2 PASTOR S COLUMN PARISH COMEDY NIGHT: This is the last week to buy your tickets. Please purchase your tickets by Sunday, January 13. We will be holding another parish comedy night on Friday, January 18, consisting of dinner and professional comedians with clean humor. These have been wonderful evenings and we hope you will consider joining us for this year s event. Invite family, friends and neighbors. Tickets are available in the parish office during the week during office hours or from Fr. Tom. CHRISTMAS UN-DECORATING: Next Sunday we will be taking down the Christmas Decorations. We can always use help taking things down and cleaning things up. We will start around 12:15PM (after the 11:00 ). All are welcome to help. REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS: The feast of the Epiphany is one that connects us to other religious traditions and the reason we celebrate Christmas for several weeks. The feast of the Epiphany or manifestation of Jesus, reminds us that the reality of Christmas was something that did not just take place on one day, but took place over time. God revealed the person of Jesus to various people in various ways. God is still revealing Jesus to all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. The feast of Epiphany reminds us that we are all part of this revelation of the person of Jesus as made manifest in our own lives and our own personal belief in Jesus. The first reading today is about the Israelites being exiled from Jerusalem after being conquered by the Babylonians. The city of Jerusalem was destroyed and the people were taken into slavery in Babylon. Now the time of their exile is over and they are returning to Jerusalem to rebuild their city and their lives. But this city will be a light to the nations not because of its wealth or power, but because of its relationship with God. This will be a people who will build their lives on truth and justice, not wealth and riches. The second reading speaks of the Gentiles, the non-jews, being welcome into the Christian community. It was no longer just a community of people who had grown up in the Jewish faith. This might be hard for us to understand. People today seem to accept people of every race and nation into their communities of faith. At this time there was a great dispute about who could belong and who could not belong. And yet we see the same reality being played out in our political world. The Gospel is the very familiar story of the Magi and Herod. The magi seem to follow the signs of nature and come to Jerusalem to find the newborn king of the Jews. It is only with the help of the Scriptures that the magi and Herod are able to find this newborn king. For the magi the newborn king is a sign of hope for the nations to be united in friendship and freedom. For Herod the newborn king is a threat to his power and wealth. The point of the story is that true freedom is found not in fear, power and wealth, but true freedom is found in a king who will unite people in truth, justice and love. FIRST FRIDAY VISITS If you or a loved one are unable to attend church for health reasons or a disability, please call the church office at to be placed on our First Friday list. By signing up, the First Friday of each month a Eucharistic Minister or our priest will come to your home and distribute Holy Communion. When the priest visits he will also administer the Anointing of the Sick.

New registrations will continue again on Friday, January 18, from 9:30-11:00am. St. Joseph Food Pantry is open to anyone that falls within the government guidelines. To register, please come prepared with: VALID PHOTO ID (driver s license or state issued ID) PROOF OF INCOME FOR ALL HOUSEHOLD RESIDENTS (Pay stub, food stamps, Compass form, SS, SSI, SSD unemployment benefits, etc.) PROOF OF ADDRESS (lease, utility bill, etc.) ~ ATTENTION ~ VOLUNTEER VOLUNTEER VOLUNTEER The Food Pantry is in need of volunteers, mostly carriers (volunteers who help carry client bags). We WELCOME ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, CON- FIRMATION STUDENTS and adults to help aide in this need! High school and Confirmation students earn Service Hours!! We ask you to please consider volunteering. The Food Pantry distribution days are always the first and third Friday of each month. Carrier volunteer hours are from 9:15-11:00am and all other volunteering is from 8:00 to 11:00am. The next upcoming distribution is Friday, January 18,. ST. JOSEPH PRAYER LINE St. Joseph Prayer Line has been operating in our parish for over 20+ years. The Prayer Line is a special chain of people that in your time of prayerful needs, branch out to each other and begin to pray immediately for those in need. The Prayer Line is looking for more people to become part of this prayerful chain. There are no meetings to attend, only a phone call when a request comes in.
