1 Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church 2385 Commerce Blvd. Mound, MN ourladyofthelake.com Fr. Tony O Neill, Pastor January 27 th, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared -- Nehemiah 8:10 Our next vice for reflection is vainglory, which is rampant in our culture. Vainglory is defined as the excessive and disordered desire for recognition and approval from others. It preys on two deep desires of our hearts: first, the desire to be thought of well by others; and the second, to think well of ourselves. One danger is that it often leads to accepting superficial and false approval. We become more concerned about our reputation and how we appear, rather than who we truly are within our core. We see this especially in our society as social media, such as Instagram and Facebook, are mostly concerned with presenting only certain aspects of our lives, and is often presented with filters to make things appear much better than they actually are. Oftentimes, the root of vainglory is the desire to have control over our happiness, either from a fear of not having interior worth or from a fear of the cost of being selfless. Envy and vainglory often feed each other; we see what others have, and desire to be perceived as being the same or better, so we control how we present ourselves. This desire of recognition and approval leads to other vices as well. Exaggeration is when we change or alter facts in order to impress those listening. Gossip is when we share something bad or false at the expense of others in order to be perceived as entertaining or knowledgeable. Lying is related, because we say false things in order to gain approval or avoid disapproval. Perfectionism is being overly concerned about our performance or appearance because our self-worth depends on it. Hypocrisy falls under vainglory as well, when our actions are different from our beliefs, because it is a way to gain acceptance of others. Boastfulness is when we share about ourselves for the sake of gaining approval. Although it is prevalent in our world, there are many ways to fight against vainglory. Spending time in silence helps us to quiet the voices of the world and ourselves, so we can better hear the voice of God speak His acceptance to us (Is. 43:1; Ps 139). Having periods of time in solitude helps remove us from an audience for whom we are tempted to perform. Time in prayer helps relieve us from the pressure of trying to build up our reputation, and allows us to be honest before the Lord. Since social media can lead us into vainglory, it can be helpful to fast from it on occasion. Finally, we can pray for an increase in the virtues of sincerity, truthfulness, humility, and gratitude. In these ways, we can begin to care less about how we are perceived, and instead pursue true excellence of our character. -- Fr. Peter The Church Library is now open whenever the Church is open. We have a wonderful assortment of reading materials in our Library which we recently reorganized for your enjoyment. We hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to browse through the books and perhaps check some out to read at home. Eucharistic Adoration We all have needs, hurts, joys, and sorrows that we can share only with our Lord and Savior. By coming to Adoration, we give Jesus great honor and act with humility by acknowledging our need for, and dependence on Him, our Creator. Spending time in Adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament deepens our personal relationship with Him and helps us to grow in faith, hope, and love. For more information, please call Jane at Mission Statement To proclaim Christ by celebrating the Eucharist, the Sacraments, and other liturgies and rites of the Catholic Church; To educate and enrich children and adults in living out our Catholic faith through worship, Faith Formation, a Catholic School, and by our example; To welcome, assist and reach out to the stranger, the forgotten, and those in need in our local community; and support social justice efforts here and elsewhere; and To use our talents and resources, given by God, justly and wisely.

3 Liturgy Seeking God, Encountering God Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 The writer of the Gospel of Luke, a second-generation Christian, recognizes that he relies on eye witnesses for his account of Jesus, however, he assures Theophilus of the certainty of the teachings he has received. The Theophilus addressed in the preface of Luke s Gospel is symbolic for all of us. We are Theophilus, a name meaning someone who loves God. The Gospel is written for us to aid and strengthen us in our faith. God s promises have been fulfilled in Jesus who has ministered to the poor and raised up the lowly. Jesus mission statement is clear. As for us, followers of Jesus, our mission statement is clear as well. Have a blessed week! Sr. Carrie We pray for those in need. This next section explores how that is done, i.e. through the sacrifice of love on the cross. Paul contradicts the teaching of the time that all had to be wise in human terms. Paul professes the love of God and the folly of the cross. Please join us on Monday at 6:30pm or Tuesday at 1:30pm. Please read 1 Corinthians 1:10 to 3:4. 5 D i s c i p l e s h i p F a i t h I n A c t i o n Stewardship Thought Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared -- Nehemiah 8:10 Ezra s instructions to the people show us that God does not forbid us from enjoying the good things in life. He wants us to be happy! However, God expects us to be grateful for all that He has given us and to generously share our blessings with those who are in need without expecting anything in return. 5 Actuals Requirements January 19 th & 20 th, 2019 $ 23,266 $ 21,225 Fiscal YTD (07/01/18 to present) $517,607 $524,175 THANK YOU, Bobbi Henrich, for the many years you served on the Maintenance Committee! Your knowledge and expertise were a tremendous asset to the Committee. We appreciate your dedication to Our Lady of the Lake Church! With the 2018 tax law changes and higher itemized deduction amount, are you looking to donate to our Church and/or School on a pre-tax basis? Consider gifting from your IRA account. There are two ways: 1. Donate directly from your IRA via a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): The rule was made permanent and you can do a QCD contribution every year. To qualify to make this type of donation, you must be over age 70½. You can donate up to $100,000 per year. The QCD order can be used to reduce your annual required minimum distribution amount. This gives more flexibility in managing your tax bill. For those in the higher tax brackets, the lower income (AGI) resulting from a QCD strategy may lessen the effect of phaseouts and limitations on taxes and other benefits, including lower taxable Social Security benefits, a larger deduction for medical expenses, lower net investment income tax, and lower Medicare Part B and prescription drug coverage premiums. The QCD strategy could lower your tax bill by reducing taxable income while allowing you to give the same amount to the church/school. The contribution must go directly from your custodian to the church/school. 2. At least once a year, it is important to review your IRA/401k beneficiary designations to ensure they are current with your wishes. Include our church/school as a partial primary and/or contingent beneficiary of your account. The amount goes to the church or school on a pre-tax basis. The IRA/401k are great ways to gift to the church or school as your other heirs would be required to pay income taxes on any withdrawals made from the IRA/401k they would inherit. This makes an IRA/401K a better asset to gift to fulfill your charity wishes. Note: We recommend you work with your CPA and/or financial planner to help you confirm the strategy fits into your overall plan and makes sense for you. Please contact Rhonda Eurich, Administrator, at with any questions. Thank you. Remembering OLL We invite you to remember Our Lady of the Lake in your will or to remember a loved one through a memorial gift. All bequests and gifts are not subject to taxation and retain their full value. Our legal title is: The Church of Our Lady of the Lake Mound, MN If you would like to see the Ask Fr.
