4 Religious superficiality/hypocrisy This past Thursday s Gospel Jesus said: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of filth. Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing. (Mathew 23:27-28) My Grandmother once told me I think too much religion is not good for anyone. Now it seems a bit odd that I, as a priest, would use this quote, but through my many years of dealing with people in and out of the pew, I have come to realize that some of the nicest, kindest, most generous and loving people, sit in the pew. Unfortunately, I have also come to the realization that some of the nastiest, least generous and judgmental people, also sit in the pew and even sometimes, in the Presider s Chair. I call to mind when I was going to Catholic University and one of my classmates was living in a parish near downtown Washington, DC and it just happened to be one of the most liberal parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington. Many left wing politicians frequented the church and my classmate, a true FBI (Foreign Born Irishman) was assigned to live in the parish while going to classes. While he was there, this conservative Irishman had many letters written about him to the Cardinal of Washington. It seems that he was less than welcoming and forgiving in the confessional, not to mention he was not afraid to speak of his conservative, Republican, political leanings from the pulpit. The reason why I share this example with you is that this (former) friend struggled with what he called the Irish curse which meant he was often given to drink a little more than he should have. I often called him the fall up the stairs drunk. To say the least, he often struggled with his personal piety, purity and sobriety. However, that did not have any effect on his mercy or lack thereof found in the confessional. I remember telling him quite frankly: Father, I could see if you had your own life in order, then you might have a leg to stand on in the confessional. But what gives you the right to refuse absolution to anyone? Of course, all I heard were crickets. Which leads me to the purpose of this article in which I want to express my personal thoughts on how often times the nastiest, most judgmental and often off-putting people in my own life and yes, even in the Church call themselves Christians. These are the people that often come to Mass regularly and even for some, daily and how, although they fulfill the legal requirements of the law, they too miss the opportunities of grace in being kind, less judgmental and even welcoming in their daily lives. Maybe they are the Scribes and Pharisees of the 21 st Century that Jesus speaks of when He says: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! (Matthew 23:23-24) So as usual, I am truly intrigued why Jesus is always going after the Scribes and the Pharisees. It is possible that the psychological makeup of individuals in our time who think they are holy, unprejudiced, correct, truthful, in the know, justified or better than other people are the new Scribes and Pharisees? In each of His encounters with these groups, Jesus wants to warn us against religious superficiality, religious hypocrisy. This is a serious temptation for all people of faith is to be satisfied with our outward signs of piety and devotion without a corresponding to an inner conversion of our minds and hearts. Jesus stern words are meant to challenge of us from being self-satisfied with our outward religious piety and to be committed to daily inner conversion in the power of the Holy Spirit. For Jesus, true integrity must be found in our words and our deeds. As always, Jesus offers us a way out by living a life which overcomes religious hypocrisy The greatest among you must be the least and the servant of all (Luke 22:26). These are NOT just words of our Lord, but words that He lived out by his very deeds on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. For being a true Christian (one who follows Christ) greatness is to be found in the humility of our service and NOT in outward signs of religious piety. Here we are in 2017 and our churches are emptier (except ours which seems to be needing more space) than they were years ago, seminaries and convents are nearly depleted and still some want to blame liberalism, secularism and Vatican II. But maybe, just maybe, it might be the result of the nastiness and lack of kindness people have endured and experienced at the hands of so-called Christians and as a result, they just opted to stop coming to church. Now I can hear the naysayers already (especially those who refuse to come to our church anymore but still read my articles each week) saying that I have been nasty and not-welcoming myself. How could he ever write such an article? And while I am far from being perfect, I do know that the people who have had problems with me in the past usually centered around a few major things: Faith Formation, the honesty or style of my preaching, the forwardness of my personality or just that I am not their cup of tea. If anyone knows me for ten minutes, knows that I have a very strong personality, but this A-type personality trait is never far from my pastoral heart. I consider myself to be conservative theologically and pastoral in my approach to the faith and the faithful. Of course, there are some non-negotiables, like attending Mass on the weekend, coming to church as a family, being respectful, being honorable, being just and being generous to those in need (to list just a few). When even our Lord, who was without sin, dared to challenge the faithful Scribes and Sadducees of His time, look what they did to Him. That is the reality of life; that often times when you speak the truth, you will be persecuted. Once again, call to mind the words of Jesus: Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me. Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:10-12). Therefore, I think that we all have to take a good look in the mirror and remember once again take to heart the challenging words of Jesus: Do not judge lest you be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother s (or sister s) eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother (or sister), Let me take the speck out of your eye, and behold, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother s (or sister s) eye. (Matthew 7:1-5) Certainly, not an easy task and one that goes to the heart and soul of our being when we think we are better than others are. But, once again, let us remember the words from this weekend s Gospel of Saint Matthew: "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for my sake will find it (Matthew 16:25). I am up for the journey and the challenge, anyone else?

Thought for the day The key to regaining the buildings of every parish I ve ever led was to address the very reason they were turned over to community groups to begin with. It s all about identity. There is much talk in our Church today about crises. We are told that we have a vocations crisis, a family crisis, a marriage crisis, a financial crisis, a faith crisis, a sexual abuse crisis, a leadership crisis and a [insert your own here ] crisis. While there may be much valuable discussion around these issues, I contend that our deepest crisis is an identity crisis, and that these other crises are but symptoms of this deepest crisis of all: we have forgotten who we are and what we are called to do as a Church. When this happens, we soon forget not only what our buildings are for, but why we exist as a Church to begin with. Divine Renovation by Father James Mallon. 2 Doctors of the church Healing retreat The Sacred Heart Retreat Center, Newton Friday, September 8 th to Sunday, September 10 th Cost is $175 Lodging and all meals are included.
