Tony O Neill, Pastor 2385 Commerce Blvd. Mound, MN ourladyofthelake.com MONTHLY MAIL-OUT BULLETIN VOLUME CXVIII April 22, th Sunday of Easter I am the good shepherd and I lay down my life for the sheep and they will heed my voice. - John 10:14-16 Dear Brothers and Sisters, In this Sunday s gospel, we see one of the great images of not just the gospels but of the whole Scriptures; the image of the Shepherd. In the Old Testament, God himself is represented as the shepherd of his people. Psalm 23 begins with "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." The prophet Isaiah in speaking of the coming messiah says: "Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care." (Isaiah 40:11). This ideal image of the shepherd finds its complete realization in Christ. In the gospels, Jesus declares I am the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. In many countries, sheep are raised for their meat, but in Israel at the time of Jesus, they would have been mainly raised for their wool and for milk. Therefore, they would have stayed for many years with the shepherd who would have known well each of the sheep in his flock. The image of Christ, as the good Shepherd, is one of the most ancient images of the Christian faith. It is a common image to see Christ, the good shepherd, carrying a lamb on his shoulders. In our life of faith, it is a great gift to know that Jesus wants to be our Shepherd - to lead us and guide us where he wants us to go. The challenge for us is to let him lead and for us to follow. May God give us the grace we need to see Him, to hear Him, and to follow Him. This past Thursday at the Basilica, our young people received the sacrament of Confirmation. A special thank you to all of the parents who have diligently led your children to these important milestones. A special thank you also goes to Michelle Boris for her hard work in preparing our young people for Confirmation. God bless, Fr. 3 Liturgy Seeking God, Encountering God Lent - Triduum - Easter - Pentecost Good Shepherd Sunday Fourth Sunday of Easter The Gospel Acclamation announces: I am the Good Shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep and mine know me. One of our favorite statues depicts Jesus with the lost sheep draped over His shoulders. One of our favorite Psalms is Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. All this seems idyllic and comforting, until we begin to understand how much work shepherding involves. One has to be tough and able to swing your staff to beat off poachers and wolves. We re not Palestinian shepherds, but this week stay close to our Good Shepherd knowing He lays down His life for you. Totus Tuus Summer Faith Formation for Youth Youth can sign up now! Totus Tuus is a fun and energetic parish-based summer catechetical program. Twenty-four parishes are now taking reservations, with programs available for youth grades 1-6 and Visit archspm.org/totustuus for the list of dates and parishes. Contact a parish to register. Our early registration date provides you with the best tuition pricing and enables us to plan this summer. All parishioners are encouraged to check out the various volunteer opportunities on the backside of the registration form. Elementary Faith Formation We offer our traditional classroom model that meets on Wednesday evenings throughout the school year from 6:30-7:45pm for Grades 1-5. We also offer Family Faith Formation, our home-based program, that meets monthly on Sunday mornings at 9:30am for Grades 1-8. The curriculum used is Loyola Press Finding God program. Middle School Faith Formation The 6 th - 8 th Grade students use the Edge program and meet during the regular Faith Formation Classes. Each night includes games, a talk, small group discussion, and prayer. First Reconciliation and First Communion Preparation for these sacraments will begin in October for all 2 nd Graders enrolled in OLL School or Faith Formation. Reconciliation is celebrated in the Fall and First Communion in the Spring. Confirmation Confirmation is a two-year program open to high school freshmen or older. Preparation includes classes twice a month, one retreat per year, and events with their sponsors for second year students. Congratulations to the twenty-seven high school sophomores who were confirmed by Bishop Cozzens last Thursday at the Basilica of St. Mary! We are very proud of you and wish you the best as you continue to grow in your faith. 7 School News Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School - Building the Spirit April 2018 Twins Game - Take Me Out to the Ballgame! Our third annual OLL group Twin s game is scheduled for Monday, May 21 st, 2018, when the Minnesota Twins take on the Detroit Tigers. Like last year, our middle school students will appear on the Jumbo Tron singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame with TC during the 7 th inning stretch! Generation Day Generation Day is Friday, April 27 th. Students are able to invite a family member or friend to spend part of the day visiting the school, enjoying lunch together, and attending Mass. Thanks to the generous donations from last year s Gala Fund-A-Need, 4 new interactive panels were installed in the classrooms over spring break. Blinds were also purchased and installed in all of the rooms last summer. April Service Project During the month of April, our service project was to make place cards for the Gala. 9 Volunteer Opportunities By our baptism, we are called to share our faith with others. Many volunteers are needed for a quality Faith Formation program and we need you! Please prayerfully consider how you can help this year in one of the various ministries listed below. Thank you for your continued support of Faith Formation. Weekly Commitments Catechist (Grades 1 5) Preferred grade level: Catechists work in teams with an assistant in a classroom to share the Catholic faith with the students. All training and materials are provided. Catechist Assistant (Grades 1 5) Preferred grade level: Assists catechist in carrying out classroom activities, such as art projects, prayers, and discipline. Also takes attendance, passes out materials, and any other tasks necessary for the class to run smoothly. Middle School Core Team (Grades 6-8) Serve as a Christian role model and minister to middle school youth through building relationships. Duties may include leading games, small groups, talks, music (if applicable). Must participate in all trainings, meetings, and leader retreat. Application required; will details if interested. Open to all post-confirmation high school students as well. Confirmation Table Leader (Grades 9 10) Serve as a Christian role model and form relationships with teens as you journey with candidates toward Confirmation, particularly through leading a small group on a regular basis. High School/Young Adult Confirmation Leader (Grades 9-10) Serve as a Christian role model as you journey with candidates toward Confirmation, particularly through co-leading a small group on a regular basis. Youth Ministry Assistant (Grades 6-10) Serve as the youth minister s assistant in admin/logistics i.e. help leaders get materials, troubleshoot technology issues (training provided) make copies, monitor facilities, address behavior issues, etc. One (or more) Time Commitments Catechist Substitute Preferred grade level: Teaches the lesson during catechist absence. All materials will be provided for instruction. Hall Monitor Help maintain a quiet, orderly and safe environment before, during and after classes. (3 4 times) Children s Liturgy of the Word Leaders Read and discuss the Sunday Scripture readings during the 10:30am Mass with children for a short 15-minute lesson, 1 or 2 times each month.
