1 Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church 2385 Commerce Blvd. Mound, MN (952) ourladyofthelake.com Fr. Tony O Neill, Pastor February 10 th, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Here I am, I said, send me! -- Isaiah 6:8 Our next consideration is avarice, which is more commonly recognized as greed. Greed is the excessive love or desire for money or for any possession that money can buy. Lest we discount it too quickly, it is not just about the quantity of money or possessions, but about our attitude of the heart towards these things. The avaricious person cares too much about the possessions they have or desire. This attachment gives rise to the willingness to deceive, lie, steal, injure, or betray for the sake of either acquiring or protecting our finances. Ultimately, greed is seeking the comfort of independence and self-sufficiency. We seek to rely on our own money and possessions in order to find happiness in this life, but in truth it is a failure to trust God to provide for what we most need in life. Avarice is contrary to the virtues of generosity and justice. Generosity is the ability to give things away with ease and delight when and where it is appropriate. It is not necessarily about the quantity we give; it is the way in which we give. In order to give with joy and freedom, it requires a detachment from that which we possess; in contrast, when we are under the influence of avarice, we tend to cling tightly to that which is ours. There are two attitudes that make it hard to be generous. The first is when we feel we have earned what we have. Having put the work into attaining what we have makes our feeling of possession that much stronger than something that has simply been given to us. The second feeling is having experienced that pain of want. Those who have experienced not having much, like those who survived the Great Depression, often hold onto all they can in order to avoid that painful experience again. The tenacious grip on our possessions can lead us to act against justice. Justice is giving someone what they are due; greed keeps us from doing that. It leads to an indifference or callousness towards those in need. We start to see the needs of others as burdensome, and begin to justify why we should be exempt from providing basic necessities. In this way, greed shifts from not only being contrary to justice, but also contrary to love. There are several ways to build our defense against avarice. First, it is helpful to find out how present it is in our heart. We could document all of our expenses for a month, and then highlight those expenses that we could have gone without. Or we could resolve to not increase our spending for a year, even if our financial situation improves; that could simply be an opportunity to grow in generosity! Secondly, we can fast as a way to break the societal hold on our desires. For a pre-determined length of time, we could avoid malls, advertisements, catalogs, and thinking about what we want to purchase next. We would be surprised to find how pernicious the advertising industry can be in forming and creating desires within our hearts. Finally, tithing is an important habit to develop, in part because it reminds us that ultimately all things belong to God. Tithing helps to re-form our hearts with trust and generosity, which leads to a greater freedom from our possessions and increases our capacity to love. Fr. 3 Liturgy Seeking God, Encountering God Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 5:1-11 All is a gift and overflowing at that. Remember the wedding feast at Cana a couple weeks ago? Jesus changed gallons and gallons of water into the finest wine. Today, just when the disciples had worked hard all night and had caught nothing, they followed Jesus direction and put out into the deep. They caught so many fish that their nets were tearing. Boats were in danger of sinking. Sometimes when we are stressed out about a project, working ourselves into a frenzy, we may finally give up and realize that it s not about us anyway. Would it not be easier on our bodies and souls to trust in the Lord Jesus by doing our best and all the while believing that Jesus will provide for all we need and more? The disciples and friends of Jesus experience his extravagance. Have a blessed week! -- Sr. Carrie We pray for those in need. Please keep the following individuals in your prayers: Chris A., Russell Barger, Bob Blake, Dan Entinger, Dolores Kelly, Jennifer Lacy, Andra Olson, Mike Paxton, Maddie Poranski, Marcia Prins, Bobby Reil, Adam Richardt, Andra Olson, Mike Schulz We pray for those in the Military: Travis B., Nicholas J., Freddie M., Nicholas R., Joshua T., Darrell V. We will be discussing how Jesus taught his disciples (and us) through Parables. Children s Liturgy of the Word meets most Sundays at the 10:30 Mass. All children, ages Preschool - Grade 4, are invited to join us as we explore the Scripture readings and discuss how to live out the Gospel message in their everyday lives. No registration is required. Our first Momnipotent meets Monday, February 11 th, at 9:15am in the Presentation Room and Gym since the weather prevented us from meeting last week. In our first session, we will explore the concept of Momnipotent. As we use our God-given talents to uniquely serve our families, we will discuss how we need each other for support and encouragement to navigate the daily joys and challenges of motherhood. Faith Formation Classes for Grades 1-5 meet this Wednesday, Feb. 13 th, from 6:30-7:45pm. To keep our children safe, all 1 st - 3 rd grade students must be escorted to their classroom and picked up by a parent at the end of class.
