2 2 The Eucharist Welcome to Ely Cathedral this morning. Everyone is very welcome for refreshments after the service near the main door to the Cathedral. Communicant members of all Christian denominations are welcome to receive Communion at this service. The ministry of healing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you. There is an Induction Loop in both the North and South Transepts, the Choir and the Presbytery, for those using a hearing aid, and large copies of the service sheet are available on request. Photography or video recording are not permitted at this service. Please keep your mobile phones switched off throughout the service. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Please sit READING Acts ,21-end In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred and twenty people). He said, Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us throughout the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. This is the Gospel of the Lord. 8 SERMON Please sit After the Sermon silence is kept Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. THE NICENE CREED For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; Please stand

9 he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 12 It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, almighty and eternal Father, and in these days of Easter to celebrate with joyful hearts the memory of your wonderful works. For by the mystery of his passion Jesus Christ, your risen Son, has conquered the powers of death and hell and restored in men and women the image of your glory. He has placed them once more in paradise and opened to them the gate of life eternal. And so, in the joy of this Passover, earth and heaven resound with gladness, while angels and archangels and the powers of all creation sing for ever the hymn of your glory: The choir sings Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. 12 Please sit or kneel We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.

13 Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Great is the mystery of faith. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. 14 14 THE LORD S PRAYER President Rejoicing in God s new creation, let us pray with confidence. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The president breaks the consecrated bread, saying Every time we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The president invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Communion. All who are not communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by bringing this service sheet with you. Gluten free wafers are available on request. At the distribution the minister says to each communicant: The body of Christ or The blood of Christ The communicant responds Amen, and then receives.

THE RIGHT REVEREND DAVID THOMSON has announced his retirement as Bishop of Huntingdon. There will be a service of farewell on Sunday 23 September at 4pm to which everyone is very warmly invited. 19 ORGAN RECITAL Theme and Variations Everyone is warmly invited to an organ recital on Thursday 17 May :30pm - 8:45pm by Sarah MacDonald. The programme will be of Variations for Organ, including works by J.S. Bach, César Franck and George Thalben-Ball. Admission is free. CATHEDRAL MU GARDEN PARTY on Thursday 7 June at Bishop Woodford House, Barton Road. From 2-4pm. Entrance fee 1. Following our successful afternoon at Barton Road last year, when we raised money for holidays for families under stress and the MU Summer of Hope, we are having a repeat performance! Mary Finney is collecting books for the Book Stall. Please contact her on and she will collect from you. Sally Rowland is having a plant stall. Please leave plants at 14 Lynn Road or at Bishop Woodford House after 12 noon on the day. Angela Jones and Penny Hall have a scarf stall. Any craft items to be given to Hazel Brown who will also be raffling the quilt made by the Stitching Group. There are Cards and Candles made by Bev Sweet. Teas will be available and charged separately by the Retreat Centre. All are welcome and remember to bring your shopping bag for all your shopping! CATHEDRAL TOUR FUND In aid of the Cathedral tour fund, the Hatton family will be hosting an evening of sung madrigals by the fishing lake at Horsley Hale Farm. The event will run from 6:45pm -10pm on Saturday 9 June and will feature performances from Fen Edge Voices and Zephirus. A pair of tickets is and includes a cold supper hamper and bottle of wine or a non alcoholic alternative. There will be a pay bar selling additional drinks, including wine, beer, teas and coffees. The gardens at Horsley Hale Farm have been described as an Oasis in the Fens and are the perfect setting for a relaxed summer evening of open air music. Following our successful afternoon at Barton Road last year, when we raised money for holidays for families under stress and the MU Summer of Hope, we are having a repeat performance! Mary Finney is collecting books for the Book Stall. Please contact her on and she will collect from you. Sally Rowland is having a plant stall. Please leave plants at 14 Lynn Road or at Bishop Woodford House after 12 noon on the day. Angela Jones and Penny Hall have a scarf stall. Any craft items to be given to Hazel Brown who will also be raffling the quilt made by the Stitching Group. There are Cards and Candles made by Bev Sweet. Teas will be available and charged separately by the Retreat Centre. All are welcome and remember to bring your shopping bag for all your shopping!
