1 February 19, 2017 Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. Victor Hugo The enriching power of music touches us in all aspects of our lives. In a recent documentary (Alive Inside), patients in nursing homes and mental health facilities who were catatonic or severely disabled were called out of the abyss by listening to the music which made them feel young again the tunes that were popular when the participants were in their heyday. The patients, who were in fragile states, both mentally and physically, moved, danced, walked, sang, and were engaged with the world around them during the time that they were listening to the music their particular playlist. So, I ve been asking the choir this question: What s on your playlist? It occurs to me that we at St. Mary s have a particular subset playlist. The music that we use in worship is designed for praise and reflection. We all have our favorites and these choices are reflected from our iphone playlists all the way to when we plan our weddings and funerals. 2 Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God s gifts and shares these gifts of love of God and neighbor. Our GOAL is to fund our operations entirely through the Sunday Collection using gifts, bequests, fundraising to build our reserves for our capital needs maintaining our buildings and grounds. 3 Proposed Parking Garage and Residential units, Main and Lyndon Los Gatos is truly a great place to live and work. With a legendary history, Los Gatos town featured its own train station that gave access to the Santa Cruz Mountains and coastline. Remnants of a bygone era are everywhere, and these remind us of the many changes that have occurred from one generation to the next. The 20th century brought about further infrastructural changes to the roads, bridges, and waterways. These improvements allowed engineers to create a bypass that made it possible for travelers on Highway 17 to avoid the surface roads of Los Gatos. Before that time, long time residents recall how they as a pastime would line up on N. Santa Cruz Ave. to watch the traffic go through town. If it sounds like history is repeating itself, it is. The city of Los Gatos is becoming increasingly congested as evidenced by the multiple cars backup on N. SC Ave. due to traffic as result of the road conditions on Highway 17. If that were not enough, in the next few years, the cement roads in the Almond Grove District the neighborhood surrounding St. Mary Parish will be replaced with new cement. Please know that we will give you timely information regarding the status of this roadwork as it may impact access to the parish. All of us will need to make our best efforts to remain calm especially as the spring and summer approach. But traffic in town is not the only issue. Our principal James Johnston published the following in his weekly address. This development will impact our community, and we do well to stay informed so that we may voice our concerns. Here s what he wrote: The Town of Los Gatos is working with a developer to possibly build a multi-story parking garage combined with 6 low rent and 18 market rent residential housing units in the lot on the corner of Main and Lyndon Avenue, adjacent to St. Mary School. While recognizing the need for more parking in the Downtown area, here are some concerns: 1. The structure could overlook the younger children s playground. 2. There could be an increased number of strangers living next to the school. 3. Increased traffic in this already highly congested area. 4. The scale of the project might not fit in with the character of the neighborhood. We encourage all members of the St. Mary School and Parish community to become involved by giving your feedback to the Town on this project. We thank you deeply for all of your support over the last almost TEN YEARS! As you may remember, our parish sends two groups per year to visit our South American friends. Our Spring Trip is in Quito now! The money raised at this event will benefit the homeless in our valley. St. Mary s Church donates these proceeds to Village House, the ministry housing the homeless for our diocese. Understanding Mary through literature and imagery February 21, :00-8:30 p.m. in Hofmann Center, by Cynthia Rostankowski, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Department of Humanities San José State University and a St. Mary Parishioner. We have come to know Mary, mother of Jesus, as a role model, spiritual guide, confidante, advocate, and more. She has been revered by Christians with honorific titles such as new Eve, Mother of the Church, and Blessed Virgin for millennia, but what can we discover about the historical Mary? The scriptural Mary? The theological Mary? As we pursue her from these perspectives, we will discover many ways of Understanding Mary. Temporary Liturgical Adaptations During the 2017 Flu/Cold Season The Public Health Office of Santa Clara County has requested that the Diocese make a number of temporary adaptations to our celebrations of the Eucharist, so as to foster the health of our worshipping communities and also of the wider community. The following adaptations are now in effect temporarily. Holy Communion will not be shared under the form of Consecrated Wine. Those who wish to receive Holy Communion on the tongue are asked to receive Communion last. People should not hold hands during the recitation of the Lord s Prayer. The Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not involve shaking hands or touching. The obligation to participate in Sunday Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill. March 20, 2017: 7:00-8:30pm Howley Hall A Story of Courage in the Holocaust. This fundraiser will continue until February 28, and all money collected will directly benefit our local chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Student Council is hoping to raise $500 - good luck!! Producer of Queen of Katwe visits with 7th and 8th Grade students Producer John B. Carls joined the St. Mary School 7th & 8th grade students for a discussion about his feature film, Disney s Queen of Katwe. The students had watched the film in religion class to explore the story s references to social justice issues and the social and cultural implications of a life spent in poverty in Uganda. The lessons of perseverance, grit, integrity, and the importance of family (blood relation or otherwise) resonated well with our students and is in full alignment with the gospel message. Mr. Carls is uncle to 7th grade student, Henry Laurencio.
