THE GATHERING When the bell rings, please stand INTROIT sung by the choir in the Presbytery Holy is the true light and passing wonderful, lending radiance to them that endured in the heat of the conflict. From Christ they inherit a home of unfading splendour, wherein they rejoice with gladness evermore. Alleluia! Words: from the Salisbury Diurnal by G.H. Palmer Music: William Henry Harris The choir move to the Octagon stalls while the organ plays PROCESSIONAL HYMN 1 Christ is our corner-stone, On him alone we build; With his true saints alone The courts of heaven are filled: On his great love Our hopes we place Of present grace And joys above. 2 O then with hymns of praise These hallowed courts shall ring; Our voices we will raise The Three in One to sing; And thus proclaim In joyful song, Both loud and long, That glorious Name. 3 Here, gracious God, do thou For evermore draw nigh; Accept each faithful vow, And mark each suppliant sigh; In copious shower On all who pray Each holy day Thy blessings pour. 4 Here may we gain from heaven The grace which we implore; And may that grace, once given, Be with us evermore, Until that day When all the blest To endless rest Are called away. Words: Latin c 7th Century tr. John Chandler Music: Harewood A&M 608 S.S. Wesley

THE GREETING President In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you. The president welcomes the people and introduces the liturgy We run the race set before us, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Therefore let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which clings so closely, bringing them to Jesus in penitence and faith. THE PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Please sit or kneel. Silence is kept Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. President Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS sung by the choir Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe: Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis, qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus altissimus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. Almighty God, who built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the chief cornerstone: so join us together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen THE COLLECT Please sit 5

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Isaiah A reading from the Prophet Isaiah. Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem. Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement; when the overwhelming scourge passes through it will not come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter ; therefore thus says the Lord GOD, See, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: One who trusts will not panic. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN Please stand 1 Have faith in God, my heart, Trust and be unafraid; God will fulfil in every part Each promise he has made. 2 Have faith in God, my mind, Though oft your light burns low; God s mercy holds a wiser plan Than you can fully know. 3 Have faith in God, my soul, His cross for ever stands; And neither life nor death can pluck His children from his hands. 4 Lord Jesus, make me whole; Grant me no resting place, Until I rest, heart, mind, and soul, The captive of your grace. Words: Bryn Austin Rees Music: Doncaster CP 458 Melody by Samuel Wesley

SECOND READING Please sit Ephesians 2.19-end A reading from the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand and face the deacon GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Choir All All Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Remember the words of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; and build yourselves up on your most holy faith. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. GOSPEL John end The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. 7

Jesus said to his disciples: I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, Servants are not greater than their master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. It was to fulfil the word that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. This is the Gospel of the Lord. SERMON Please sit After the Sermon silence is kept THE NICENE CREED Please stand Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE INTERCESSION President In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ let us pray to the Father. Please sit or kneel These responses may be used Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. And at the end 9

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT THE PEACE Please stand President We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. The peace is shared. THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE OFFERTORY HYMN The altar is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. During this hymn an offering is received. If you pay tax in the UK, please place your offering in the envelope, remembering to include the details requested on the front of the envelope. Thank you 5 Lord, you bless with words assuring: I am with you to the end. Faith and hope and love restoring, May we serve as you intend, And, amid the cares that claim us, Hold in mind eternity; With the Spirit s gifts empower us For the work of ministry. 1 Thy hand, O God, has guided Thy flock, from age to age; The wondrous tale is written, Full clear, on every page; Our fathers owned thy goodness, And we their deeds record; And both of this bear witness: One Church, one Faith, one Lord. 2 Thy heralds brought glad tidings To greatest, as to least; They bade men rise, and hasten To share the great King s feast; And this was all their teaching, In every deed and word, To all alike proclaiming One Church, one Faith, one Lord. 10

3 Through many a day of darkness, Through many a scene of strife, The faithful few fought bravely To guard the nation s life. Their gospel of redemption, Sin pardoned, man restored, Was all in this enfolded, One Church, one Faith, one Lord. 4 And we, shall we be faithless? Shall hearts fail, hands hang down? Shall we evade the conflict, And cast away our crown? Not so: in God s deep counsels Some better thing is stored; We will maintain, unflinching, One church, one Faith, one Lord. 5 Thy mercy will not fail us, Nor leave thy work undone; With thy right hand to help us, The victory shall be won; And then, by men and angels; Thy name shall be adored, And this shall be their anthem, One Church, one Faith, one Lord. Words: Edward Plumptre Music: Thornbury NEH 485 Basil Harwood Organist of Ely Cathedral The gifts of the congregation and Junior Church are received. The President takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts Father, accept all we bring before you this day. Guide us with your love and feed us at your table as you nourish the faith of the Church by the preaching of your apostles. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER 11

It is indeed right and good that we should give you thanks, praise and glory, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. For after his resurrection he sent out his apostles and evangelists to preach the gospel to all nations and lead us in the way of truth. Himself the chief cornerstone, he founded his Church upon the apostles firmly to stand for ever as a sign of your holiness upon earth and a living witness to all of the way that leads to heaven. And so with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we lift our voices and join in their unending hymn of praise: The choir sings Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Please sit or kneel 12

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. 13

THE LORD S PRAYER President Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The President breaks the consecrated bread, saying We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, Because we all share in one bread. THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The President invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. The President and people receive the Communion. Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive the Communion. All who are not communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by bringing this service sheet with you. Gluten free wafers are available on request. 14

At the distribution the minister says to each communicant The body of Christ or The blood of Christ The communicant responds Amen, and then receives. During Communion the Choir will sing Agnus Dei from Missa Misericordiae Domini (Langlais) and the motet The Call (Vaughan Williams). MINISTRY OF HEALING The ministry of healing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis, Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis, Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. AGNUS DEI 1 Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: Such a way as gives us breath; Such a truth as ends all strife; Such a life as killeth death. MOTET 2 Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: Such a light as shows a feast; Such a feast as mends in length; Such a strength as makes his guest. 3 Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: Such a joy as none can move; Such a love as none can part; Such a heart as joys in love. Words: George Herbert Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Please stand President Let us pray. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. A moment of silence is kept THE DISMISSAL President God, who has prepared for you a city with eternal foundations, bring you, with all the saints, to the eternal and triumphant joy of that city; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. RECESSIONAL HYMN During the singing of the hymn, the servers, choir and the robed ministers move to the West. Please turn to face them as we are sent to live out our Christian faith in the world. Forth in the peace of Christ we go; Christ to the world with joy we bring; Christ in our minds, Christ on our lips, Christ in our hearts, the world s true King. King of our hearts, Christ makes us kings; Kingship with him his servants gain; With Christ, the Servant-Lord of all, Christ s world we serve to share Christ s reign. 16

Priests of the world, Christ sends us forth This world of time to consecrate, This world of sin by grace to heal, Christ s world in Christ to re-create. Christ s are our lips, his word we speak; Prophets are we whose deeds proclaim Christ s truth in love, that we may be Christ in the world, to spread Christ s name. We are the Church; Christ bids us show That in his Church all nations find Their hearth and home, where Christ restores True peace, true love, to all mankind.
