L AETARE SUNDAY: T HE FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT M ARCH 31, 2019

2 W E L C O M E TO THE P A R I S H OF S T. BE R N A R D! Dear Friends, We are now closer to Easter than we are to Ash Wednesday! As our Lenten journey continues to move us through the desert to the cross and empty tomb, it s important that we remain attentive to way in which the Lord is moving us to more fully embrace the relationship He wishes to have with us. Once we discover the beauty of being close to the Lord - it s a feeling like none other, friends. Lent is a perfect time to experience the beauty of the Lord s closeness, and once we draw near, we never want to leave. In his Sunday homily, Pope Francis spoke of God s mercy and the temptation for spiritual laziness. The chance for conversion is not limitless. We can rely heavily on God s mercy, but without abusing it. We must not justify spiritual laziness, but increase our commitment to respond promptly to the mercy with sincerity of heart. When we re caught with our hand in the cookie jar, our actions are oftentimes brought into the public forum. If we look at the political field these days, it has been rift with a lot of issues that have been front and center. Our relationship with God is a bit different, friends, in that it can be more internal. We know our sinful tendencies, and we know the things which lead us away from God. If it s between us and God, we can be far less motivated to change our ways. If it doesn t affect our public image and our relationships with others, then what s the big deal, right? An attitude like this can be a great danger to the spiritual life, friends, and it causes us to be flippant with the beautiful grace God wishes us to have in order to draw more closely to Him. Our lack of relationship with the Lord has far greater consequences than our exterior appearances to the world. It affects our salvation. There are many descriptions of eternal life in the absence of God, but I always find the gospel of the rich man and Lazarus a true representation of what hell can be like. The soul knows the delights and the joy of being with God, but it cannot cross that chasm which separates the blessed from the cursed. Can we even imagine how painful it must be to know the joy of heaven, but yet, also know that it will never be ours? That s why this life and how we live it out is so very important, friends. Pope Francis reference to sincerity of heart means that we take a long, hard look at the things which are keeping us from God and take them seriously. We don t just shrug it off and say, This is how God made me - He ll have to live with it. The Lord is constantly inviting us to conversion of heart, and it s something we must strive to do each day as we engage the spiritual life. God knows the true person we are, friends, and even though we may be able to mask our sinfulness and keep it hidden from the world, God sees all and God knows all. Lent is an invitation for us to grow in sincerity of heart and to live as God invites us to live. It s time for us to move toward that narrow gate the Lord references in regard to those on the way to salvation. It s far easier to go along with everyone else, but the Lord calls us to something far greater, friends. That s the jewel - the eternal prize - we must always have in our hearts. Lent gives us that opportunity to rediscover the beauty of God s love, and as the color of rose returns this weekend to signal the coming of the Lord s resurrection, it s time to throw our Lenten journey into overdrive and hasten to that place where the Lord wants us to be. A number of you have expressed concern about the lower numbers for offertory in the bulletin. They seem to be much lower than usual. I wanted to address this concern, because there s a logical explanation. When we introduced the new electronic giving system, we had a very good response. We have approximately 60 families using the new system now, which means that we have 60 families who are no longer using the offertory envelopes and dropping one in the basket. This transition has led to lower amounts on the weekends, and thus, the lower numbers in the bulletin. We publish the electronic giving amount once per month after we complete the accounting procedures for month-end to ensure the numbers balance with our bank statement. Last month, we received $7,160 in electronic giving, and that s an approximate amount we ll expect to receive going forward, give or take a little fluctuation with quarterly contributors, special gifts, new givers, etc. That amounts to about $1,800 per week. When you look at the weekend offertory, add another $1,800 to that number, and it will more accurately reflect our offertory numbers. The operating account is beginning to stabilize a bit after a very rough winter. Thankfully, we had built up a little extra in the operating account over the past few years which was able to carry us through a winter with high snow removal and heating costs. When we re in a budget surplus, friends, that s not code for Father has enough money so I don t have to give now. If we have a little extra, it s put to good use in times where our costs far exceed budget projections. Thanks for your continued commitment to your gift of treasure - we couldn t accomplish everything on our campus without your generous support. I wanted to provide you all with an update on Lori - it s been awhile since I ve written of her health. She had a bit of a setback over the past few weeks. She ended up with a respiratory infection, and it quickly escalated due to her compromised immune system from the chemotherapy treatments. It required hospitalization for 10 days so the doctors could give her IV antibiotics and monitor her oxygen levels. She s crossed the hurdle and is feeling much better. She underwent another positron emission topography (PET) scan about a week ago, and to our delight, there were very positive results. There are no areas in her body that have new cancer activity, and the area originally affected (the spine) is beginning to show a significant response to the chemotherapy treatments. If all goes well, Lori will finish with her treatments in late May or early June, and she could be back with us part time by the middle to end of June. Thanks for all of your prayers and support for Lori - she is so grateful for all of your good wishes. I ll keep you posted as her treatment progresses. I m bolding this paragraph because we re in great need of additional support for our Lenten service project. We typically provide about 150 bags to those in need at Luke House. As of this writing, we have about 70. Please see the blurb in this weekend s bulletin and consider either purchasing a bag for donation, or making a contribution of $25 to help those who are in need. We need to have all of the bags assembled and ready by Palm Sunday. Completed bags can be dropped off at the parish office. Thanks so much for your commitment to those in need. Blessed Lent, Fr. Michael
