The Call to Penitence By the mercies of God, let us confess our sins and present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to him, which is our spiritual worship. Please sit Proclaiming and Receiving the Word The First Reading Isaiah 60: 1-6 A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah: Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall

4 cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Psalm Psalm 72: 1 7, Give the king thy judgements O God: and thy righteousness unto the king's son. Then shall he judge the people according unto right: and defend the poor. The mountains also shall bring peace: and the little hills righteousness unto the people. He shall keep the simple folk by their right: defend the children of the poor and punish the wrongdoer. They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endureth: from one generation to another. He shall come down like the rain upon the mown grass: even as the drops that water the earth. In his time shall the righteous flourish: yea and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. The kings of Tharsis and of the isles shall give presents: the kings of Arabia and Saba shall bring gifts. All kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall do him service. For he shall deliver the poor when he crieth: the needy also and him that hath no helper. He shall be favourable to the simple and needy: and shall preserve the souls of the poor. He shall deliver their souls from falsehood and wrong: and dear shall their blood be in his sight. He shall live, and unto him shall be given of the gold of Arabia: prayer shall be made for him continually, and daily shall they bless him. The Second Reading Ephesians 3: 1-12 A reading from Paul s letter to the Ephesians: This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God s grace that was given to me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow-heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God s grace that was given to me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that

5 through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Please stand for the Gospel Procession as the Acclamation is sung by the choir The Gospel Reading Matthew 2: 1-12 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St N. Response All turn to face the reader In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Response The Sermon The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. please stand We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified; who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

7 The Prayers of the People Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer Merciful Father, accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. All sit or kneel please stand The Peace The priest introduces the peace with these words Our Saviour Christ is the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end. Isaiah 9:6,7 The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Those present may offer one another a sign of peace. Celebrating at the Lord s Table Offertory Hymn O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Bow down before him, his glory proclaim; With gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness, Kneel and adore him, the Lord is his name! Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness, High on his heart he will bear it for thee, Comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness Of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine: Truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, These are the offerings to lay on his shrine. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, He will accept for the name that is dear; Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, Trust for our trembling and hope for our fear. 8 The Preparation of the Altar at the taking of the bread and wine the priest says Be present, be present, Lord Jesus Christ, our risen high priest; make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen. The Taking of the Bread and Wine the priest says Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us: therefore let us celebrate the feast. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. and also with you Lift up your hearts. we lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. it is right to give our thanks and praise. Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise: For Jesus Christ our Lord, who in human likeness revealed your glory, to bring us out of darkness, into the splendour of his light: And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: The choir sings Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Father, the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: All remain standing

9 he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. The choir sings and all repeat each line Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

10 The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated bread for communion and says The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Communion Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Please sit while the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. 12 Going Out as God s People Prayer after Communion Lord God, the bright splendour whom the nations seek: May we, who with the wise men have been drawn by your light, discern the glory of your presence in your incarnate Son; who suffered, died, and was buried, and who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. All say: May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

13 Postcommunion Hymn Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid! Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining, Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all. Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, Odours of Edom, and offerings divine, Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? Vainly we offer each ample oblation, Vainly with gifts would his favour secure; Richer by far is the heart's adoration, Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.
