2 PASTOR S COLUMN HOLY DAY FEAST OF ALL SAINTS: Thursday is the feast of All Saints and a holy day. es will be at 8:00am and 7:00pm. PARISH ALL SOULS SERVICE: On Friday, November 2, at 7:00pm we will hold our annual All Souls Service in the church. We invite families and individuals who have lost a loved one since last All Souls Day to come and pray together for those who have died and to pray for those who continue to mourn their loss. DIOCESAN POLITICAL GUIDELINES: No voters guides or other voter education information which focuses on the platforms of political parties or of candidates running for office may be distributed or made available in parishes or other Catholic institutions, except those approved for distribution by the Diocese of Erie. Approved materials are: voters guides prepared by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, or the Diocese of Erie which have been specifically approved for distribution in the Diocese of Erie. Church parking lots are private property, and therefore it is inappropriate for public groups or individuals to leaflet or distribute materials on cars parked in church parking lots. Churches must avoid complicity in the dissemination of material endorsing or opposing political candidates or positions. Thus, churches may neither favor nor disfavor any particular group that seeks to distribute materials on its property. However, the law does not impose any obligation on a church to actively monitor and prevent the leafleting of cars parked in its lots. Catholic institutions and those representing them, when acting in an official capacity, are never permitted to endorse or even appear to endorse any partisan activities or persons. Catholic institutions and those representing them are not to: Accept political advertisements of any kind, Allow campaign signs or placards on Church property (except at polling places on election day, when the presence of candidates and their supporters is universally understood as part of the electoral process and not as an endorsement). ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Two weeks ago at all the es we anointed 153 people who were in need of the anointing of the sick. That weekend we had 530 people attend. Thanks to the liturgy committee members for helping to facilitate this sacrament and all of its details. PARISH COMEDY NIGHT: Mark Friday, January 18, 2019 on your calendar! We will be holding another parish comedy night consisting of dinner and professional comedians with clean humor. These have been wonderful evenings and hope you will consider joining us for this year s event. Invite family, friends and neighbors. Tickets will be on sale soon consider them as stocking stuffers for Christmas. SCRIPTURE CLASS INFANCY NARRATIVES: Fr. Tom Whitman will be offering a four-week Scripture Class on the Infancy Narratives (stories of the birth of Jesus). It will begin on Wednesday, November 7, at 7:00pm in the choir room. The other dates vary: Monday, November 12, Tuesday, November 20, and Monday, November 26 all at 7:00pm. Sign up sheets are on the bulletin board in the Gathering Space. CEMETERY LAWN CARE: We are in the process of taking bids for cutting grass at both St. Mary Cemetery and St. Rose Cemetery. If you are interested in bidding this job, please contact the Cemetery at PARISH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS: In December a few members of Parish Council will be completing their terms and we are looking for people who may be interested in serving in their place. If there is someone you would like to nominate, or if you wish to nominate yourself, please write their/your name on a piece of paper, place it in an envelope and drop it the collection basket or at the parish office by November 4. To be eligible to serve on council: You need to be a registered member of St. Joseph Parish for at least one year, You must be at least 18 years of age and have been confirmed, You cannot be a parent, child, or cohabitant of any other member of Council.

3 REFLECTION ON THE READINGS: The readings this week cover a variety of themes. The first reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah is a vision of what the prophet believes will take place when the people return from their current exile and are led back into their homeland by God. A similar reality is being played out in various parts of the world where refugees are fleeing from the oppression and poverty of their homelands and are traveling on foot to places that promise a brighter future for them and their children. It is one more reminder of how God is always trying to help those who are least in our world to find a better place. The challenge for us is to be open and aware of how we can assist those in need on this journey. The second reading continues from the Letter to the Hebrews and speaks about Jesus as the High Priest, even though Jesus was not a high priest in the Jewish world. The author is trying to make a parallel between what the high priest does and what Jesus has done in his life and ministry. The heart of this passage is the obedience that Jesus shows to God s call even though these events were not foreseen in the tradition of the Jewish people. The gospel is the story of the blind man named Bartimaeus. It is interesting to note that this section of Mark s gospel began with Jesus curing a blind man by touching him in a series of steps to cure his blindness. In between these two stories of a blind man being cured, Jesus has been trying to teach his disciples about the type of Messiah he will be. Jesus repeatedly speaks about suffering, death, and rising on the third day. But the disciples seem to be blind to what Jesus is trying to teach them. Bartimaeus today is an example of a disciple who really sees or understands who Jesus is and leaves everything (symbolized in casting his cloak to the side) in order to follow Jesus. Bartimaeus was found sitting by the side of the road to Jerusalem that Jesus was walking on and now he is not on the side of the road but is following Jesus on the road to Jerusalem. The gift of sight that Bartimaeus is given is the gift of faith in the person of Jesus. We pray today that Jesus will help us to see and be able then to follow him more closely along the way of life. St. Joseph s Flower Donor Program provides an opportunity to honor a loved one with altar flowers along with a memorial announcement in the bulletin.
