2 The Eucharist Welcome to Ely Cathedral this morning. Everyone is very welcome for refreshments after the service near the main door to the Cathedral. Communicant members of all Christian denominations are welcome to receive Communion at this service. The ministry of healing is available this morning. If you would like prayer for yourself or someone else, please go to St Dunstan s Chapel, in the South Transept during the administration of Communion, where one of the clergy and a member of the Pastoral Team will be available to pray with you. There is an Induction Loop in both the North and South Transepts, the Choir and the Presbytery, for those using a hearing aid, and large copies of the service sheet are available on request. 4 THE GREETING President In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you. The President welcomes the people and introduces the liturgy THE PRAYERS OF PENITENCE God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God s commandments and to live in love and peace with all. Please sit or kneel. Silence is kept Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand. And the LORD said to me, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A plumb-line. Then the Lord said, See, I am setting a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against you in the very centre of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. Haynes SECOND READING Please sit Ephesians Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God s own people to the praise of his glory. Some were saying, John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him. But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. But when Herod heard of it, he said, John, whom I beheaded, has been raised. For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother s wife. And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it. And he solemnly swore to her, Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom. She went out and said to her mother, What should I ask for? She replied, The head of John the Baptist. 8

9 Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptizer on a platter. The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. This is the Gospel of the Lord. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 9 SERMON Please sit After the Sermon silence is kept THE NICENE CREED Please stand Let us confess our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.

10 He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE INTERCESSION President In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ let us pray to the Father. Please sit or kneel. 11 THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE OFFERTORY HYMN The altar is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. During this hymn an offering is received. 12 The gifts of the congregation and Junior Church are received. The President takes the Bread and the Cup and praises God for his gifts As the grain once scattered in the fields and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside are now united on this table in bread and wine, so, Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together from the corners of the earth into your kingdom. Amen. THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomb and scattered the darkness of death with light that will not fade. This day the risen Lord walks with your gathered people, unfolds for us your word, and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake this day you summon us to live in endless light, the never-ceasing sabbath of the Lord. And so, with choirs of angels and with all the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory and join their unending song of praise. 12

14 And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. THE LORD S PRAYER President Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. 15 THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The President breaks the consecrated bread, saying We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, Because we all share in one bread. THE GIVING OF COMMUNION The President invites the people to receive the Holy Communion, saying Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. The President and people receive the Communion. Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive the Communion. All who are not communicants are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you wish to receive a blessing, please indicate this by bringing this service sheet with you. Gluten free wafers are available on request. At the distribution the minister says to each communicant The body of Christ or The blood of Christ The communicant responds Amen, and then receives. During Communion the Choir will sing Agnus Dei from Missa Princeps Pacis (Lloyd Webber) and the motet The Glory of the Father (Egil Hovland). EVERY MAN REMEMBERED As part of the national Every Man Remembered campaign, pupils from the Isle of Ely and St Mary s Schools have been researching the stories of local men who died in World War One. Their work will be on display at the Ely Youth and WW1 Commemorations on Palace Green today (15th July). Between noon and 2.00 p.m. it will be brought into the cathedral and placed near St George s Chapel. Members of the congregation are warmly invited to come and read some of the children s stories after the service today. 18

19 CANON GARRARD Unfortunately Canon Garrard is signed off work. The Resident Cathedral clergy are covering the various precentorial responsibilities between them. We are very grateful to the Priest Vicars and the Pastoral Team for assisting with pastoral work. THE MOTHERS UNION BRANCH MEETING We don t meet in August so the next Branch Meeting will be on Wednesday 5th September when Dr Jasmine Allen, curator of the Stained Glass Museum, will tell us about the Museum. Everyone is welcome. THE ELY CATHEDRAL ROSE has been produced by award winning East Anglian rose growers, Peter Beales, who are specialist propagators of new blooms and have won many prestigious awards including 24 Gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where the rose was officially unveiled by celebrity garden designer, Diarmuid Gavin. The Ely Cathedral Rose is a subtly scented, repeat flowering shrub which produces a wonderful multi-headed display of ruffled blooms and was admired by Her Majesty The Queen when she attended RHS Chelsea in May. Price 25 and can be ordered online via the Ely Cathedral website - ROYAL BRITISH LEGION CONCERT ON SATURDAY, 21ST JULY Has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. Tickets purchased using a bank card will be refunded within the next few days, all other ticket holders will be contacted by a member of our box office team. An alternative date in 2019 is now being sort. Once details have been confirmed we will contact you prior to the tickets going on general release to rebook. Please accept our sincere apologies for the disappointment. CATHEDRAL COMMUNITY COFFEE MORNING Wednesdays between 10-11:30am in the Cathedral Centre. Everyone welcome. There will be no coffee mornings in August. EDWARD BEAR CLUB with worship time of praise, activity and stories, is held on Fridays, am, for under 5s, parents or carers. BROIDERS GROUP We are planning to establish a Broiders Group whose role will be to maintain the Cathedral s vestments, altar fronts and other textiles and also to work on new commissions. There will be a variety of projects for all levels of expertise. If you would like to find out more about this new group and see how you can become involved, come along and join us on Wednesday 25 July, 11am at the Cathedral Centre. They are: Angela Jones, Mary Benfield, Eileen Norton, Mary Rone, Sally Rowland, Joan Cameron, Pat Skelton, Eunice Reddish, John Buttifant and John Marshall. Pastoral care is also offered by our Priest Vicars who are: John Sansom, Bruce Curry, Michael Law, Alan Jesson, John Hall, Colin Travers, Chris Barber, Tim Thompson and Nicholas Thistlethwaite.
