Deep within a forest a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground. The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. If you took a general overview of the gospels, looking at the life of Jesus Christ and all that his life entailed, what would you find? What you would say his mission is? He preached.

4 Let us pray for our beloved deceased, most especially for Kathy Utech, who passed away on Thursday, February 7th and whose Funeral is this Monday, February 11th at 10:30 am. May Kathy and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. If you took a general overview of the gospels, looking at the life of Jesus Christ and all that his life entailed, what would you find? What you would say his mission is? He preached. He performed miracles. He was a radical counterculturalist. He tried to change people s way of life. He restored people to their communities. He was a good and holy prophet. He was a man of prayer, deeply connected with the Father. He is Jesus, the Son of God. All true things. All good things to recognize. There is so much to unpack in the person of Jesus Christ so much to discover, so much to fall in love with. But all these things don t get to the heart of what Jesus was, and still is, all about. They are merely pieces of a much larger and greater mission. Why did Jesus Christ come here? This is a question I think we should all ask ourselves. Why? Why did the Christ come to us? What was the reason? What is it all about? We could argue that Christ came to make bad people into good people. Except that s not true, at least not in its fullness. Christ certainly willed for people to grow and change and become better. But no, Jesus Christ did not come to make bad people good. Jesus Christ came to make dead people live. And that, right there, is the mission of Jesus Christ. He came to make the dead live. Everything that occurred throughout his life, and so into his resurrection, was about bringing people to life breathing into a world that had forgotten how to truly live. Why did Jesus preach? To bring the Word of God to life. Why did Jesus perform miracles? To restore people to life. Why was Jesus a radical counter-culturalist? To remind people that to truly live, to be alive, means to set our eyes, not on the things of this world, but on the things of Heaven. Why did Jesus restore people to their communities? To give new life to anyone and everyone that was viewed as already dead. Everything Jesus did was about breathing life into places where death had taken hold. That was his mission. That is his mission. To bring us to life. So. Let s start living. Not as we think we should, but as Christ thinks we should. Not as we want to, but as we are called to. To live, to be free, means to give our lives over to the Author of Life. And so, to be born into newness, to be born into greatness, to be born into true discipleship.
