says, The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. GOSPEL READING Matthew 12:15-21 Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: Be-hold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope. 8 Announcements BILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES As you prepare for the celebration of Jesus birth, please remember those who are struggling. LFS is here to help as an extension of our church s ministry to those in need. As of March, $26,000 had been raised. These funds are being used to support and prepare for the upcoming National LWML Convention, which will be held in Des Moines in June of CARDS/NAPKINS We now have a new supply of greeting cards. In addition to these cards we also have boxes of Christmas cards and napkins Just place your money in the envelope, located on the card rack in the narthex, and place it in the collection plate. These sales will help support many of the mission projects sponsored by your LWML Faith Society. Thank you. LEND A HELPING HAND On Wednesday, December 18th, 6:00 p.m., at the American Legion Hall they will be packaging food for the St. Nicks Christmas Club. A sign up sheet has been posted in the narthex if you would like to help with this project. Thank You. LWML Faith Society LWML FAITH SOCIETY There will be no LWML meeting Monday, December 16th, instead we will be packaging food for the St. Nicks Christmas Club on Wednesday December 18th, 6:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. PHILIPPINES TYPHOON RELIEF Go to to learn more about donating funds. Your gifts for Disaster Response provide a constant resource of funds that can instantly be made available to help those in need. FOOD PANTRY We are collecting food items for the local food pantry. These 3 items are particulary needed year round: Ramen noodles, tuna and macaroni & cheese. ASK AND YO SHALL RECEIVE What a blessing OSL members are to the St. Nicks Christmas Club. I would like to inform you that we have received over $3000. We will be helping over 40 kids this year. That s a record for us! Many thanks for donations received, prayers that were said, elves that are helping with the shopping including Elf Gail for her bargain shopping. Well Done OSL. THE LOVE OF GOD AT CHRISTMAS next Sunday, December 15 at 9:00 am with fellowship following the service.
