God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity! 3 Words: Reginald Heber Music: Nicaea NEH 146, J.B. Dykes

THE GREETING Bishop In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you. The Bishop welcomes the people and introduces the liturgy THE PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Deacon Holy, holy, holy. When our eyes have seen the Lord of hosts, we echo the words of Isaiah, Woe is me! I am doomed. We long for the fire of God s cleansing to touch our unclean lips, for our iniquity to be removed and our sins wiped out. So we meet Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with confession on our lips. Please sit or kneel Silence is kept Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. ABSOLUTION Bishop May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. 4

Please stand GLORIA IN EXCELSIS sung by the choir Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ, O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art Holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only O Christ with the Holy Ghost art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Please sit A reading from the Book of the prophet Isaiah. FIRST READING Isaiah In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. 5

The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me! For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN Please stand Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all life thou givest - to both great and small; In all life thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish but nought changeth thee. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; All laud we would render; O help us to see Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. Words: W. Chalmers Smith Music: St. Denio NEH 377, Adapted from a Welsh song set to a hymn in John Roberts s Caniadau y Cyssegre

Please sit SECOND READING Romans Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand and face the deacon GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Choir All All Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Now he is living, the Christ. Out of the tomb he is risen; he has conquered death, opened heaven to all believers. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. 7

The Lord be with you. And also with you. GOSPEL John Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. 8

SERMON Please sit After the Sermon silence is kept THE NICENE CREED Please stand Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9

THE INTERCESSIONS Bishop In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ let us pray to the Father. Please sit or kneel We come boldly to the throne of grace, praying to the almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for mercy and grace. We plead before your throne in heaven. Father of heaven, whose love profound a ransom for our souls has found: We pray for the world, created by your love, for its nations and governments Extend to them your peace, pardoning love, mercy and grace. We plead before your throne in heaven. Almighty Son, incarnate Word, our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord: We pray for the Church, created for your glory, for its ministry to reflect those works of yours Extend to us your salvation, growth, mercy and grace. We plead before your throne in heaven. Eternal Spirit, by whose breath the soul is raised from sin and death: We pray for families and individuals, created in your image, for the lonely, the bereaved, the sick and the dying Breathe on them the breath of life and bring them to your mercy and grace. We plead before your throne in heaven. Thrice holy! Father, Spirit, Son, Mysterious Godhead, Three in One: We pray for ourselves, for your Church, for all whom we remember before you Bring us all to bow before your throne in heaven, to receive life and pardon, mercy and grace for all eternity, as we worship you, saying, Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Amen. 10

3 God the Son by Love begotten, Loved from all eternity, Life outpoured for our salvation, Through whom all was brought to be, Perfect image of the Father, God from God, and Light from Light, Healing through our human weakness, For sin s blindness giving sight. 4 Holy and life-giving Spirit, Bond of love, God s living Breath, Presence which the Church inherits, Raising us to life from death; Drawing us to deep communion, Kindling in our hearts desire - Longing prayer for perfect union, Tears of joy and tongues of fire! 5 Triune God we bring our praises, Low in adoration fall, Awesome Wonder that amazes As our hearts now hear your call, Share in me the life of glory, Lives transfigured by my Love! Saints on earth and saints in heaven, In the Trinity above. Words: Bishop Geoffrey Rowell Music: Hyfrydol NEH 271, Melody by Richard Huw Pritchard The gifts of the congregation and Junior Church are received. The Bishop takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. In your loving care you spread before us the table of life and give us the cup of salvation to drink. Keep us always in the fold of our Saviour and our Shepherd, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Blessed be God for ever. 12

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord. All that you reveal of your glory, the same we believe of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without any difference or inequality. We, your holy Church, acclaim you, Father of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. Three Persons we adore, one in being and equal in majesty. And so with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we sing for ever of your glory Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to Thee, O Lord most High. Amen. The choir sings Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Please sit or kneel 13

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, 14

through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. THE LORD S PRAYER Bishop Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, Because we all share in one bread. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Bishop breaks the consecrated bread, saying 15

THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The Bishop invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Bishop and people receive the Communion. Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive the Communion. All who are not communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by bringing this service sheet with you. Gluten free wafers are available on request. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. AGNUS DEI 16

Your gentleness, O God of grace, Has touched my wounded, fearful soul, Your hands engraved with nails of love Embrace my heart and make me whole. The perfect love which casts out fear Is blazoned on your cross of life. There weakness shows the power of God, There glory flames midst pain and strife. MOTET Your risen life, Ascended Lord, Dispels the darkness of death s night, Your spirit, poured into my heart, Irradiates my soul with light. In broken bread and wine outpoured The meaning of my life is giv n, The sacrifice of love for me, God s Living Bread comes down from heav n. All praise and thanks, my Lord and God For this, your greatest gift to me: Your very self to be my food, The love-feast of eternity. Amen. Words: Bishop Geoffrey Rowell Music: Paul Mealor b Please stand PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Bishop Let us pray. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. A moment of silence is kept 17

THE BLESSING Bishop The Lord bless you and keep you. Amen. The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. Amen. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen. The Lord God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the holy and undivided Trinity, guard you, save you, and bring you to that heavenly city, where he lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. RECESSIONAL HYMN During the singing of the hymn, the servers, choir and the robed ministers move to the West. Please turn to face them as we are sent to live out our Christian faith in the world. 1 Affirm anew the threefold Name Of Father, Spirit, Son, Our God whose saving acts proclaim A world s salvation won. In him alone we live and move And breath and being find, The wayward children of his love Who cares for humankind. 2 Declare in all the earth his grace, To every heart his call, The living Lord of time and place Whose love embraces all. So shall his endless praise be sung, His teaching truly heard, And every culture, every tongue, Receive his timeless word. 18

Unhappily, I must advise you that the Principal Contractor on the project, Heritage Building and Conservation Ltd (HB&CL), has advised us that, following a period of cashflow difficulties, their situation is untenable. What this means is that they have decided to put the company into administration. As far as the Cathedral s affairs are concerned, Chapter s cash situation remains robust and it has paid all the bills it has received to date on this contract. The problem we are now facing is that it will need to sort out new arrangements to get the work completed and to ensure that the specialist contractors are fully remunerated. Fortunately, we have not incurred any losses, but there will inevitably be some additional costs involved in completing the project. Canon Stephen Bourne, Cathedral Administrator & Chapter Clerk. NOTICES FOR THE SERVICE SHEET are due by 9am on Tuesdays. Please send all future notice requests to notices@elycathedral.org. MEN S BREAKFAST The next men s breakfast will be held in the Cathedral Centre on Saturday 9 June at 8.45am for 9am until 10am. Vicki Roulinson will be talking about the restoration project at Zanzibar Cathedral. Members of the congregation and friends are warmly invited. THE CONGREGATIONAL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING takes place on Sunday 3 June at 12noon. All are very welcome. The Annual Review for 2017 is available now. 20
