3 Dear Sisters and Brothers: More times than most priests would like to admit, we are called to a local hospital in order to administer the last rites to a dying parishioner. As you can imagine, these are always humbling moments for a priest and very important moments for the sick person and his/her family. Unfortunately, in some instances, the priest is not at home, traveling and thus unavailable and unable to get to the patient s bedside to give him/her their last Sacrament. In many cases, the patient has been sick for a long while and unfortunately at the hour of their death it was not possible for a priest to be there. These situations are sad but usually preventable. I take this opportunity to provide a little refresher so that we may all know and be better prepared to celebrate this important Sacrament with our loved ones as they prepare to meet the Lord face to face. In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, (formerly known as Last Rites) through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin and sometimes even from a physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. The Sacrament can and should be received as soon as possible after a serious diagnosis even while still at home. * SUNDAY REFLECTIONS * When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. In these days of less and less priests and a greater burden on the schedules of all of us, I reaffirm my commitment to making the Sacraments available to all our people, especially our elderly. To be successful in that regard, we ask families of those who are sick and infirm not to wait until the last minute to request that we come to administer the Sacrament of the Sick, because unfortunately, sometimes, given all that may be going on, we are not always present or available on call. Let s work together to be sure that we plan for these important Sacramental moments in the lives of our loved ones, so that they may receive their Last Sacrament in a timely and dignified manner. In the name of Him, the Divine Healer, Peace and blessings, Fr. Leo

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13 11AM IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH NORWOOD, NJ ICC Will Hold the BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS On Sunday, Oct. 7th, 1:30 PM In Front of the Church So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. (GENESIS 2:19) The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, since the start, God has put the entire world into our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the beginning of mankind, it isn t something recently invented by the Church. Just as past generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations.
