2 Twenty- eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Important changes coming to Mass Focus on the Word of the Lord Beginning the weekend of October 27-28, 2018 we will begin something New. I know all of you hate to be interrupted when you are viewing or reading something very important. Well in Church this is the same when we are trying to listen to the Word of God during the Liturgy of the Word. The Word of God is proclaimed each Sunday. We hear a proclamation of the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible), the writings of St. Paul and others in the New Testament (Christian Bible) and one of the Gospel accounts. God speaks to us and wants us to listen carefully and act on His Word. When someone comes into Mass late and disrupts the proclamation of the Word we lose our place and don t hear God s Word. Proper etiquette would dictate that you remain still and standing at this time. However, we have people entering late into the Church and finding seats and being distractions to the whole community. From October th, the side doors of the Church will be locked at the Penitential Rite. An usher will be stationed there so anyone who is handicapped can enter. The usher will seat them at the proper time. You will need to go to the front of the Church and enter through the doors on Jackson Street if you arrive late. Please understand that we are not keeping you from attending Mass. We are assisting all those who came on time to be able to listen to the proclamation of the Word of God without interruption. Thank you for your help in this matter. Presentation of the Gifts During the preparation of the altar when the bread and wine are brought up and handed to the priest, our offerings will also be presented, and blessed. It has always been the custom to bring each person s offering to the altar as their gift to God. In earlier times people would bring loaves of bread for Communion and for the poor, what they had grown in their fields or gardens, what they had made with their hands such as cloth, sandals or shoes and other materials they made or grew. The scripture calls for each person to give one tenth of what they produce to give to God as a way of thanking him for what they were able to make and sell for their sustenance and their families. It was always the first 10 percent that was given, not the last and least. Today we use our offerings as a way of giving a tithe to God. It needs to be blessed as it is offered to God. From now on it will be blessed and presented to God in your name and from your heartfelt gratitude for all you have received from His love and the work He has enabled you to accomplish. God is a generous giver and we need to imitate His generosity. Sending Out Since the beginning of the Church it has been a custom to bring communion to those who could not attend Sunday Mass. This included slaves who worked every day, people who had jobs they could not get out of to attend Mass and of course, the sick and suffering. We already have Eucharistic Ministers who visit the sick each week and bring Communion to them. They can receive the Lord in the Eucharist as each of us who attend Mass. Most people do not realize this is being done in the name of all the parishioners of St. Thomas. From now on these ministers will leave a pyx (small gold container for ministering to the sick) on the altar with the number of hosts they will need to bring communion to those they visit. At the end of the Mass, after the Communion prayer, they will be called up by the priest, handed their pyx and then sent to visit the sick. They will leave immediately on their journey to visit our brothers and sisters who cannot attend Mass. This is a wonderful ministry because they bring Christ to those who need his love and strength and they become a vehicle of God s word and Eucharist to those who cannot leave their homes, hospital or rehab. They are a source of our love for them and our desire to commune with them in Christ. It is important that everyone has a chance to learn about these changes. Please also spread the news if you know someone who can benefit from this information. Fr. Frank T. Dicristina

And we, though many, throughout the earth, we are one body in this one Lord. With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, many of us take this time to reflect on the many blessings God has shared with us. We would like to personally thank the 275 families who have contributed $120,971 to the DDF Annual Appeal. We are at 121% of our financial goal, but are only at 7% participation. Our goal is 10% participation of our total registered households, or 372 families. The amount you are able to give is not as important as showing your support and solidarity with our parish community. It s not too late to donate! October is Clergy Appreciation Month! Please keep our wonderful clergy members in your prayers.

What do we do with old technology? If you are like me, you have a special corner of your shed or garage packed with old computers, printers, phones in other words, old technology. We may be afraid to throw them out because they have our personal information still on them. Maybe we are aware that they can be a hazard in a landfill because of the chemicals and minerals used to make them. We have an answer to your disposal issues: Recycle them with a professional company that will wipe your important info off the hard drive and recycle the salvageable parts. After Masses (7:00, 9:00, and 11:00) on Sunday, Oct. 21, bring your items to the school. We will hold them until Monday when the truck will arrive to haul it all away.
