2 Welcome to Chichester Cathedral This booklet contains all you will need to follow the Cathedral Eucharist. Please take it home to aid your daily devotions. The booklet includes suggestions about posture, but it is important that individuals feel comfortable. This booklet is also available in a format with larger print. Please ask the stewards if you would like a copy. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer at the communion, please indicate this to one of the stewards before the Service. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use this, please switch your hearing aid to t. A collection will be taken in the hymn after The Peace. Many regular, even if infrequent, members of the congregation give by standing order. This helps the Cathedral to budget. If you would like to know more about this method of giving please see the information on the Pew Sheet. 5 Prayers of Penitence The people are invited to call to mind and confess their sins: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5: Read by Michael Baker The love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 8

10 Gospel Reading When the Gospel is announced, the reader says The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. John 20: 1-2, Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to him in Hebrew, Rabbouni! (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord ; and she told them that he had said these things to her. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 10

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 11

12 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 13 The Peace Please stand. God is love and those who live in love live in God and God lives in them. The peace of the Lord be always with you. and also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace. All remain standing to sing the offertory hymn: Hymn God, we praise you, God, we bless you! God, we name you sovereign Lord! Mighty King whom angels worship, Father, by your Church adored: all creation shows your glory, heaven and earth draw near your throne, singing, Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts, and God alone! 13

14 True apostles, faithful prophets, saints who set their world ablaze, martyrs, once unknown, unheeded, join one growing song of praise, while your Church on earth confesses one majestic Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, God, our hope eternally. Jesus Christ, the King of glory, everlasting Son of God, humble was your virgin mother, hard the lonely path you trod. By your cross is sin defeated, hell confronted face to face, heaven opened to believers, sinners justified by grace. Christ, at God s right hand victorious, you will judge the world you made; Lord, in mercy help your servants for whose freedom you have paid. 15 The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you All and al - so with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right and good, our duty and our salvation, to praise you, the all-powerful Father, in every season, and on this holy day to celebrate the glory of your saints. In Mary Magdalene you kindled a fire of love for Christ, whose word had set her free. You gave her the courage of love to follow him even to the cross. Seeking her teacher after his death, so great was her longing that you made her the first to behold him risen from the dead, and the first to announce to the apostles his new and glorious risen life. Her words still ring throughout your Church, to strengthen faith and encourage hope in those who gather faithfully for prayer. And so with her, and all the citizens of heaven, we join our voices to acclaim your glory in this their joyful hymn of praise: 15

The Eucharistic Prayer continues: Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 16

17 Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All 17

18 Please stand or sit. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The president breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. 18

19 Giving of Communion The president invites the people to communion: Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The president and people receive communion. Members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive communion if they wish. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, please come to the altar rail with everybody else and bow your head.
