For our Christ the King Parish Family The Definition of Advent The word advent (the arrival of an important person or thing) is derived from the Latin word adventus, which means coming. For Catholics, Advent is the four-week season leading up to Christmas. During Advent we anticipate the coming of Jesus. It s a time full of reflection, excitement, and hope. Advent begins next Sunday, December 2nd. Are you ready?
3 THE YEAR OF LUKE PART TWO OF FOUR SALVATION HISTORY Luke s conviction about the important role of Israel leads him to write his Gospel in a way unique from all the other evangelists. Luke is the Gospel-writer who presents us with the Good News of Jesus Christ in the form of salvation-history, and he links it to the end of time. He frequently quotes scripture from the Old Testament to show how the history of ancient Israel, as revealed in the Old Testament, leads up to Jesus Christ. History has evolved according to God s plan and finds its fulfillment in Jesus. In Luke s Gospel, it follows that Jesus is preoccupied with Jerusalem as the city of his destiny. In his final goodbye, The Great Commission, Jesus tells his disciples to preach forgiveness of sins in his name beginning from Jerusalem. SALVATION AND SAVIOR Luke announces that Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One of God, and he proclaims, unapologetically, that only Jesus can save human beings for eternal life with God. This becomes the mission given to all of Jesus s followers: to give witness that only Jesus can save us from our sins. Luke speaks about salvation more than any other Gospel writer, and casts Jesus with the title of Savior (Matthew and Mark do not). God has delivered his people through Jesus. As such, he writes about Jesus in the past tense (unlike Mark, who writes in the present tense). The phrase Paschal mystery is a shorthand expression for the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the Church views these as one event, not separate ones, so highlighting one aspect over another isn t heresy. For Matthew, Mark and John, Christ s death on the cross is our moment of salvation. But for Luke, our moment of salvation is the Resurrection from the dead of Jesus, where death is conquered and Christ is glorified. But Luke doesn t downplay the passion and death of Christ. None of the other Gospel writers can top where Luke quotes Jesus assuring the repentant thief hanging next to him, This day you will be with me in Paradise. That certainly affirms the saving act of Christ s death! God s plan of salvation is realized and achieved in the activity of Jesus, and the effects of that salvation continue to be available to every human being thereafter. Jesus defeats evil in all its forms: physical, mental or satanic. THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Another unique quality of Luke s Gospel is its emphasis on the role of the Holy Spirit s guidance throughout salvation-history: in the history of Israel, in Jesus s own life (earthly and risen) and ministry, and in the life of the Church (remember that St. Luke also wrote The Acts of the Apostles together, these Books comprise a quarter of the New Testament). The Holy Spirit will be the form of Christ s presence among his disciples after his final leave-taking; they will no longer behold him in bodily form. The Spirit is the active, creative and prophetic presence of God, the personified relationship between the Father and Christ. The Spirit becomes God s presence to his people anew, the guiding force of Christian disciples and witnesses. The Christian community is Spirit-guided. The Spirit is given to the People of God as a whole. Fr. John OCTOBER 2018 YTD FINANCIAL SUMMARY CATEGORY ACTUAL BUDGETED Collection Income $129,660 $132,352 Other Income $45,714 $42,036 TOTAL Income $175,374 $174,388 LESS: Expenses $173,668 $176,022 BALANCE $ 1,706 (-$1,634) Analysis: We had lower collection income than we projected, but higher other income, so we came ahead of our budgeted projection for total income. Likewise we were able to control expenses better than we anticipated, so we came out better than the budgeted projection. We expected to be slightly in the red by this time of year, but wound up in the black instead. I pray that the spirit of stewardship will seize everyone, where we give not because of our needs but because we need to give, so that our collection income will equal or exceed our expenses. Then we can get ahead and allocate our other income for the major expenses that lie ahead for the 62 year old buildings here. Otherwise a capital campaign will be necessary, but that s the next Pastor s problem. Fr. John O. CTK COMMUNION MINISTERS! Nov Blessing of Communion Ministers and the Commissioning and Re-Commissioning of Communion Ministers at each Mass REMAINING TRAINING FOR: ALTAR SERVERS Please plan on meeting in the front of church after Mass for a short training session on December 1/2. Next week: Dec. 1-2 Altar Server Training
4 The Giving Tree Advent Parish Project As a community of believers, we invite you to spend the coming Advent season actively awaiting the birth of Christ; look for Him in the face of the poor. Please consider participating in our annual Giving Tree project. We will be gathering gifts for El Centro del Quinto Sol Recreation Center. A tree will be in the Narthex the weekend of December 1/2 with tags available for boys and girls, ages 8 to 12 years old. Suggested gift amount is $ Please take a gift tag and return the gift with the tag attached securely to the wrapped gift and place it under the Giving Tree by December 9th or bring your gift to the parish office by December 11th. Thank you for your generosity and for helping make a child smile this Christmas. The weeks leading up to Christmas are filled with holiday songs, seasonal sales, decorations, lights, and sometimes Advent wreaths and candles. Why? What is it that we re celebrating? What is Advent? Each year the Catholic Church gives us an incredible opportunity for a powerful encounter with Jesus. In her genius, the Church invites us during Advent to take a step back and look at who we are, what we are doing, and where Jesus fits into our lives. Jesus came into this world at that first Christmas for you, to bring meaning and deep satisfaction into your life, to fill you with lasting joy, and ultimately to bring you to eternal happiness with him in heaven. That s what we celebrate at Christmas. Are you ready? We prepare for everything we consider important in life. In every case preparation makes a wonderful experience possible. When was the last time you prepared your heart for Christmas? Advent is a season of preparation. And if we want to experience the true magic and meaning of Christmas, we need to take a break from our to-do lists and get our hearts ready for Christmas. Sign up today to have the Best Advent Ever!
5 Please take home your Altarcito photos today. Those not picked up this weekend will be available at the Parish Office on Monday. We will also give you a reminder call on Tuesday. Thank you for participating in this special remembrance of our loved ones. Healing Hearts Monday, December 3rd Grief is a process that each person experiences uniquely in his or her own way. The cost will be $ Please call Betty Mestas at to reserve your spot by December 13th. Grief is a necessary process that helps an individual adjust to a loss. Grief is not a lack of faith. Grief is a normal reaction to the loss of a significant someone or something in your life. Unfortunately, there are no written scripts for how to grieve or for how long to grieve. This group encompasses many different types of loss and grief -- caregiver support, death of loved one, divorce, empty nest, pain and emotional wounds. The group will meet twice a month on 1 st and 3 rd Mondays of the month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Sr. Joan s Room in the Little Flower Formation Center. Their next gathering will take place on Monday, December 3rd, You are invited to join us at any time. Dedicated parishioners, Christi Kurtz and Cindy Kramer will facilitate the group. Contact Christi for more information at Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
