Remember, if everyone waited for everyone else to answer the call for feeding the poor, no one would ever get fed. Therefore, we humbly ask that you please remember those who are less fortunate than we, as you come to church EACH and EVERY week. If you are not able to purchase or carry extra food to church, then you make a monetary donation to the Food Pantry. 4 A Tribute to Father Thomas L. Keenan The Reverend Father Thomas L. Keenan who was Pastor Emeritus of Saint Margaret Church, Rumford (where I celebrated every major holy and holiday for the first ten years of my Priesthood) died on Monday, September 4, 2017 at Memorial Hospital. Born March 14, 1938 in Providence, he was the son of the late Gilbert L. Roy and Mary- Ruth (Sweeney) Keenan. He lived his early years in East Providence. His education began at Sacred Heart Grammar School in East Providence where the Sisters of Mercy laid a foundation that would benefit him for life. He later graduated LaSalle Academy (Class of 1955) and Our Lady of Providence Seminary (Class of 1959-BA). That year, Bishop Russell J. McVinney sent him to the University of Louvain, Belgium where he completed his studies, obtaining an M.A. and was ordained to the Priesthood by John Cardinal Cody, Archbishop of Chicago on June 29, That summer he returned to Rhode Island. After a brief assignment at Saint Joseph Church in Central Falls, he became assistant pastor at Saint Peter & Paul Cathedral, also serving as moderator to the National Council of Catholic Women. From he taught religion and French at Saint Raphael Academy in Pawtucket. During those years, he also served as a part-time assistant pastor at Saint Edward Church in Pawtucket and at Saint Edward and Saint Thomas Churches, both in Providence. Appointed to Saint Charles Borromeo Church in Woonsocket as assistant pastor in 1971, he remained there four years, before going to Saint Mark Church in Garden City, Cranston until While at Saint Charles, he was administrator of Mount Saint Francis Day Care Center in Woonsocket and while at Saint Mark Church he was the administrator of Carter Day Nursery in Providence. While in these positions, he served on various special committees for the Catholic Charity Fund Appeal, in Woonsocket in particular and later in Providence. In February 1979, Father Keenan became pastor of Saint Joseph Church in Pascoag. While there he was dean of the Northern Rhode Island Deanery and undertook major renovations in the parish. In 1991, Bishop Louis Gelineau appointed him the pastor of Saint Margaret Church in Rumford from which he retired in 2006 with the title of Pastor Emeritus. Besides his clerical vocation, Father s avocations included: cooking, reading, travelling and attending theatrical performances and museums. He is survived by his sister and my dear friend Beautiful Kathleen M. (Keenan) Monahan; his nephew, Marc J. Monahan and his wife Erika (whom I preached at their wedding) and their son Calum (whom I baptized); his niece, Erin K. (Monahan) Hayes and her husband Charles P. (whom I preached at their wedding) and their sons David and Kevin. He was the uncle of the late Super David Monahan (whom I preached at his funeral). He was a long-time friend of the late Sister Elizabeth Gorman, SND. I shared with you this story of Father Tom s life because he was one of only a few priests that welcomed me to his parish with open arms and a great smile. For many years, I was truly dumbfounded, because Father Tom and I could not have been on more opposite pages of theology, philosophy or psychology and yet our friendship worked wonderfully. His dear friend Sister Elizabeth, whom I teased to no end, was yet another piece of the puzzle that did not make sense, but that relationship also worked wonderfully for many years. Father Tom had a deep and deliberate voice, one which I had down to a science and often used from the ambo and during homilies at his church. One day after Mass, a gentleman approached me and said You are the only person that I know who can get away with teasing Father and I have to admit, your impression of him is spot on. Tom was a gentle giant whose bark was truly worse than his bite. A stern appearance, but a gentle and fun loving soul (if he let you in). He loved the finer things in life and was so very proud of being the pastor of Saint Margaret Church where I first met him, Sister Elizabeth and Deacon John Needham. Deacon John truly went above and beyond the call of duty in helping Father Tom, not only on the altar, but with every other aspect of Father s life, especially the years after his retirement. Deacon John truly deserves a crown of glory for his dedication and selflessness that often went unrecognized and unfortunately, unappreciated. What I remember most about Father Tom is his friendship and his eagerness to have me present with him at Saint Margaret Church during Christmas, Holy Week, Easter and every other major holiday. Again, it made no sense that we would be friends, but it was a friendship and fraternal bond that I will never forget and always cherish. Father Tom was one of the very few priests in my priesthood that was not intimidated or jealous of my gifts and talents. He loved to share me with his parish and he knew I would always make them laugh, gently prod them to give more money and he would look like the hero for inviting me. I remember when I received my first full-time parish assignment in my former diocese, I could no longer travel to Rhode Island for the holydays. I remember the telephone call to Father Tom as if it were yesterday, he said What will I do now? Once again I teased him mercilessly with the saying I am EXHAUSTED. A phrase that he often used after a major holiday and would just cancel all Masses because Well, I just couldn t say another Mass, I am exhausted! Father I will always treasure the good times as I have forgotten the less than positive ones and I pray that you have found peace in that place where we all hope to meet again. May your gentle soul rest in peace. May God have mercy on you and welcome you home to be in peace in the heavenly kingdom where you will be exhausted no longer!

5 Thrift shop Saint Joseph Church s Thrift Shop is having a 1/2 price sale on all Household Items from now until Saturday, September 16 th. There are many wonderful items in the shop, especially a huge supply of winter clothing. All items are reasonably priced. Come in for a great shopping experience. Blood & platelet drive Summer is coming to a close and everyone is readying for the welcome routine that Fall brings. There is no season for donating blood. We hold our drives on the 3 rd Saturday of every month so that people are able to make that blood or platelet donation. Our upcoming drive is Saturday, September 16 th in the downstairs Community Room at Saint Kateri Church. Change of mass time After much prayerful consideration, consultation, deliberation and careful thinking, the present 6:00pm Mass on Sunday evenings will be Changed to 5:00pm Beginning Sunday, September 10 th. 9/11 memorial A ceremony remembering the 16 th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be held at Sussex County Community College in Newton on Monday, September 11 th at 9:00am on the Connor Green. The Sheriff s Honor Guard as well as area Police, Fire, EMS and First Responders will be in attendance. Local vocalists and bagpipers will also bring their talents to the remembrance ceremony. The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony is an annual event organized by members of the Sussex County PBA Local #138. Bishop Serratelli will be the main celebrant at Mass at The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Paterson on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 4:00pm. 6 Pizza night with bishop Any young woman in high school or college who might be interested in learning about religious life; you are cordially invited to join the sisters of the Diocese of Paterson and Bishop Serratelli join them for Adoration, reflection, fellowship and of course, pizza on Monday, September 25 th from 7:00-9:00pm at Pope John 23 rd High School, Sparta. For more information, please call the Delegate for Religious Office at: Ext Diocesan pilgrimage Next month the Diocese of Paterson will have the Tri-annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. This pilgrimage is part of a truly blessed year. It will take place on Saturday, October 21 st. As a diocese, we gather for prayer invoking Our Lady as an intercessor, seeking her help as the patroness of the Americas. During this important spiritual visit, the faithful will be offered time for prayer, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Sacrament of Confession and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist in a concelebrated Mass by the priests of the diocese who attend. There will also be an opportunity for the pilgrims to participate in the Catechetical talks being offered that day. The Diocesan Pilgrimage Office has also arranged for an overnight option for the faithful to attend the night before. Those participating in the two-day trip will go to the National Shrine of Saint Jude for prayer and Mass, and to the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is America s first Cathedral. Right to life Sunday, October 1 st is Right to Life Sunday. There will be a Life Chain at the Green in downtown Newton on the Circle sponsored by The National Life Chain of New Jersey from 2:00-3:30pm which will include prayer and peaceful demonstration.
