4 Father Michael J. Burke, S.T.M., J.D. The Reverend Father Michael J. Burke, S.T.M., J.D. (Master of Sacred Theology and Juris Doctor Degree, civil attorney). Father Michael was born on November 12, 1950, ordained on May 15, 1976 by the laying on of hands of Bishop Lawrence B. Casey (the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Paterson) and entered into eternal glory on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 5:35am at Saint Vincent Healthcare and Rehab Center in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. The Parish Communities of Saint Joseph Church and Saint Brendan Church in Clifton as well as the Diocese of Paterson, all mourn the loss of this unique, gifted, humorous, loquacious and generous priest. I have known Father Michael for my entire priesthood as I first met him when I was part of the Eastern Catholic Church. Father Michael was intrigued with the Eastern Church (especially the vestments) and after our first meeting, we instantly became friends. He was actually present at the installation of the first bishop of my former diocese at Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Union City (over twenty-five years ago) where I served as the Master of Ceremonies as a transitional deacon. Throughout the years I know that Father Michael was exceptionally instrumental in helping hundreds of seminarians and priests get the proper documentation and visas to enter the United States all FREE of charge. Father often told me he felt it was his particular mission to help those in need in this particular area of their lives. Father Michael first came to assist me at weekend Masses when I was the Administrator at Our Lady of the Valley and Holy Cross Churches in Wayne. The people of Holy Cross adored him, especially the children whom he loved dearly. Most recently, Father was a regular celebrant at the 5:00pm Sunday evening Mass here in Newton. He preached at the last two Healing Masses where the people of God felt his genuine spirit as he shared with them his own road of being faithful while being terminally ill. It was truly a moving experience to be at these Masses and listen to Father. Of course, Father Michael was the only priest that could talk about his imminent death and make the People of God laugh all at the same time. It was a unique gift which he possessed and often shared with anyone who would listen. When I think about Father Michael, the Sacred Scripture that comes to mind is from the Book of Sirach: A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter, he who finds one finds a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth. A faithful friend is a life-saving remedy, such as he who fears God finds; for he who fears God behaves accordingly and his friend will be like himself (Sirach 6:15-17). Father Michael is one of the very few priests in my life that I could call my friend. Maybe it was because we both knew of maltreatment and injustice in our priesthoods that made our bond that much stronger. We often met for dinner (oh how Father Michael loved to eat, even until the very end). We would sit over a meal (Chinese was his favorite) and discuss all the problems of the Church and how we thought we had all the answers. Father had a keen mind for the law with a natural sense of right and wrong and for justice and injustice. He could smell a phony 100 miles away and was not afraid to personally bring it to their attention. Father Michael was outspoken, candid to a fault, sarcastic, intelligent, but always kind in his dealings with the faithful entrusted to his care. Of course, Father Michael was not afraid to hold his own when he was pushed by those who love to push priests by their words and actions. A wilting lily Father Michael was NOT! He usually gave what he received and usually in spades. Like many gifted people, Father Michael had his own idiosyncrasies and quirks, but that is what made his life stories which he shared at Mass all the more entertaining, believable and endearing. Father Michael had nicknames for everyone. Once a friend of his had a bad reaction to some medication and it turned his arm black. He was forever known as Black Arm. Because Father loved to travel and often thanked me for allowing him to fly first class to Paris, China, Viet Nam and the other hundreds of places he traveled, he often referred to me as Golden Arm. But underneath all of Father s jocularity, there was much sadness during his sickness, especially was how he felt so all alone. He often mentioned to me that I was one of only three priests that ever called him or asked about his health during his sickness. No doubt, this made our relationship even stronger. But thanks be to God, the people of God always kept him in their prayers, thoughts and kind deeds. After retiring from the Diocese a few years ago, I know that Father Michael lost a lot of his joie de vivre as he felt that he was unjustly treated. He was more than willing to continue in his position at Catholic Community Services, but the diocese had other plans for him. So the loss of CCC was the gain of Newton, affirming my belief that God (indeed) draws straight lines using crooked arrows. This change in Father Michael s ministry enabled him to be a regular part of our family of faith where the people of God at Saint Joseph Church came to know and love him so dearly. A wonderful reality during Father s sickness was how much his doctors at Columbia Presbyterian always appreciated that he never asked them how long he had to live. He thought if they told him a specific time, he would be worrying about it until that time came. On the contrary, Father Michael just kept traveling and said: If I fall and die in Paris, Viet Nam or wherever I am, then that will be it, at least I was doing what I wanted to do. This past week I brought a large poster board that had the many best wishes and prayerful remembrances of our parishioners and when I delivered it to Saint Joseph Hospital in Paterson, Father Michael said: I feel like a king! I also had many opportunities to speak with him frankly about his disease and his eventual death. I think like many of us, Father Michael was in a bit of denial. I often remarked, You are like the dentist who has children with bad teeth, because you are the lawyer without a Will or any end of life directives. He brushed this off and at the very end, he just looked at me and said ST, I don t really care. Father will be greatly missed, not only for his friendship and comradery, but for his personal, professional and priestly zest for life. I am not sure Father ever sat down and wrote out a homily. I believe it was just a stream of consciousness of one story to another about his favorite subject, in his own words myself! Somehow, he eventually tied his trips, antics and unique humor into the Scriptures of the day, while always challenging the faithful to be more loving, more accepting and more kind to one another. Just as the Scriptures remind us By His sufferings, we were healed. I believe that the sufferings and injustice in Father s own life, made him a better person, a gentler friend and kinder priest. I would like to give a few words of gratitude to Father Junior Flores, the pastor of Saint Brendan Church as he took on the responsibility of caring for Father Michael and making sure that his medical needs were being met when Father was very sick. For his courageous and fraternal care, I know that Father Michael was appreciative and forever grateful. And to his long-time friend Father Edward Lambro; many thanks for being a stalwart colleague and sounding board. I know that Father Michael treasured your friendship and fraternal care. May the Lord bless you both with His grace and peace....continued on next page

We pray that he is now resting in the peace of the heavenly kingdom where the promise which was made to him on the day of his baptism and on the day of his ordination, has now come to fruition. Father Michael truly had run the race and fought the good fight. Priest of God, Father Michael J. Burke, may you now be wearing the crown of glory in heaven and may all your good deeds have gone with you. May all the baptisms you celebrated, confessions which you heard, weddings that you witnessed, anointings that you shared with the sick and dying and Masses that you celebrated, have paved a way to the glory of the heavenly Father. May you rest in peace my dear friend. May your soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, now rest in peace. Amen.
