Parents must be practicing Catholics who are registered in the parish. A Baptism preparation session is required. Please call the Parish Center to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: The Sacrament of Matrimony requires a time of spiritual preparation. Arrangements should be made at least six months before the date by contacting the priest and before any social plans are made. Sacrament of Reconciliation: Saturday Noon 12:30pm. First Friday Adoration: Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins after 8:45am Mass on First Friday and ends at 10:00am. Rosary: The rosary is prayed after 8:45am Mass on Mon, Wed, Fri & after 8:00am Mass on Sat. Religious Education: Children of the parish are expected to receive Religious Education in a Catholic school or CCD program. Arrangements may be made by calling the Parish Center. Hospitalized Parishioners and Shut-Ins: Please call the rectory if someone in your family is hospitalized or a shutin. If a parishioner is not able to attend Mass, the priest and/or Eucharistic Ministers can bring Communion to the home. Parish Registration: New parishioners are asked to register as are newlyweds and single young adults even if registered before with their families. A registration form can be found on the back of this bulletin. St. Vincent DePaul Society: Within our parish boundaries, there are many needy persons. This Society encourages those who can to contribute monetarily to the second collection on the first Sunday of the month to help those in need. For those wanting to volunteer help or for those in need of food or financial assistance please call Parish Prayer Line: The parish has a prayer line. 2 Page Two WONDERS The normal response to a surprise is amazement, gratitude, and delight. By definition, we don t anticipate surprises. Their occurrence reminds us that we cannot always guess or shape the future. Granted, we do what we can do; we attend to the daily tasks, as we must. For grace is surely here in the mundane, and God is in the details. But God is in the happy surprises, too. Today s readings are filled with startling developments. We hear the clarion cry of one of those rare prophets announcing the coming of the Lord. Isaiah proclaims startling, surprising images of the nearly impossible reconciliation of opposites: calf and lion, leopard and young goat, child and serpent. Isaiah s vision sees all of these creatures living in harmony. This is Eden again; this is paradise. It is God s surprise and promise. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace is the often-memorized definition of sacrament, but through four decades of reform we have rediscovered the power of sacrament to bestow grace by reshaping our lives as individuals and communities. Not so long ago, most people were not attentive to the nature of sacrament as an act of the Church, a power that flows from the Body of Christ. Fifty years ago, we were inclined to see a sacrament as an encounter between Christ and an individual. Today, we see that definition does not go far enough. God s grace is not a trickle, but a gushing torrent washing over the whole Church. Like a photographer pulling back the camera for a broader picture, today we are not only interested in the person who is being baptized, reconciled, or anointed. We think about how celebrating a sacrament transforms a community. We think about the grace given by Christ to the community that baptizes or marries or ordains or confirms. Sacraments are for the good of the community. Even when it appears to be a private, hidden moment, as in individual confession, a sacrament is always for the sake of the whole body, always more than meets the eye. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. Please spread the word to any Latino and Spanish speaking neighbors about this new opportunity. POPE FRANCIS WANTS YOUR HELP- In October 2014, the Holy Father will convene a Synod of Bishops in Rome on the theme of The Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization. To prepare for the Synod, the Holy Father has asked that the bishops of the world consult with people in their dioceses. A questionnaire has been posted on the diocesan website for you to provide your advice and counsel on issues that challenge marriage and family in our culture.. EXTRA CONFESSION TIME The Light is Still on for You THIS WEEK! This Wednesday, December 11, from 6:00-9:00PM. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available in every parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Now is the time. God is waiting to offer you forgiveness, healing and peace. The light is on and the confessional door will be open. Our Lady of Guadalupe Spanish Mass is Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 7:00PM at St. Paul Cathedral and will include a procession of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All are invited to join Bishop David A. Zubik and the Latino Catholics from throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh for the Mass and the celebration. A festive reception will follow the liturgy in the Cathedral s Social Hall.

Blessed Mother Mary, we turn to you in prayer for all the people in these United States. We again place ourselves in your care, in the gentle hands that cradled Jesus Christ. Immaculate Mary, help us to stand among the family of nations as a people of compassion, generosity, and peace. Make us a people of vision and courage, who will gift this world with new life, new hope, and the unity for which your Son died. O, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who turn with confidence to you today, Amen. GIVING TREE INFORMATION -Gifts for the Giving Tree are due the weekend of December 14/15. Please return the wrapped gift with the tag on the outside of the gift. In case of returns, please provide a receipt with your gifts. CCD CHRISTMAS PROGRAM All Parents, Family, and Parishioners are invited to join us as we celebrate the Birth of Christ on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 9:15AM in McCann Hall. Our CCD students would like to share their presentations with their Church family in celebrating the birth of our Savior. CHRISTMAS FLOWER DONATIONS A special envelope for Christmas flowers is in your December envelope packet. Your special intentions will be remembered in our Masses on Christmas Day and throughout the Christmas Season. The names will be included in the bulletin the weekend of December 22. CHRISTMAS RAFFLE Don t forget to turn in your raffle tickets. The Raffle is next Sunday, December 15 at 11:30 in McCann Hall. If you would like to sell an extra book, they are available at the Parish Center SIGN OF PEACE Due to the beginning of the cold and flu season, please refrain from shaking hands at the Sign of Peace. A gesture, smile or just a nod of the head to the people nearby is acceptable. Youth Group CHRISTMAS CAROLING AND CHRISTMAS PARTY The Youth Group will be caroling on Saturday, December 14, at Beechview Manor from 6:30-9:00PM. We will meet at the Youth House at 6:30PM and then to Beechview Manor to sing carols for the residents. Also, on December 15, at 5PM the Beechview United Presbyterian Church will host the St. Paul s Cathedral Choir under the direction of Donald Fellows in a Christmas Concert. BACC HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE The Beechview Area Concerned Citizens will hold their annual Boutique on Saturdays, December 14 and 21 from 9AM to 3PM.
