1 BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH Pastor s Corner NEWARK, OHIO Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We woke up this Monday morning to surprising news. News that we have not heard in the Catholic Church for the past 598 years: the Pope had resigned. Throughout this past week I have shared my reaction to the news. I have tremendous peace that the Lord is our Shepherd and that there is nothing we shall want. Our hope is in the Lord. And, I have tremendous confidence in the judgment of Pope Benedict. He is fully committed to the mission of the Bishop of Rome, Successor of St. Peter and has judged that he is no longer capable of fulfilling this ministry. Finally, I am filled with great respect for our Holy Father. His decision to resign his office is a profound act of humility, courage, and faith. I have placed in this bulletin an editorial from the Vatican Newspaper, the L Osservatore Romano. Also, I have included the English translation of Pope Benedict s resignation speech that he offered to the College of Cardinals this past Monday. I am deeply moved by the faith of Our Holy Father and for how he is inviting us as a Pilgrim People of Faith to live more deeply by faith. I invite you to a special Holy Hour for Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday Evening, February 27th, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in our Church. During our Holy Hour we will thank God for the Pontificate of Pope Benedict, pray for him as well as pray for his successor. This will be the last evening of his Pontificate. His resignation is effective at 2:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, February 28th. God bless, Fr. Frequent droughts make it difficult to produce enough food for the entire year. Often, farmers can only grow enough to feed their families for seven months. The rest of the year is called the hungry season. This week we pray for families in Burkina Faso and give to CRS Rice Bowl to help small-scale farmers.

The letter presents the essential points of Catholic teaching on marriage as a natural gift, as a sacrament, and as a public commitment between a man and a woman. It also discusses several contemporary challenges to marriage and how the Church addresses those challenges. The letter states, While marriage is a special blessing for Christians because of the grace of Christ, marriage is also a natural blessing and gift for everyone in all times and cultures.
