The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the fulfilment of the promise of Easter. Before he died, Jesus assured the disciples that the result of his death would be that they would be one as he and the Father were one; he would dwell in them as the Father dwelt in him. It is the Spirit that makes us one with God, and whatever else the experience of the disciples was on that first day of Pentecost, it included a profound sense of oneness with God in Christ. 2

THE GATHERING When the bell rings, please stand INTROIT sung by the choir in the Presbytery You will receive power, alleluia! when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Words: Acts 1.8 Music: Paul Trepte b The choir move to the Octagon stalls while the organ plays PROCESSIONAL HYMN 1 O thou who camest from above, The pure celestial fire to impart, Kindle a flame of sacred love On the mean altar of my heart. 3 Jesus, confirm my heart s desire To work, and speak, and think for thee; Still let me guard the holy fire, And still stir up thy gift in me. 2 There let it for thy glory burn With inextinguishable blaze, And trembling to its source return In humble prayer, and fervent praise. 4 Ready for all thy perfect will, My acts of faith and love repeat, Till death thy endless mercies seal, And make my sacrifice complete. Words: Charles Wesley Music: Hereford NEH 431 Samuel Sebastian Wesley

THE GREETING President In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. 4 The president introduces the liturgy Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord and we have walked with him through his journey of love. We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross. We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death. We have enjoyed his risen presence with us and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread. We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord. And now, with the followers of his own time, we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people, through whom we make Christ known to the world. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles Please sit THE PENTECOST READING Acts When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,

Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us. PRAYER FOR PERSONAL RENEWAL President Be with us, Spirit of God; Nothing can separate us from your love. Breathe on us, breath of God; fill us with your saving power. Speak in us, wisdom of God; bring strength, healing and peace. A moment of silence is kept. VENI CREATOR 1 Cantor Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire; Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart. 2 Thy blessed unction from above, Is comfort, life, and fire of love; Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight. 3 Anoint and cheer our soiled face With the abundance of thy grace: Keep far our foes, give peace at home; Where thou art guide no ill can come. 4 Teach us to know the Father, Son, And thee, of both, to be but one; That through the ages all along This may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Words: John Cosin Based on Veni, creator Spiritus Music: Veni Creator NEH 138 Mode viii

Let us bless the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit Let us praise and bless God for ever. Please stand GLORIA IN EXCELSIS is sung by the choir Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. THE COLLECT God, who as at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans READING Please sit Romans We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please stand and face the deacon Choir All Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL John ,16.4b-15 The Lord be with you And also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Jesus spoke to his disciples: When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, Where are you going? But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I still have 7

many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. 8 Please sit SERMON After the sermon a time of silence is kept. Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; THE NICENE CREED Please stand

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Please kneel We pray to God to fill us with his Spirit. Cantor Cantor Cantor Cantor Generous God, we thank you for the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen. Please stand THE PEACE President God has made us one in Christ. He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. The peace is shared. 10

THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE OFFERTORY HYMN The altar is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. During this hymn an offering is received. If you pay tax in the UK, please place your offering in the envelope, remembering to include the details requested on the front of the envelope. Thank you. 1 Be present, Spirit of the Lord, Let sounds of earth be dumb; The Father s love be shed abroad, The dew of blessing on us poured: O silent Spirit, come! O silent Spirit, come! 2 In power unseen upon us rest, Your gracious gifts impart: A mind renewed, a spirit blessed, A life where Christ is manifest, An understanding heart, An understanding heart. 3 Love s sovereign work of grace fulfil, Our souls to Christ incline, Intent to do the Father s will And stand by faith before him still In righteousness divine, In righteousness divine. 4 O spirit come, and with us stay; Make every heart your home. So work in us that we who pray May walk with Christ in wisdom s way: O Holy Spirit, come! O Holy Spirit, come! Words: SP 89 Timothy Dudley-Smith b Music: Repton NEH 353 Charles Hubert Hastings Parry from Judith The gifts of the congregation are received. The president takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts: Blessed be God, who feeds the hungry, who raises the poor, who fills our praise. Blessed be God for ever. 11

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, your only Son our Lord. This day we give you thanks because in fulfilment of your promise you pour out your Spirit upon us, filling us with your gifts, leading us into all truth, and uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith. Your Spirit gives us grace to call you Father, to proclaim your gospel to all nations and to serve you as a royal priesthood. Therefore we join our voices with angels and archangels, and with all those in whom the Spirit dwells, to proclaim the glory of your name, for ever praising you and singing; Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to Thee, O Lord most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. The choir sings Please sit or kneel Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine 12

may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper, he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. 13

Being made one by the power of the Spirit let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. THE LORD S PRAYER THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The president breaks the consecrated bread, saying THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The president invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Communion. All who are not communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by bringing this service sheet with you. Gluten free wafers are available on request. 14

At the distribution the minister says to each communicant: The body of Christ or The blood of Christ The communicant responds Amen, and then receives. During the Communion the choir will sing Agnus Dei from Collegium Regale (Howells) and the motet The Spirit of the Lord (Elgar). MINISTRY OF HEALING The ministry of healing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. AGNUS DEI MOTET The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor: he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind; To preach the acceptable year of the Lord; To give unto them that mourn a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel. Words: Isaiah 61 Music: Edward Elgar from The Apostles

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Please stand President Let us pray. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. BLESSING The president blesses the people, saying May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you the life he gives. Amen. May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful in the service of the Lord. Amen. May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ. Amen.
