Parish Council meets on Mondays every two or three months at 7pm in the auditorium (dates to be announced).

After Stations of the Cross there will be Benediction Traveling Statue of the Pieta The beautiful statue of the Blessed Mother holding Jesus in death travels to your private home for one week.

2 The Season of Lent at St. Aloysius Church The Season of Lent is upon us. Lent began Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018 and ends on Holy Thursday. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are known as The Triduum. Easter Sunday is April 1, There will be some slight changes to our Lenten Season here at St. Aloysius Church, while remaining traditionally the same. The schedule will be as follows: Lenten Mondays: Confessions from 6p.m. - 7p.m. Lenten Fridays: 6:30 Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament; sign up sheets available 7p.m. Stations of the Cross, with the Blessed Sacrament exposed. After Stations of the Cross there will be Benediction Traveling Statue of the Pieta The beautiful statue of the Blessed Mother holding Jesus in death travels to your private home for one week. There are prayers to be offered each day/evening with the family present. The prayers are provided for you you may offer your own prayers. There will be a sign up sheet for you for the entire 6 weeks of Lent. Six different families are requested to sign up. Please pick up the statue (boxed) in the priest s sacristy. Please return the statue to the priest s sacristy BEFORE the Saturday evening Mass each week so that the next family may receive her. The Traveling Statue of The Pieta will be visiting the home of Mr. & Mr. Jim and Sandy Valentine for the week of Feb. 25 March 3. HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE Palm Sunday - all regularly scheduled Masses Holy Monday through Wednesday - 7am Mass Holy Thursday (no 7am Mass) 7p.m. Mass of The Lord s Supper Good Friday - 3 p.m. service of The Lord s Passion - no Mass; no Stations of the Cross. 7:00 p.m. Tenebrae Service Holy Saturday - Mass of The Easter Vigil at 8pm Easter Sunday - Mass at 9am and 10:30am. Good Friday Tenebrae Service The word Tenebrae is Latin for darkness. It is a spiritual service of readings and hymns with an emphasis on the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus. A candelabra will be lit and slowly extinguished after each reading/hymn. In our day, many people are mandated to work on Good Friday and cannot attend the 3pm service of the Lord s Passion. Tenebrae is offered at 7 p.m. for those who are unable to attend at 3 p.m. or for those who wish to attend both. If you have never attended a Tenebrae Service you may wish to consider it. All are invited. The Pastor s Patch: Last week Sunday, I spoke about the two stained glass windows in the Church on the left side as you enter the Church from the main doors. Since there was copious information I decided to write what was said. Perhaps you may wish to retain it for posterity. The first window next to the old confessional depicts our patron saint, Aloysius. He was from the House of Castiglione and was of Italian royalty. He was born in 1568 and died in 1591 at the age of 23. His name in Italian is: Luigi (English: Louis). His Latin name is Aloysius. He never used the name Aloysius, but always signed everything, Luigi. The window: St. Aloysius wears a cassock and a surplice. He was a seminarian. He didn t live long enough to be ordained a priest. He was a Jesuit. The Bible is undoubtedly open to the Passion of St. Matthew, as Aloysius had a devotion to reading the Passion. In front of the Bible is a skull, signifying that he gave up all material wealth to follow Jesus. He lovingly holds a crucifix, demonstrating the object of his love: Jesus, crucified. The lily depicts the purity or virginity of St. Aloysius. His virtues are: a deep love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, the Virgin Mary and those who are ill and/or poor. The second window: This window depicts Jesus with the children. As a matter of fact, all the windows have a theme of youth. We are all children of God, no matter what our age. The ship below Jesus and the children signifies the Church. Metaphorically, we are in the ship and the ship is on the sea which becomes turbulent and tempest tossed. It is the experience of the church that she has gone through very difficult times as well as times of peace and calm over 2000 years.

3 Second Sunday of Lent Vocations to the Priesthood The Vocation Office of the Archdiocese of Hartford invites everyone to come and pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood in our Archdiocese at four special Holy Hours, celebrated by the Vocation Director for the Archdiocese. Each Holy Hour begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by a light coffee-and reception so we have the chance to meet one another. Please join us! THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. Please register by February 28 th ; phone: We will explore the background to Matthew s Gospel and examine Matthew s genealogy, focusing in particular on the theological value of four women included in the line of Jesus. The second Sunday of Lent every year recalls the Transfiguration of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Mount Tabor has been the focus of devotion to this event. As mountains go, it is not particularly lofty, rising about fifteen hundred feet, within view of the Sea of Galilee and very close to Nazareth. Scripture doesn t identify the mountain, but in the year 348 Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said he preferred Mount Tabor to Mount Hermon as the site of the Transfiguration, and his opinion won. It has long been a strategic military site, and ancient fortresses are visible on the heights. Over the centuries, churches and fortified monasteries rose on the mountaintop, only to be destroyed by various invaders. Six hundred years ago, local Christians started to decorate the ruins with flags and banners on the Feast of the Transfiguration. In 1631, the Sultan granted permission to the Franciscans to live on Mount Tabor, and they have been there ever since, discovering the ruins of an old Crusader church and constructing the present church on the site in The top of the mountain is divided into Greek Orthodox and Latin (that s us) zones. At one time, tourists arrived on the summit by bus, but this is no longer permitted. Some ride bicycles up a challenging and winding path, while others take the four thousand three hundred steps constructed for Christian pilgrims in the fourth century. It s hard to imagine the fishermen following Jesus up this craggy mountain without complaint. Visitors will sympathize with Peter s plan to construct booths and stay put with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah for a while, enjoying the view, and planning the trip back down. Rev.
