THE PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Deacon President God our Father, your gift of water brings life and freshness to the earth; in baptism it is a sign of the washing away of our sins and the gift of life eternal. Sanctify this water, we pray. Renew the living spring of your life within us, that we may be free from sin and filled with your saving health; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The people are sprinkled during the Kyrie KYRIE sung by the choir Kyrie eleison Christe eleison Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy ABSOLUTION President May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS sung by the choir. Please remain standing Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus, bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe: Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis, qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus altissimus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ, O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us; thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us; thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art Holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only O Christ with the Holy Ghost art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 4
Let us pray. THE COLLECT O God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Please sit A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. FIRST READING Acts When the apostles had come together, they asked Jesus, Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel? He replied, It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5
HYMN Please stand 1 Be present, Spirit of the Lord, Let sounds of earth be dumb; The Father s love be shed abroad, The dew of blessing on us poured: O silent Spirit, come! O silent Spirit, come! 3 Love s sovereign work of grace fulfil, Our souls to Christ incline, Intent to do the Father s will And stand by faith before him still In righteousness divine, In righteousness divine. 2 In power unseen upon us rest, Your gracious gifts impart: A mind renewed, a spirit blessed, A life where Christ is manifest, An understanding heart, An understanding heart. 4 O spirit come, and with us stay; Make every heart your home. So work in us that we who pray May walk with Christ in wisdom s way: O Holy Spirit, come! O Holy Spirit, come! Words: SP 89 Timothy Dudley-Smith b Music: Repton NEH 353 C. Hubert H. Parry from a song in his oratorio Judith A reading from the first letter of Peter. SECOND READING Please sit 1 Peter ; Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please stand and face the deacon Choir All Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. Alleluia, Alleluia. GOSPEL John The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus looked up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Choir All Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia. SERMON After the Sermon silence is kept 7
Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. THE NICENE CREED On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please stand 8
THE INTERCESSION President In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ let us pray to the Father. Please kneel. These responses may be used Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. And at the end THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT THE PEACE Please stand President The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, Peace be with you. Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. The peace is shared. 9
THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE OFFERTORY HYMN The altar is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. During this hymn an offering is received. If you pay tax in the UK, please place your offering in the envelope, remembering to include the details requested on the front of the envelope. Thank you Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation; O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation: Come ye who hear, Brothers and sisters draw near, Praise him in glad adoration. Praise to the Lord, who o er all things so wondrously reigneth, Shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth: Hast thou not seen All that is needful hath been Granted in what he ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee; Ponder anew All the Almighty can do, He who with love doth befriend thee. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath come now with praises before him! Let the Amen Sound from his people again: Gladly for ay we adore him. Words: German, Joachim Neander Tr Catherine Winkworth and others Music: Lobe den Herren NEH 440 Melody to Hast du denn, Liebster in 17 th German Collections. Set to Neander s Lobe den Herren (Ps 103) in The Chorale Book for England Descant by Alexander Brent Smith
The gifts of the congregation and Junior Church are received. The president takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. In your loving care you spread before us the table of life and give us the cup of salvation to drink. Keep us always in the fold of our Saviour and our Shepherd, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Blessed be God for ever. THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. For he is our great high priest who has entered once for all into the heavenly sanctuary, evermore to pour upon your Church the grace and comfort of your Holy Spirit. He is the one who has gone before us, who calls us to be united in prayer as were his disciples in the upper room while they awaited his promised gift, the life-giving Spirit of Pentecost. Therefore all creation yearns with eager longing as angels and archangels sing the endless hymn of praise: 11
The choir sings Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Please remain standing We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Deacon Great is the mystery of faith. 12
Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. THE LORD S PRAYER Please kneel President Rejoicing in God s new creation, let us pray with confidence. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 13 THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The president breaks the consecrated bread, saying Every time we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The president invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

OCTAGON FURNISHINGS One of the projects in the Masterplan is to renew the altar furnishings, and those who have attended briefings about the Masterplan will be aware that through the generosity of the bequest from the late Bishop and Mrs Walker we have been able to pursue this. Chapter appointed Luke Hughes as the designer, and on 5/6 June we are looking forward to a mockup of the platform and altar being in place for several weeks so that we can use it and decide whether we have the size and proportions correct. It will also be an opportunity for the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England to visit and give their opinion. At this stage the mock-up will only be of the platform and altar, but in the overall scheme the choir stalls, lectern, kneelers, and clergy stalls will all be part of the scheme. This a very exciting project, and since worship is at the heart of what we re about one of the priorities of the Masterplan. PENTECOST ALL-AGE SERVICE Our Pentecost all-age service is on Sunday 4 June at 10.30am - a less formal Eucharist with congregational singing of rounds, to recall the multiple voices of the Spirit s praise at Pentecost. We will invoke the Spirit in the words Come, Holy Spirit, hear and ponder the events of the first Pentecost, light a candle to recall our baptismal promises and to mark the indwelling of spiritual fire in our selves and our lives. All are very welcome. PENTECOST PRAISE This year s service takes place on Sunday 4 June. It will start at the new time of 7pm and will be led by the Bishop of Huntingdon.
