2 PASTOR S COLUMN COMMUNAL ANOINTING OF THE SICK: At all the Masses on the weekend of April 23 & 24, we will celebrate the communal anointing of the sick. We ask all those who wish to be anointed to fill out a name tag that we will provide and to sit at the end of the pews. Who is eligible to receive the sacrament? A person who becomes ill and the illness becomes more serious; A person may be anointed before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery; Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present; Sick children are to be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by this sacrament. In a case of doubt whether a child has reached the use of reason, the sacrament is to be conferred; Some types of mental illness are now classified as serious. Those who are judged to have a serious mental illness and who would be strengthened by the sacrament may be anointed (depression, paranoia, etc.); In case of doubt as to whether the illness is serious or not, the person should be anointed. HANDICAPPED PARKING: I have received a few complaints from people who are handicapped that they can t find a place to park because people without a handicapped sticker are parking in the handicapped spots. PLEASE be sure to leave the handicapped parking spots for those who need them. FIRST FRIDAY COMMUNION CALLS: On the first Friday of every month we take communion to those who are shut-in to their homes and not able to come to Sunday Mass because of illness. There are three or four Eucharistic Ministers who assist me in this endeavor. If you know of someone who cannot make it to Sunday Mass and would like to be on the First Friday list please call the parish office. We also need more Eucharistic Ministers to help with this ministry. I give the anointing of the sick to all the people I visit as well as communion. Some people may be on this list for a couple of months, until they are better; others maybe on the First Friday List for much longer. REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS: The gospel reading today focuses on the notion of the Good Shepherd and the great care that God extends to us in the time of our need. It is important to note that Jesus is not only the Lamb of God who was sacrificed for our sins, but he is also the Good Shepherd who leads us and cares for us on our journey to God. One of the underlying themes of the Good Shepherd is that there is unity in diversity. There are all different kinds of sheep for which the shepherd cares. Despite the diversity in the kinds of sheep there is a need for only one flock. In the first reading Paul and Barnabas begin to proclaim the gospel to the Gentiles which begins to make this unity in diversity a reality in the early church with both Jews and Gentiles being welcomed into the flock. And the book of Revelation speaks about the multitudes in the heavens praising God who are from every nation, race, people and tongue. The lamb whose blood was shed is the means by which we are all united under the one Good Shepherd. SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS Some men fulfill God s call to holiness by serving as priests or permanent deacons. Men, high school age or older, who feel God may be calling them to pursue the Sacrament of Holy Orders should contact our parish priest. HOSPITAL STAY If you or a loved one are hospitalized at either Sharon Regional Health System (SRHS) or Farrell- UPMC, please call the church office at to notify us of your family name and room number so we will be able to visit and distribute Holy Communion to you or your loved one. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Mother s Day is fast approaching. Next weekend you will find in the bulletin the annual Mother s Day Spiritual Bouquet Card Set. Please submit the outer envelope in the offertory basket the following weekend at Mass or return it to the church office by Monday, May 2.

We will gather to discuss the July Cursillo to be held at Kennedy Catholic on July If you have any questions or need more information, please call Mary Beth Jones at GOOD SHEPHERD COLLECTION This weekend all parishes and missions in the Diocese of Erie are taking a special collection to support the needs of our retired Diocesan priests. This special collection on Good Shepherd Sunday will assist those dedicated priests who are elderly, seriously ill or incapacitated and in need of supplementary assistance for expenses such as non-insured medical costs, nursing home and long-term care assistance. As the number of retired priests increases in the upcoming years the Priest Retirement Plan will need to be adequately funded to meet their future needs. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of priests who have served faithfully and serve now as a "thank you" for their many years of faithful service. Help provide them the same love and generosity they provided for us for generations. Our diocesan website goodshepherd.htm contains lists with the residence of our retired priests. May we suggest sending a priest who has touched your life a note or card sometime this year letting him know you still remember him? Consider adopting one of our priests as a prayer partner and pray for them and send an occasional note. PARISH COUNCIL The next Parish Council meeting is Monday, April 18 at 6:30 PM in the choir room. FEATURED FOOD PANTRY ITEM Crackers Next week s featured item - crackers. To register for St. Joseph baptism class, please call the church office at ROSARY Please join us every Saturday at 4:45 p.m. prior to the 5:15 Mass in the Mother s Chapel to pray the Rosary. The Rosary helps us to recall the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Savior. Loving God, author of creation, your spirit pervades and enriches our world. Through your Son, who shares our humanity, you have called us to participate in your divine creativity and to build the kingdom of God here on earth. From us, we pray, as one community under the leadership of our bishop to serve all the people of this region in your name. Inspire us to discover new ways and structures to spread your Gospel. Open our eyes to see Christ in others, especially the poor, the sick and the marginalized. Empower us to be the hands and feet of Christ in our parishes and communities. Help us to welcome all into His embrace. Guide us in our discernment, as we pray with Pope Francis for the vision to see new paths of possibility; for a spirit of mission that invigorates our every effort; and for the strength to be unafraid of what is new. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen Imprimatur, July 25, 2014 The Most Reverend Lawrence T. Persico JCL Bishop of Erie
