2 PASTOR S COLUMN SCRIPTURE CLASS: Fr. Tom will be offering another Scripture class this one will be on the Passion Narratives. We will be looking at the Gospel of Mark and his Passion over a four week period. Classes will be February 6, 11, 20, 25. February 6 & 20 are Wednesdays and February 11 & 25 are Mondays. You will need a Bible, paper, and a writing instrument. THANK YOU: Thank you to all those who made our Fourth Annual Comedy Night another success. Thanks to all those who came to enjoy dinner and the three great comedians. Thanks to the Women s Guild for serving our dinner and cleaning up after. Thanks to members of Parish Council for setting up, selling tickets, and cleaning up after. REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS: Our readings today all focus on the fact that the Scripture readings we use at are what we call God s Word. We don t read just anything at but our readings come from what has been handed down for generations as being the very Word of God which are found in the Bible (The Scriptures). The first reading from the book of the prophet Nehemiah is from a time when the people were returning to Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon. The city had not yet been rebuilt, but Nehemiah wants the people to rebuild their relationship with God. And so there was a long reading of the Law and the Covenant that God had made with the people. As the people listened to the Word of God they realized they had not always been faithful to the Covenant but God had been faithful all this time. The people are overwhelmed with sadness at this, but Nehemiah tells the people not to be sad, but to rejoice that God is still there for them and that God will be their strength in this process of recovery as he has always been. The second reading from Paul s letter to the Corinthians is about how the human body has many parts and yet they all work together in order for the one body to function properly. Paul uses this image to speak about how we are all parts of the Body of Christ, not just figuratively, but literally. Paul wants us to see that each of us is a vital part of the Christian community that makes up the Body of Christ here on earth. It is through Baptism that we are all incorporated into the Body of Christ and make that Body not only visibly present, but do our part to help it function properly. In the Eucharist we consume the Body and Blood of Christ in order that we might become what we eat. Each of us has a gift to contribute to the presence of Christ in the world each day. The gospel is the beginning of a continuous reading of Luke s gospel that we will hear over the next year. Today Luke has Jesus begin his ministry in his hometown of Nazareth reading the Word of God in the synagogue. Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah about how the Spirit of the Lord has anointed him to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind Jesus proclaims that he is the fulfillment of this passage of Scripture. Jesus is the embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the people for a Messiah. Jesus is not just reading the Word of God from the past, he is also making that Word of God really present in our world. The readings today remind us that each week we listen to the Word of God taken from the Bible (The Scriptures) and try to apply that message of God to our own lives in such a way that we make God present in our world today. BAPTISM CLASS If you are planning to have your child baptized, a baptism class is required for the parents. A baptism class is scheduled for Wednesday, January 30 at 7:00PM in the choir room. FIRST FRIDAY VISITS If you or a loved one are unable to attend church for health reasons or a disability, please call the church office at to be placed on our First Friday list. By signing up, the First Friday of each month a Eucharistic Minister or our priest will come to your home and distribute Holy Communion. When the priest visits he will also administer the Anointing of the Sick. FUNERAL Our sympathy and prayers to the family of Annette Broadbent. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Competition will be held Saturday, February 2 at St. John Paul Elementary School gym. Open registration starts at 10:00am and the contest will be from 10:30-11:30am. Local council winners will be able to immediately compete in the District level competition from 12:00-1:30pm. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. 5 SUPER BOWL CHILI FEST Sunday, 3 Noon to 1:30pm St. Joseph's Guild Hall The St. Joseph Confirmation Class will be serving some delicious TAILGATE Chili directly following the 11am on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3 as a service project to help support our Sister Parish, St. Francis Xavier, in the Yucatan. Cost for a bottomless mug of Chili is $5 per person (kids under 6 free). Quarts will also be available for sale for $4 each. If you would like to pre-order chili quarts to pick up that day, please call or text by JAN. 31. Come warm your tummy and support a great cause!! PRINCE OF PEACE CENTER Bowl-a-Thon Strike Out Poverty! Sunday, February 24 / 12:30pm Thornton Hall Bowling Lanes 1208 Hall Ave., Sharon This event will support Prince of Peace Center s AWESOME life-skills classes and its Family Supportive Services programs. Teams of up to five bowlers and individuals are invited to register for the event by 1 to guarantee a free T-shirt and a chance at various prizes. Cost is $30 per person, which will include three games of bowling, shoe rental, T-shirt, raffle ticket and food, drink and snack tickets. The bowl-a-thon also will include a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and other prizes. Area churches, many of which support Prince of Peace throughout the year, are invited to field at least one team to take part in the bowl-a-thon competition.
