Brethren, As we begin the last quarter of 2014 it feels like this year has flown by. This month we celebrate the Feast of Tishri Rededication at our stated meeting, Monday, October 20 th. We hope you all can join us at the Rededication. On September 15, 2014, Brother Andrew Miller, 32 Master Mason, was presented with the Unsung Hero Award for unrecognized and substantial contributions to Scottish Rite and has assisted many 32 Master Masons. Congratulations Brother Miller! Our Fall Class is just around the corner. We will be convening the Degrees on November 1 st, with 4 th thru the 14 th Degrees, November 8 th with the 15 th thru the 26 th Degree and ending up on November 15 th, with the 27 th thru the 32 nd Degrees. Monday, November 17th will be the Ring, Rose and Cap Ceremony after our Stated Meeting. Every Scottish Rite Mason should make an attempt to attend as many of the degree presentations as possible. We are asking Fresno Scottish Rite Master Masons to assist with the presentation of our November Class Degrees. We need help in all aspects of the degrees, stage work, makeup, actors and readers, you name it, we need it. So please assist where possible. I want to thank Brother James Green, 32, for his dedication and knowledge in bringing the Scottish Rite sound system up to the 21 st century. Veterans remember that November is Veterans month. You are requested to wear your military service uniforms to demonstrate your pride and devotion to the United States and your branch of service. Peter F. Clark, 32 KCCH, Venerable Master, Lodge of Perfection
Brethren, October is the start of the fourth quarter and the last quarter of the year. Where has this year gone? We are now back to having our Stated meetings at Fresno Scottish Rite on the third Monday of the month. I would love to see you there. The Friends of the Center Guild had their Bike Ride on the on the 27th of September with more riders than they have had for this event in the past. It keeps growing, bringing more information about the Clinic to more people. Our fall class for the degrees is coming in November, so there is still time for a brother mason to join the class. This year is coming to a fast close so we are working on planning for next year. The Fishing Derby will be June 20, The Dinner Auction will be on August 1, 2015 at the Sunnyside Country Club. There are lots of things being put on the calendar for Fresno Scottish Rite. We are also looking for people who would like to be part of all the things we do on the Clinic Board. The Friends of the Center Guild is also looking for people who would help support our Fresno Scottish Rite Children s Language Disorder Center. GIVE US A CALL WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! Jim Wilson, 32 KCCH, Master of Kadosh, Council of Kadosh NEW CHECK WRITING POLICY NOTICE FROM THE CLINIC FOUNDATION PLEASE NOTE: The Clinic Foundation has notified all the Scottish Rite Bodies that in the future when checks are made out for our Childhood Language Center they must be made payable to: California Scottish Rite Foundation. A notation in the memo section of the check (lower left corner of the check) write in Fresno Clinic. The Bank of America now considers a check made out to - California Scottish Rite Foundation - Fresno Clinic on the pay to line as a third party check and it must be rejected from the deposit. If you have any question about this new policy please call me at Louis Jelinek, 33 Secretary Page 5
Hello Brothers; Summer is over and we are now into fall, soon the temperature will cool and the trees will start to drop their leaves, hopefully we will get some much needed rain. It is not just a change of weather, but a change in the Lodges too. The Brothers who will be the leaders of our Lodges next year are planning their year in hope of strengthening our Valley. I wish them much success in their endeavors and will give them my support. At the September Stated Meeting we enjoyed a dinner created by Allen Miller, 33 rd and his gang of culinary adventurers. After dinner the 16th President of the United States, (Mr. Scott portraying President Lincoln) reminisced about his Presidency. Not bad for a guy 205 years old. After that we quickly went to work on the business of the Lodge. At the meeting I had my first experience with our new sound equipment. I was impressed with how well it worked and am looking forward to using it during the degrees. Speaking of degrees, in just a little over a month from now, we will be holding our class for our incoming Brothers. We are still looking for more candidates for our class, so if you know someone who would make a good Scottish Rite Brother give him a petition. The October meeting will be the last meeting to turn in petitions for the 2014 Class. Fraternally, Gordon Keeton, KCCH Commander of Kadosh Scholarship Fund Donations Thank you for your continuing support of our Scholarship Fund Allan Miller & C. David Jenkins
MORALS AND DOGMA Annotated Edition Reviewed by Mike Hall, 32, KCCH After being out of print for over 20 years, there is finally a new edition of Albert Pike's great work Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. The Supreme Council has produced a wonderful annotated edition. Arturo de Hoyos, 33 GC KYCH, Grand Archivist, has added thousands of footnotes. They trace sources of quotations, explain unusual words, discuss Pike's other works and his inconsistencies, and help to trace his ideas and arguments through the winding paths of this work. Morals and Dogma consists of lectures on all the degrees of the Scottish Rite, from the first to the thirty-third. It was written in the mid-19th century by Albert Pike, a former Confederate general and a great scholar. He was fluent in many ancient languages and extremely well read. This fact, and his tendency to quote other authors without attribution, as well as typical 19th century long-windedness, makes the book a difficult thing for modern readers. Many a Mason has said to me, "I tried to read Morals and Dogma but couldn't get through it." Believe it or not, I actually read the old edition through twice before the annotated edition came out. Now, reading through it again with the annotations to guide me, it is finally becoming clear. It is still not easy to read, but de Hoyos has cast a great deal of light on formerly obscure places. Pike's discussion of the name Hiram, for example, receives no less than 27 annotations. They identify sources quoted, ranging from Josephus in antiquity to anthropologist Maury writing in a textbook just published as Pike was composing this section. The notes identify such obscure words as Cushites and Krishna, as well as translating from the Hebrew and Egyptian alphabets. Indeed de Hoyos has done a magnificent job in deciphering Pike's often unusual language and word usage. (Continued on page 13) Page 7

Tom s Talks Sarah came into my office smiling a devilish smile. Today was going to be her last day of therapy. In just the three months of summer we had unlocked her potential by solving her very specific learning challenge. She had poor vigilance which means she had very good memory and intelligence but, just did not know when or how to finish things. Sarah went from testing at a fourth grade level to her actual seventh grade level. In THREE months! As a part of therapy we did word, logic and problem solving games. Her devilish smile had become a smirk as she said "I got YOU this time". I gulped, swallowing my pride and said "go for it". Here is Sarah's word problem. You have been placed in a steel box with only a table and a mirror. Your job is to escape. Now think for a couple of minutes; do not jump to the answer that follows. It will make you enjoy the answer even more if you try to solve it. Remember that is what Sarah lacked, vigilance not intelligence. Here is the answer. I hope you solved it - I did not - devilish frown. It really is quite easy. giggled Sarah. You look in the mirror, you see what you saw, you use the saw to cut the table in half, two halves make a whole, so you crawl out the hole. Sarah will be a success in life thanks to the Scottish Rite's help.

SAVE THE DATE: Our Annual Dinner Auction is changing! The new date is Saturday, August 1st, 2015 The new venue will be at Sunnyside Country Club. Please mark your calendars now. Continued from page 7 The book also contains many illustrations from a variety of sources, even going so far as to have pictures of the original Egyptian art from which Pike took some of his ideas. There is an extensive glossary prepared by another noted Masonic scholar, Rex Hutchins, 33 GC. One of the most amazing parts of the book is the Bibliography. It begins with several hundred listings of "Works Used By Albert Pike in Creating Morals and Dogma" and adds another extensive listing of "Works Used for This Annotated Edition". The extent of the research both of these authors accomplished is incredible. Taken all together these aids cast a great deal of light on formerly obscure passages, and help to trace Pike's main ideas through the book. His concept of Masonic moral and ethical values is still a very important one and has much to say to the modern Mason. Even today following the path outlined by Albert Pike so long ago is likely to help a good man become a better man, and lead any Mason to seek to be surely known as a true and upright Mason. Memorials As one by one, the autumn leaves fade in the forest deep, So one by one, in each of you must come the touch of sleep; As one by one, the roses burst into the morning light, So one by one, your souls shall wake again beyond the night.
