Parents must be practicing Catholics who are registered in the parish. A Baptism preparation session is required. Please call the Parish Center to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: The Sacrament of Matrimony requires a time of spiritual preparation. Arrangements should be made at least six months before the date by contacting the priest and before any social plans are made. Sacrament of Reconciliation: Saturday Noon 12:30pm. First Friday Adoration: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins after 8:45am Mass on First Friday and ends at 10:00am. Religious Education: Children of the parish are expected to receive Religious Education in a Catholic school or CCD program. Arrangements may be made by calling the Parish Center. Hospitalized Parishioners and Shut-Ins: Please call the rectory if someone in your family is hospitalized or a shutin. If a parishioner is not able to attend Mass, the priest and/or Eucharistic Ministers can bring Communion to the home. Parish Registration: New parishioners are asked to register as are newlyweds and single young adults even if registered before with their families. A registration form can be found on the back of this bulletin. St. Vincent DePaul Society: Within our parish boundaries, there are many needy persons. This Society encourages those who can to contribute monetarily to the second collection on the first Sunday of the month to help those in need. For those wanting to volunteer help or for those in need of food or financial assistance please call Parish Prayer Line: The parish has a prayer line. 2 Page Two GIVE BETTER THAN YOU RECEIVE Jesus words in today s Gospel continue to contrast the Jewish law and practice with the practice of the followers of Jesus. Today s Gospel continues with slight variations the formulation: You have heard... and What I say to you is... The old laws of retaliation were once created to soften the severe and vengeful retaliations common among the peoples that surrounded the struggling people of God. The would-be followers of Jesus again feel surrounded by people bent on retaliation. So Matthew presents Jesus, who asks his followers not only not to retaliate at all but to turn the other cheek. He asks that his listeners give the one who asks more than he or she seeks. Jesus asks us to love and pray for those of our home country and the alien, the ones who love us and the ones who hate us. Catering is also available through Maria. SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA Page Three Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Olive oil looms large in the vocabulary of baptism. There are other oils in the pantry closet, from grapeseed to safflower to canola, but only olives yield the proper meanings. Olives don t just happen; they are cultivated, nurtured, pruned, and fussed over; they are a sign of human and divine cooperation. Olives can thrive in poor soil, but they cannot survive without human ingenuity, planting shoots and pruning branches. They can t be popped from a tree and munched like apples: they are inedible without long curing; neither do they yield their oil to hand pressure alone, but only to huge stone mills. Abundant patience is needed as sediment sinks to the bottom of storage barrels and pure oil rises to the surface. Olive oil is a byproduct of peace: war keeps harvesters, planters, and pruners within city walls and turns millers into soldiers. To obtain oil from olives you need vast measures of hope, patience, faith, and ingenuity. Olive oil is a sign of God s bounty and the way we human beings collaborate with God to bring about impossibly wonderful results. It is creation at its finest. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. 2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the laws of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. 6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to the Lord.
