4 Rooted in Holy Ground Raise Us to New Life As of 2017, it was estimated that there are 1.28 billion Catholics worldwide. So, on this past Wednesday over a billion people were called to go on retreat. They were called to enter the Season of Lent: a span of forty days when the Church unites Mount of Temptations Monastery, Israel herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert. Catholic Apostolate Center. Each year on this Sunday we hear of Jesus being led by the Spirit into the desert. The physical desert that Jesus entered was not a desert of blowing white sand, but a rocky, hilly, mountainous wilderness: gray and black and brown and, for the most part, barren. This image of the desert does not seem to connect to our 100th anniversary theme which speaks of being Rooted and Rising to new life. Yet these 40 days call us to PRAY, to FAST, to GIVE SERVICE, precisely so the Roots of our spirit can be nourished; so life, now weak, can Rise up with strength, can grow with vigor. Each week of Lent, in front of the altar, a symbol for that week will be placed. Each image will connect to that week s Gospel. Each will speak in its own way of our deepest needs ~ what we need to grow; to be fully, wholly, the People of God; His needed Light for this world of ours. This week the Desert reveals our need to leave behind noise and distractions. It calls us to set aside our own desert place: a holy space for our heart to encounter the heart of God. I will lead you into the desert (says the LORD) and I will speak to your heart. Hosea 2:16 ~S. Mary Ann Parish Religious Education Program Confirmand: Study sessions continue every Sunday evening at 6:30 pm in the Narthex. Join us for supplemental support in a small group setting Living Stations of the Cross: ALL St. Joseph Parish children in grades 5 & 6 are welcome to be a part of this annual presentation. 5 St. Joseph s Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) An alternative to St. Joseph s Sunday PREP for pre-school (age 3) thru grade 2 March 10th~11:00am Mass CGS children celebrate the first Sunday of Lent. During Lent, we change our colors to purple for this liturgical season of preparation as we focus on the Paschal Mystery and Christ as our Good Shepherd. Working with our sheepfold and figures, the children feel the love and security of being part of the Good Shepherd s flock. Our 3-D materials of the City of Jerusalem and Last Supper help us understand how the Good Shepherd laid down his life, and continues to offer Himself to us in the Eucharist of the Mass. See the March CGS Newsletter on the St. Joseph website for more details! Curious about CGS? Contact Anne Pulsifer (cgsstjoseph@comcast.net/ ). Celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph on Tuesday, March 19th Evening Prayer will be held at 6:30 in the Church followed by yummy homemade goodies at our own St. Joseph s Table! St. Joseph s Table is an ancient Italian tradition from Sicily when the people prayed for St. Joseph s intercession to ease a sever drought in the Middle Ages. They promised to have a special feast if the rains came. Rains came, crops were bountiful and a festival was celebrated with a special St. Joseph s table laden with foods for all to share. St. Patrick will not be forgotten, He has a VIP spot at the table! Spring 2019 Campaign March 4th - April 14th The St. Joseph Church Hope for Life Committee invites you to join in prayer with others around the world - 40 Days for Life is the largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history, helping local communities end the injustice of abortion. Abortions are routinely performed at Planned Parenthood of West Chester. We are asking that you prayerfully consider standing with your fellow St. Joseph parishioners one day for a peaceful prayer vigil. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex which will show our day; if that date doesn t work for you, please feel free to participate on another day. (We recommend that you always travel and pray with at least two people.) Also, for those with limited mobility, your athome prayers for the unborn will help to sustain this ministry. If interested and you have any questions, please contact Mark Arnold at For more information on the 40 Days for Life movement, go to 40daysforlife.com Help Wanted! St. Joe s Easter Egg hunt will be held on Palm Sunday, April 14th at 12:30 - rain or shine. We need donations of candy & prizes that will fit into plastic eggs. Please place candy and prize donations in the marked container at the back of church by Sunday, April 7th. If you d like to contribute money, please contact Sue Scowden at or scowden1986@gmail.com Hope for Life would like to give Easter baskets to the elderly and homebound of our parish. We are collecting items to include in the baskets. Items such as tissues, hard candy, lotion, soap, and crackers are welcome. Please drop donations off at the Narthex by Sunday, April 7th. Thank you for supporting Life! 4/042 4/0
