2 Third Sunday of Lent Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma The Paschal Mystery and the Paschal Sacraments Paschal comes from the word for Passover, Pascha. The paschal lamb was the lamb sacrificed on Passover. Jesus is the Paschal lamb for Christians because of His being sacrificed on the cross during Passover. The Paschal mystery is our remembering the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus that set us free from sin and death. This mystery is what we believe happened during the first holy week, the first Easter. The word Easter becomes associated with this feast from the Germanic Christians because it was celebrated in the springtime when they had celebrated the feast of the goddess of spring Eastre. It may also be associated with the word for east Ostern because the sun rises in the East. The Paschal Sacraments are Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. These are the sacraments that are associated with the mystery of Easter, the Pascha. In Baptism we die and rise with Christ and are transformed spiritually by our being baptized. The power of sin and death are overcome by the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are recreated in the waters of baptism and receive the promise of eternal life, that which was lost by Adam and Eve by their disobedience. Confirmation has its roots in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and Apostles of Jesus after His Ascension while they were in the upper room. Their faith in Christ, the Risen Lord, was confirmed by the Holy Spirit and in the power of the Spirit they began to freely proclaim Jesus as the Risen Lord. The Acts of the Apostles remembers this event and how it enabled the Apostles to spread this Good News to the people of the Mediterranean basin and beyond. Eucharist is of course, the remembering of the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples. It was the supper when he took bread, gave thanks to God and broke it and declared that this was His Body. It would enable them to remember how His body was broken and destroyed for the forgiveness of sins. He took the cup of wine and blessed it and shared it with His disciples as a way to remember that he established a new covenant between God and His people through the shedding of His blood on the cross. He becomes the paschal Lamb, slain for the salvation of all humanity. We remember this event and the events of Good Friday and Easter Sunday each time we are united at Eucharist. Our Pascha, Easter, is our time of rejoicing in the great gift of our salvation from sin and death that Christ brought about by His passion, death and resurrection. These Easter Sacraments, Paschal Sacraments enable those coming into the church to be sanctified, made holy. They must then take up the mission of the Church which is to proclaim this Paschal Mystery to all people. The newly baptized, the Neophytes, are charged by Christ like the disciples were to go spread this Good News to all people and Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. At the Easter Vigil we welcomed some of the new members of our community through these Easter/ Paschal Sacraments and rejoice with them in the faith in Our Risen Lord. Then during the Easter season we will welcome our children into the Church as well.
