3 PARISH WEEKEND DONATIONS June 25, 2018 Collection $7,279 Online Giving $424 Total: $7,703 Thank you for your generosity Weekend Mass attendance: 599 No More Second Collections $2,245 Just a reminder that our weekly budget is $10,000. Thank you for all those who have generously given to the No More Second Collections collection. To date, we have collected $17,529 (which is just over three quarters of last year s total to date). This special collection eliminates almost all 2 nd collections throughout the year, which affects 100% of the parish. Please prayerfully consider being part of your parish family in this endeavor. Thank you for your generosity! 4 th of July mass Mass on Wednesday, July 4 th, Independence Day, will be at 9:00am in the church. There will be NO 12:05pm Mass that day. Summer hours The Parish Center Offices will close at noon on Fridays during July and August, beginning Friday, July 6 th through Friday, August 31 st. ******************************** The Parish Center Office will be closed Wednesday, July 4 th for the holiday. However, during the summer months, their families must provide these additional meals for them. We are looking for donations of items that will help parents provide daytime meals and snacks for their children during the summer when the children are not in school. Please consider adding these items to your regular donation: Chef Boyardee all varieties, mayonnaise, cereal, granola bars, cookies, juice boxes, snack size apple sauce, snack size puddings, packets of instant flavored oatmeal and paper towels We truly appreciate your continued support and generosity! Garlic & oil Garlic & Oil in Sparta held a fundraiser to collect toiletries for the Saint Mother Teresa Food Pantry. As you can see, it was a big success. 5 FR Body of christ A few months ago, while I was celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial here at Saint Joseph, a woman came up to me after Mass and asked me Father, why did you say just before Communion, that if you are not Catholic you may not receive Communion? To which I quickly responded, That is not what I said because I say the same exact thing each and every time at Funeral Masses which I am the celebrant.....and that is My dear friends, this is the time you sit there and ask yourselves if you should go to Communion. I cannot make that decision for you, but if you are Catholic or Orthodox and you feel you are properly prepared to receive the Lord in the Eucharist, I invite you to come forward. I then make a logistical comment about how we receive Holy Communion, either in the hand or on the tongue and then I add Now, if you are Catholic and feel you are not prepared or if you are not Catholic, I invite you to come forward for a blessing. Please cross your arms across your breastplate indicating to me that you would just like a blessing. Thank you! This issue is a very difficult and sensitive one because hanging on the sanctuary panels, on every bulletin, on our website and usually in every homily I give at funerals; are the words All Are Welcome. So how can this be? And as I have also said many times Just because you are welcome, does not mean you get everything you want. I want you to know that I am truly sensitive to this issue because no doubt, many people could easily feel rejected or left out during the reception of Holy Communion. I am sure some people even might think others who are receiving Holy Communion are saying to them You are not good enough. But that is NOT the case at all! As in all things in the Church, one has to look back into history to understand the present practice and praxis of the Church. Since the very first centuries of our Church, those who wished to be part of the Catholic Community and were preparing to be part of a particular community, right after the Liturgy of the Word, they were escorted out to learn more about the faith (catechesis,) while the rest of the community which was fully initiated would participate in receiving Communion. Again, this too can even seem non-welcoming or even exclusive. This is why when I have weddings which are mixedmarriages (that is one spouse is Catholic and one is not) I never offer to celebrate a Nuptial Mass. It seems ironic and disuniting to me that at the first meal they will share together as husband and wife, one of them (the non-catholic) is excluded. When we come forward to receive Holy Communion and the priest, deacon or Eucharistic Minister holds up the Body of Christ or the Blood of Christ, they say The Body of Christ or the Blood of Christ. This means, it is not a symbol of His Body, or that it represents His Body, but it is truly His Holy Body and Precious Blood. This is He; the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ. So when we say Amen to that, it does not mean ok or thanks. Rather, coming from the Hebrew word, your Amen means I believe. And I not only believe in this miracle, but I would stake my life on that reality. Therefore, people coming to Communion who do not believe it, does not make any sense. We do not want people coming to Communion who do not believe that. And then there are the people that say, I do not believe that it is just a symbol of Jesus, I believe that it is truly the Body and Blood Christ and I am not Catholic, why cannot I receive? The problem with this scenario is that there is no preexisting reality. They have not been received into the Body of Christ, there is no communion with the whole body of Christ. The problem is that people are still offended and maybe even hurt. To which I have to ask: Is this a bad thing? Maybe this pain is a good thing. Remember the prayer of Jesus at the Last Supper when He said: Father, may they be one even as we are one, so that the world may see them and give You glory (John 17:11b). This prayer of Jesus is that we would not be divided, however, the sad reality is that we are and the sadder part is that most of us do not even care because they see diversity as a charism and gift. But that was NOT Jesus prayer; He prayed that we would NOT be divided. Maybe the only time we really care is when we feel the pain of feeling excluded during Communion time at Mass. Again, maybe this is a good pain so that we can be motivated to strive after union and be an answer to Jesus prayer! Maybe one day we may all be gathered around one altar, with one shepherd, receiving the Holy Body and Precious Blood of Christ, where All Are Welcome and All Are One!

Pope john xxiii principal Congratulations to our parishioner Eugene Emering who has been appointed Principal of Pope John XXIII High School. Project self sufficiency Project Self Sufficiency is offering free lunches for children under 18 Monday through Friday from June 25 th through August 31 st. Lunch will be served from 11:15am to 1:15pm at Project Self Sufficiency, 127 Mill Street. Backpack ministry Every year the Columbiettes donate school supplies to each Diocese within New Jersey for children who enter the various programs and shelters, who, unlike other children heading off to school, would not be able to afford a new backpack and supplies. This program is called the Backpack Ministry. This past weekend our Don Bosco auxiliary donated 71 backpacks stuffed with school supplies out of the 748 backpacks collected at the NJ State Columbiettes Convention. Happy fourth of july Lord, guide this nation by your Spirit to go forward in justice and freedom. Give to all our people the blessings of well-being and harmony, but above all things give us faith in you, that our nation may bring glory to your name and blessings to all peoples, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
